The paper presents the methodology, which may be used to analyze 16th century translations of the Bible. The methodology consists of rhetorical criticism of the Bible and early modern literature as well as translation studies. Moreover, the paper summarizes several important works about rhetorical criticism of the Letter to the Galatians. A part of the 3rd chapter of the Galatians from the Calvinistic Brest Bible translated by a group of writers gathered around the Pińczów Gimnazjum is an example of such analysis. The two main aspects of analysis are elocutio and inventio of the text. The paper shows that inventio and translational dominant may be considered as related areas of study.

Budowniczy złotych mostów. Leśmian i retoryczna krytyka metafor by Kinga Dobrowolska is an example of a new comeback to Leśmian, which started about 10 years ago. The book uses the rhetorical criticism to have a new look on Bolesław Leśmian’s poetry. Although the composition of the work may be unsettled, it contains some interesting analyses of several poems.

The aim of the study is to describe the relationship between rhetoric and popular science texts. Scientific American magazine is taken as an example. In conclusion, the author suggests that the rhetoric of popular science texts rests on the presentation of a problem, avoiding controversy in the presentation of research issues, avoiding modal forms and the use of multiple elements of visual rhetoric. This article contains brief historical information about the development of the magazine Scientific American.

The article deals with issues present in the humanities undergoing the changes due to rhetorization of contemporary culture. First I am discussing the impact of the variability of modern culture on traditional humanities (new methodology and new theory of science based on a rhetorical approach to the text and its symbolic and ideological meaning). This caused the great development of various rhetorical studies in the 20th century (from philosophy of language to practical art of speaking and argumentation). In our time, those studies answer the questions: 1) why and for what reasons do we depend on other people's views? 2) how can we exert a positive influence by text communication on other individuals? Therefore, nowadays we are seeing a new rhetorical trend in communication studies concerning all the culture texts – this trend also affects literary studies and cultural anthropology: academic disciplines which adopt the research tools of the traditional and new rhetorical workshop. This new attitude towards the humanities has an impact on general education at schools and universities.

The article compares selected entries on Wikipedia concerning significant historical events in three language versions: Belarusian, Lithuanian, and Polish. The idea behind Wikipedia is that anyone can contribute to it, thus expanding the pool of shared knowledge. This model of an online encyclopaedia, however, can be accused of subjectivity. According to communication theorists, the Web allows people to live as if in a single global village; however, the field of historical discourse proves that virtual reality is rife with multiple villages, each presenting a different point of view. Wikipedia, which is a flagship example of the implementation of Marshal McLuhan’s concept, is no exception in this matter. In this study, I apply the method of ideological critique to investigate whether national values influence the objectivity of Wikipedia articles written in local languages. A comparison of multilingual Wikipedia entries reveals the prevalence of “local” points of view on controversial historical events.

The article is a reflection on the nature of a genre. It is set within the framework of contemporary rhetorical genre studies as a research approach situated alongside linguistic, literary, and media genre studies, which operates with a framework of its own research categories. It refers to rhetorical criticism as a method of studying artifacts in communicative space. The key category under consideration is the rhetorical potential of a genre as a communicative tool and the possibility of its discovery in critical reflection. An outline of rhetorical criticism based on four dimensions of a genre is presented: communicative-teleological, temporal-spatial, compositional-stylistic, and discursive-subjective. The study involves considering questions specific to each dimension about the particularities of the chosen genre. The article presents possibilities for formulating questions around categories relevant to each area.

The concepts of saga and rhetorical vision constitute an element of the method of rhetorical criticism of fantasy theme analysis, introduced by Ernest Bormann. A saga is a continuously told and re-told story of the accomplishments of an individual, a group, or an institution, explaining its place in the world, the purpose of its existence, and its modus operandi. The paper is an attempt at presenting the saga built around Bogoria, i.e. the local free monthly from Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Poland, which has been published since 1992 by the local Cultural Centre. The material for analysis comes from various jubilee and anniversary editions, which contain mainly articles and manifestos where the editors try to explain their perception of what a local newspaper should be and what role it should play in a local community. The paper discusses the transformation of the Bogoria’s saga from the righteous-social model to the social one.

Analizowany materiał pochodzi z wydań jubileuszowych – setnego i dwusetnego numeru, z numerów z okazji dziesięciolecia, dwudziestolecia i dwudziestopięciolecia czasopisma.

In the present article, the author argues for the usefulness and importance of rhetoric and socio-rhetoric for the reading of the New Testament texts. Part I is dedicated to the rhetorical approach. The point of departure are the remarks of the Pontifical Biblical Commission on the questionable rhetorical education of biblical authors, on may kinds of rhetoric, and on the limited applicability of rhetoric to the analysis of biblical text. The author answers the objections raised against the rhetorical method and argues for the use of Greco-Roman rhetoric as the compositional instrument closest to the cultural milieu of the New Testament authors. The Greco-Roman rhetoric presents itself as the best tool to explore the texture of biblical writings characterized by high residual orality. To substantiate it, the author shows the recent change of paradigm in the approach to the oral tradition and textuality in the Bible. Part I of the article finishes with the elaboration and exposition of the basic steps of rhetorical analysis proposed by George A. Kennedy.
