Mimo znacznego rozwoju metod badawczych w naukach społecznych oraz rozkwitu wysoko standaryzowanych metod ilościowych wpływ osoby badacza na cały proces badawczy pozostaje faktem oraz specyfiką nauk społecznych tak, jak na to wskazywał, na początku lat sześćdziesiątych dwudziestego wieku, Stanisław Ossowski, wybitny socjolog. Nakłada to na naukowca obowiązek samodoskonalenia i rozwoju osobistego, pozwala mu jednak kształtować swą rolę w sposób twórczy i doskonalący go. Doskonałą okazją do takiej refleksji jest badanie terenowe prowadzone w biednych dzielnicach krajów globalnego Południa, które można i warto podejmować bez zbędnego strachu i uprzedzeń. Należy jednak przyjąć odpowiednio otwartą postawę i gotowość do przystosowania narzędzi badawczych do panujących w miejscu badania warunków.

Despite considerable development of research methods in social sciences and popularity of highly standardized quantitative methods, the researcher's influence on the entire research process remains a fact and a characteristic feature of social sciences, as pointed out in the early 1960s by Stanisław Ossowski, a great sociologist. It makes the researcher responsible for his self-improvement and personal development, but also allows him to shape his role in a creative and enriching way. A field study conducted in the poor neighborhoods of the global South, which can and should be done without unnecessary fear and prejudice is an excellent opportunity for such reflection. Before approaching the field, an adequate open attitude and willingness to adapt research tools to the prevailing conditions in investigated space, should be taken.
