The first part of the paper informs about research project concerning social and economic situation of disabled people and their families that has been started in ’93 under auspices of the Polish Academy of Science. Main efforts of the project cover 17 major areas of study: from living conditions of the disabled people and social attitudes towards them to their situation on the labour market and barriers that make an ideal of social participation as well as relevant efforts difficult to implement. The second part of the paper describes dynamic increases of the share of the disabled persons in the society and indicates number of social problems they are facing in their efforts to maintain more or less satisfactory social life.

W pierwszej części artykułu autorka prezentuje ogólną koncepcję projektu badawczego poświęconego sytuacji osób niepełnosprawnych i ich rodzin w polskim społeczeństwie, realizowanym od 1993 r. pod auspicjami Polskiej Akademii Nauk. Druga część tekstu wskazuje na rosnący udział osób niepełnosprawnych w polskim społeczeństwie i narastające trudności ich społecznej integracji. Autorka wskazuje też na to, że populacja osób niepełnosprawnych jest „populacją ryzyka” związanego z występowaniem w niej rozmaitych problemów społecznych.
