The article discusses difficulties encountered by researchers of the Polish émigré press in the UK. The main problem is the incompleteness of archival collections and yearbooks of specific magazines, lack of reliable, holistic, scientific studies of this subject, significant dispersion of the collections, frequent lack access to them, required ability to read the political or social context of the sources burdened with provenance of specific political options, coteries and groups, necessity to reference the memories of a few living representatives of the generation of the „invincible”, who edited the refugee magazines. An important issue is the proper selection of sources.

Artykuł omawia trudności, na jakie natrafia badacz polskiej prasy emigracyjnej w Wielkiej Brytanii. Zasadniczym problemem jest niekompletność zbiorów archiwalnych oraz roczników konkretnych tytułów czasopism, brak rzetelnych, holistycznych naukowych opracowań na ten temat, duże rozproszenie zbiorów, często brak dostępu do nich, trudności w odczytaniu kontekstu politycznego czy społecznego źródeł, nacechowanych proweniencją określonych opcji politycznych, koterii i ugrupowań, konieczność odwo ływania się do pamięci żyjących jeszcze niektórych przedstawicieli pokolenia „niezłomnych” tworzących czasopisma uchodźcze. Za ważną kwestię należy uznać właściwą selekcję materiałów źródłowych.

W artykule zaprezentowano stan badań oraz perspektywy badawcze w zakresie źródeł do badań kultury czytelniczej zarówno w aspekcie historycznym, jak i współczesnym. Sprecyzowano pojęcie kultury czytelniczej w ujęciu jednostkowym i społecznym, a także określono zakres źródeł do jej badania. Wskazano na komponenty kultury czytelniczej i odpowiadające im źródła – szeroko rozumiane dokumenty recepcji – znaki proweniencyjne, materiały autobiograficzne, literaturę piękną i sztukę, listy prenumeratorów, akta notarialne, inwentarze, katalogi, dokumentację instytucji oświatowych, prasę, dyrektywy i instrukcje. Omówiono zależności „starych źródeł” od „nowych źródeł”, wskazując szczegółowe obszary refleksji naukowej w tym temacie.

The article presents the state of research as well as the research perspectives with reference to the research sources in reading culture in terms of the past and the present. It determines the reading culture definition taking the individuals and the society into consideration. It shows the components of reading culture and corresponding sources – widely understood the reception documents – provenance marks, autobiographical materials, literature and art, subscriber lists, notarial files, inventories, catalogs, documentation of educational institutions, press, directives and instructions. There have been revealed the dependencies between “the old” and “the new” sources, pointing the detailed areas of scientific researches.
