The aim of this article is an analysis of public employment services (PES) potential in responding to demographic change and anticipated labour shortages on regional labour market, covering case-study of selected initiatives recently undertaken in Pomeranian region. Contemporary institutional framework of PES embedded in regional and local self-government provides both certain opportunities and important restrictions for developing adequate services offer with regard to changing social and market needs. The article is a contribution to discussion on future direction of development which PES should opt for.

Celem artykułu jest analiza potencjału urzędów pracy i ich inicjatyw podejmowanych w warunkach zmniejszania się dostępnych zasobów pracy na regionalnym rynku pracy na podstawie studium przypadku woj. pomorskiego. Obecne uwarunkowania formalno-instytucjonalne urzędów pracy działających w zdecentralizowanej strukturze samorządowej stwarzają zarówno liczne szanse, jak i istotne ograniczenia dla adekwatnego i konsekwentnego dostosowywania oferty usług w powiązaniu ze zmieniającymi się potrzebami społecznymi i rynkowymi. Artykuł jest głosem w dyskusji nad pożądanym kierunkiem zmian, który powinny przyjąć publiczne służby zatrudnienia w najbliższej przyszłości.
