The hotel sector is linked to the excessive consumption of non-renewable resources, particularly water, energy and non-durable goods. Several hotel groups have developed voluntary self-regulatory initiatives that are aimed at improving the resource. Currently, there is limited research pertaining to the application of EMA and voluntary initiatives, particularly in the hotel sector. As a result, the implementation and application process of these initiatives remains unclear. A qualitative exploratory multiple case study research method was employed in this study. A total of 12 individuals participated in this study, which consisted of 3 general managers, 3 financial managers, 3 maintenance managers, from 4 hotels. The sample size was selected using purposive sampling. The study found that there is a fair amount of awareness, knowledge and experience of the EMA and the use of voluntary self-regulatory initiatives by the hotel sector in South Africa. However, the implementation of EMA and voluntary self-regulatory initiatives in the South African hotel sector is still at an elementary stage.

Thousands of years of development have made the production and consumption of water, energy, and food for urban environments more complex. While the rise of cities has fostered social and economic progress, the accompanying environmental pressures threaten to undermine these benefits. The compounding effects of climate change, habitat loss, pollution, overexploitation (in addition to financial constraints) make the individual management of these three vital resources incompatible with rapidly growing populations and resource-intensive lifestyles. Nexus thinking is a critical tool to capture opportunities for urban sustainability in both industrialised and developing cities. A nexus approach to water, energy, and food security recognises that conventional decisionmaking, strictly confined within distinct sectors, limits the sustainability of urban development. Important nexus considerations include the need to collaborate with a wide spectrum of stakeholders, and to “re-integrate” urban systems. This means recognising the opportunities coming from the interconnected nature of cities and metropolitan regions, including links with rural environments and wider biophysical dynamics.

Recently the economy is moving away from the linear model (take - use - throw away) where extensively used resources and manufactured products after their consumption were mostly landfilled to the circular model in which waste becomes a resource. The shift in the economy might trigger the growth, new jobs and improve competitiveness nonetheless numerous barriers were recognized. Reference is made in particular to financial incentives, organizational solutions and flexible policy. Developing the well-tailored financial instruments for entrepreneurs could support the first step on the path towards the circular economy.

W szczególności mowa tu o odpowiednich zachętach finansowych, rozwiązaniach organizacyjnych i dopasowanej polityce. Odpowiedni dobór instrumentów finansowych dla przedsiębiorców mógłby wspierać podjęcie pierwszych kroków na drodze do gospodarki cyrkularnej.

Research background: The value of clusters in developing advanced technology products and services as well as promoting regional growth is acknowledged by many policymakers and researchers (Lee et al., 2012). Hence, clusters are identified as enablers of the circular economy and resource efficiency in this study. Companies aim to enhance competencies and create competitive advantages in global competition and this can be achieved through pulling from a common and accessible pool of resources, information and demand for innovation which means that companies can profit from belonging to a cluster. Purpose of the article: The main aim of the article is to overview the scientific literature that addresses the circular economy, identify clusters and their role in the circular economy and suggest how small and medium enterprises could engage in a circular economy through clusters' performance development. Methods: Bibliometric literature analysis enables identifying the latest trends in scientific articles regarding a circular economy and clusters. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) allows for composing the scheme of the cluster?s competitive advantage within circular economy. Findings & Value added: The findings suggest that resource efficiency is considered to be one of the most important ambitions and clusters can work as enablers of a circular economy for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), gaining a competitive advantage at the same time. Clusters can encourage and provide conditions in which SMEs would turn to a circular economy. The scheme of Cluster's competitive advantage proposed by the author can help cluster's coordinators, policymakers and all the concerned parties to verify the importance of clusters' involvement in the circular economy.

The subject of the article is an analysis of the zero waste concept implemented by the European Union. This strategy is fully complementary to the EU's environmental and climate policies. Currently, environmental issues play an important role in public policy not only at the EU level, therefore it is important to take a closer look at the zero waste concept. The main research problem is the answer to the question about the function of the zero waste concept in the European Union. The solution will be sought by analysing the actions underlying the vision of resource efficiency and discussing EU legislative initiatives to bring the transition to a circular economy closer. The article includes the main assumptions of the zero waste concept and the EU's resource-efficiency strategy. It also presents activities that fulfil the tenets of zero-waste living. The next parts of the article include the analysis of the EU legislation related to the zero waste vision. There will be presented the existing legislative regulations in the European Union. Furthermore, there will be indicated the institutions responsible for the implementation of the zero waste strategy.
