The article entitled “The consequences of structural transformations of leisure time on the ship” discusses the transformation of the structure of leisure time on the ship. The analysis is based empirical research carried out at an interval of forty years. The research material is supplemented with a statement posted on the seafarers' online forum. Comparative analysis revealed a tendency among respondents to the individual leisure activities. Such action is the isolation of the individual members of the ship's crew, and thus decrease the efficiency of cooperation in areas requiring seafarers. At the same time organizational changes in the modern fleet, which reduces to a minimum stopover in the port, thereby increasing the time of seafarers isolation from the broader social environment of intensifying the sense of social isolation. In the long term, lead to alienation of personality disorders influencing attitudes among other work.

Zarys koncepcji marynizacji

51%
PL

The paper presents the concept of marinization introduced by Ludwik Janiszewski. This concept was developed in sociology in the 70s, 80s and 90s of the last century. The concept depicts the influence of the sea on the life of coastal communities, on the development of specific social structure and marine culture. The concept of marinization was specified in three basic scientific dimensions. In the theoretical dimension, particularly important one, for this concept, it was to distinguish two main factors influencing the process and determine the direction of the relationship between the individual components of this process. In terms of empirical issue researchers’ efforts were focused on measuring the impact of the marine environment in various aspects of social life. In the methodological dimension the problem of constructing a list of indicators that adequately reflect this complex phenomenon proved to be particularly important. The article discusses the aforementioned dimensions of the concept of marinization. The text also includes a question about the validity of assumptions about the growing influence of the sea on social life. The apparent reduction of this impact (eg. a significant reduction in deep-sea fishing or Baltic fishing) suggests the question of the timeliness of this concept.

The author presents the outcomes of oral history  research relating to the history of the Czechoslovak Maritime Shipping Company from 1959–1989 in the form of a case study. The interpretation of the accounts of seventeen former Czechoslovakian sailors focuses on two aspects: their professional and family lives. The author recognises that these two aspects of the sailors’ lives were very often in conflict with each other, concluding that their work was often much more significant than their family life; that although they realised the problems that their families faced, they were unable to help by giving the work up to be with their families.  The text is supplemented with a methodological reflection that focuses on the issue of a researcher’s emotional engagement to the research subject. Finally, the author presents thoughts on parallel and potential comparative studies between the lives of the Czechoslovakian sailors (from a country without direct sea access) and Poland (a country with a very rich maritime tradition).
