Although influence of reference population on assessment of individual position is well recognized on the ground of sociology, its impact is rarely taken into account in economic analysis of inequality. Few analyses that are concerned with issue of reference groups in the context of inequality and relative deprivation measurement deal, however, with single reference group. The aim of the paper is consideration on how concept of reference populations of different kind (reference groups and reference categories) may be applied to assessment of aggregated complaint that results from inequality in income (wealth) distribution.

This article employs the relative deprivation theory in order to explain the formation of violent conflicts induced by an increase in economic inequality. By using the frustration-aggression hypothesis, the author attempts to illustrate how the rise in inequality, caused by changed economic structure, can be transformed into violence, often accompanied by material and human casualties. In addition to the theoretical framework, the article relies on empirical studies carried out by using relative deprivation as a starting point. Finally, the author observes indications that inequality-induced conflicts could soon take place in developed and developing countries, which is why new models of development and economic policies must be implemented and thus used as conflict-preventing mechanisms.

On 1 July 1997, the United Kingdom officially handed over the territory of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China. This event had a symbolic meaning. It marked the end of a stage in China’s history which began in the middle of the 19th century and was described as a time of humiliation. Hong Kong was supposed to be an example of practical implementation of Deng Xiaoping’s political concept of “one country, two systems”, which assumed the possibility of functioning of different economic and political systems in one country. Despite the passage of time, questions remain as to what China’s attitude to the regained territory will be; to what extent the provisions of the 1984 agreement signed between the governments of the People’s Republic of China and the United Kingdom and the 1990 Basic Law for the region will be respected by China, and thus what the political, economic and social situation in Hong Kong will look like until its complete reintegration, i.e., by 2047, and what the future of Hong Kong will be.

The aim of the article is to define the meaning of subjective deprivation within the political communication of Law and Justice. The analysis is a case study and concerns the Polish Deal reform program. The article is based on a qualitative approach in research on populism (the subject of the analysis are the statements of PiS leaders). The research problem concerns the question: is there any content that qualifies for the space defined by the category of subjective deprivation in the arguments for the Polish Order? The study shows that the arguments for the Polish Order referred to subjective deprivation in terms of both the improvement of the standard of living in the economic dimension as well as the position in society. PiS leaders announced actions to eliminate the differences between the standard of living in large cities and suburbs, and between Polish and Western society. The category that constituted an important element of the argument was the middle class, the extension and support of which was announced

Celem artykułu jest określenie znaczenia subiektywnej deprywacji w ramach politycznej komunikacji Prawa i Sprawiedliwości. Analiza stanowi studium przypadku i dotyczy programu reform Polski Ład.

The aim of this paper is to present a retrospective of child poverty research in Estonia: how it has developed from the social and political acknowledgement of poverty as a social issue in the early 1990s onwards, and how child poverty research has contributed to the development of political thought. The paper follows the use of a new paradigm of childhood research, and revisits the methodological approaches and main research findings that have enhanced the understanding of children as a new policy interest group in politics.

Feelings of being deprived in comparison to similar others have occupied authors from multiple disciplines, primarily as a potential predictor of various individual and societal outcomes, especially among youth. The present study, however, aims to explore whether this subjective relative deprivation, both individual and collective, can itself be predicted from particular personality variables, to shed more light on individual dispositions that lead to (un)favorable perceptions of contextual circumstances. Therefore, within the frame of Relative Deprivation Theory, this correlational study, including 735 participants recruited through the public educational system in Bosnia and Herzegovina (mean age 18.72; SD=1.54), indicated that lower levels of self-esteem and openness to experience, and higher levels of neuroticism and sensation-seeking are associated with higher relative deprivation. Canonical regression analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between personality and relative deprivation, deriving a significant canonical root (λ of .799, F(8,1384)=20.583, p=.000), accounting for 21% (rc=.444) of the variance shared between the variable sets. Personality traits’ contribution to the collective relative deprivation was lower than to the individual. The article analyzes the role that selected personality traits might play in the perception of one’s deprivation. Recommendations are given regarding future research to include a more diverse set of personality traits as predictors.
