The article attempts to shed light upon the evolution of Gary Snyder’s “mountains-and-rivers” philosophy of living/writing (from the Buddhist anarchism of the 1960s to his peace-promoting practice of the Wild), and focuses on the link between the ethics of civil disobedience, deep ecology, and deep “mind-ecology.” Jason M. Wirth’s seminal study titled Mountains, Rivers, and the Great Earth: Reading Gary Snyder and Dōgen in an Age of Ecological Crisis provides an interesting point of reference. The author places emphasis on Snyder’s philosophical fascination with Taoism as well as Ch’an and Zen Buddhism, and tries to show how these philosophical traditions inform his theory and practice of the Wild.

The title of Kajetan JaksaMarcinkowski’s work indicates that Rzeki polskie is a descriptive poem, in which the lecture on Polish history is delivered. But as it turns out, both the composition and content of Rzeki polskie are complicated. The narrative is quite chaotic. The poet is posed as a wandering bard, listening to the voice of native soil and singing about history and legends. Marcinkowski’s poem can be interpreted as a poetic search for the sources of nationality. Collective history as well as the beliefs of the nation are as if charmed into the soil.

The aim of this article is to assess the spatial structure of built up areas in the valleys of the Łódź rivers. In the study, the valley zones, as buffers, values have been determined separately for each of the river, by calculating the arithmetic mean of the measured width of the intervals in comparable episodes (approx. 500 m) of individual river valleys. Then, using GIS tools were presented an analysis of the development and distribution of residential areas, service and industrial within valleys of Łódź rivers. It was found that the highest rate of the horizontal intensity of land use is characterized by the valley – Łódka, Bałutka, Sokołówka, which flow indoor canal. Among the built-up areas, the largest surface falls on the residential buildings, which occupy a total 2668,12 ha within the river valleys. They are located mainly on the Łódka, Bałutka and Olechówka.

This article is the first attempt in Poland to examine the following issues in The Book of Una, the novel by Faruk Šehić: the problems of autobiographic memory, war trauma, going through the trauma situation in a creation process (autobiography as a symbol of individual identity and an attempt to overcome the stressor). The analysis drew attention to the category of a journey into the depths of one’s self within the so-called past life regression present in the work by this Bosnian author. In the course of the examination, it was revealed that the intimate contact established by and between the protagonist with the important figures from his childhood, sentimental objects, the aquatic element, plant world and places of playing, adventure and shelter has a therapeutic dimension. The aforementioned issues were studied with the use of a set of scientific tools in the area of anthropology of culture (abjective experiences and objects, symbolism of blood, category of childhood), theory of trauma, hypnology and hyperesthesia, polemology, humanistic psychiatry, Bachelard’s theory of poetic image, topoanalysis and poetics of the elements. The process of interpretation also included the Jungian concept of structure of personality known as the Shadow archetype.

The information about the distribution of caddisflies (Trichoptera) in mid-western Poland being a part of the Wielkopolsko-Kujawska Lowland (WKL) faunistic region is still scarce compared to other regions. To close the knowledge gap, we investigated caddisflies larvae and occasionally imagines in a selected area in mid-western Poland in 2011. The aim was the preliminary estimation of species richness and abundance of protected, rare and endangered species in this part of WKL. For the study 63 sampling sites representing broad spectrum of habitat types were chosen and analysed with various ecological indices. In total, 75 species: 46 as larvae and 51 as imagines were found in the area. Among them, one protected species (Crunoecia irrorata), 5 listed in the Polish Red List (Erotesis baltica, Hydropsyche bulgaromanorum, Ylodes simulans, Limnephulus borealis and L. fuscinervis), and 11 species not reported for WKL yet were found in the area. In the whole material, the most frequent and dominant species was Limnephilus flavicornis. In contrast, 50 species were recorded in less than 5% of sites. The highest species richness was found in rivers and fish ponds with total number of 33 and 32 species, respectively, whereas the lowest one in springs (5 species) and bogs (6 species). The highest species diversity obtained with probability of intraspecificencounter (PIE) Index was found in fish ponds (0.90) and rivers (0.85) as well. In contrast, streams had the lowest PIE value (0.60) in the area. The most valuable habitat types with regard to protected, endangered and rare species were rivers and fish ponds, as well as lakes and streams of lower importance. To conclude, our investigation indicated a high species richness and diversity in the area, which was related to high habitat heterogeneity, thus having significant importance for biodiversity preservation in mid-western Poland. Moreover, fish ponds and rivers were the most valuable habitat types significantly contributing to species richness, diversity and preservation of rare and endangered species in this area.

The rivers of Polesia and Volhynia (the Horyn, Styr, Sluch, Pina, Prypiat Rivers and other) are analysed in the present paper as waterways which bring along modernity and carry it further inland on the one hand, and on the other, as guards of patriarchal hierarchies, which according to Orgelbrand’s Encyclopedia, are equivalent to a civilization referred to as moral, affirming simplicity, religion, and selfless relations with others. In the descriptions of places which constitute Kraszewski’s autobiography (travelogues, memoirs, letters, journalistic and fiction works) one may observe a kind of internal tension of the perceiving subject, who continues to value antiquity, but notices with certain nostalgia the anachronism of the world “at the banks of great rivers” and recognises the need for civilizational transformation.

The Brzanka Mountain Range in the Ciężkowickie Foothills has a dense river network. Unfortunately the contemporary maps contain only the names of some main rivers of the Brzanka Mountain Range. Local communities use the same set of names of rivers as cartographers, while studies in the historical geography of the Brzanka Mountain Range reveal a wealth of local hydronyms that have seemingly been forgotten. The article attempts both to reconstruct a set of hydronyms of the Brzanka Mountain Range and to explain their etymology. It shows that hydronyms change over time and that studies on local hydronyms can help restore the collection of the names of rivers in the Brzanka Mountain Range and provide interesting information related to the past of this region. Moreover, they reveal contemporary unknown facts related to the natural environment and settlement processes in the Middle Ages. A visual summary of the article is a map showing the Brzanka Mountain Range with its river network and associated hydronyms.
