“Now I rejoice o depart from this world!”: The saint’s death and the villain’s deathin the Old Russian texts of the 11th to 12th centuries In this article the questions of real and false values, life and death for an ancient Russian person soon after the adoption of Christianity are explored — on the basis of texts about Boris and Gleb and saint Theodosius of the Caves. The building of a person’s individuality in ancient Russia went in the frame of religious sphere, and in this way the moral ideals (and anti-ideals) were created. In the hagiographic texts “earthly” as a synonym of “worldly” is often opposed to “heavenly”. In the Life of Theodosius Nestor shows how the divine plan is grounded in the ordinary: even if the intention is high, one of its ends is here, in the usual human life. If the hagiographic texts about Boris and Gleb carried the idea of denial of the worldly for the sake of heavenly and eternal, then the Life of Theodosius carried the idea of their harmonization. The death of Theodosius opens the earthly way to the heaven.

Jeśli teksty hagiograficzne o Borysie i Glebie niosły ideę negacji świeckości wobec niebiańskości i wieczności, to Żywot Teodozjusza przynosi ideę ich harmonizacji — śmierć Teodozjusza otwiera ziemskiemu drogę do boskości.
Jan Długosz in his cards made a presentation of Annales…fifteenth century priest and reformer – Jan Kapistran. My purpose was to show the characteristic this person, something valued by chronicle writers. Długosz used different methods, to convince the reader about theconcepts of hero sainthood, for example descriptions such as: famous, reverend, smart-which come from the catalog, which were used by the author many times, symbolical, numbers – three, forty, a hundred, which enforce belief, that next to Jan amazing things are happening. Miracle making, prediction, healing, gift of tiers most appeared in this source biography. Comparing the preacher to St. Augustine strengthened the belief in the sanctity of the hero.
The standard etymological explanation of the Proto-Slavic adjective *svętъ ‘holy, saint’ – a word of extreme literary, cultural and religious importance in the Slavic world – concentrates on the formal match with Lithuanian šventas ‘id.’ and Avestan spəṇta‑ ‘life-giving, holy’ (PIE *ḱwen‑to‑, from the root *ḱwen‑). This article highlights the verbal formation seen in Latvian svinêtsvin svinẽjo ‘celebrate, venerate’, generally recognized as another reflex of the root *ḱwen‑ in Balto-Slavic, but without due attention to the formal implications. It is argued that both in Av. and in BSl. the adjective spəṇta‑/*svętъ behaves as an item participating in the so-called ‘Caland System’ (a set of arbitrary morphological alternations reconstructible for Proto-Indo-European).
The subject of this article is the procedure for selecting a saint of the Roman Catholic Church patron saint for the city, municipality or wider territory. The establishment of a patron saint is within the competence of the confessional authority, in particular, the bishop and the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sac-raments. The procedure consists of three stages: the election, acknowledgement and affirmation of the patron saint. The church’s current regulations regarding the election of patron saints are contained in two documents of the Holy See. The municipal council, the poviat council and the assembly of the province pass a res-olution on the patron at the stage of his election by the society and the clergy. The above-mentioned authorities do not take part in the next two stages. Entities of territorial self-government only have a supporting vote. They cannot independently establish a patron saint, regardless of the decisions of the ecclesiastical authorities. The position of administrative courts that the resolutions of the constitutive au-thorities of entities of territorial self-government belong to the category of public administration matters is unjustified. The decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments is addressed to a given diocese and not to local self-government authorities. The patron saint is established for a city, mu-nicipality, poviat, or for an area that does not have administrative borders. Entities of territorial self-government must respect the autonomy of the church authorities, and public authorities should be impartial in religious matters. Therefore, entities of territorial self-government do not have the competence to establish a patron saint for the promotion of a municipality, district or self-government of the voivodship. However, they can refer to saint persons at the symbolic level, for example, in the coat of arms or the names of streets and squares. This also applies to schools and hospitals run by local self-government authorities.
The main points are related to the cultural-anthropological (Michel Foucault) and theological contextualization of diseases (Jean-Claude Larchet) and their treatment in the Middle Ages. Based on the South Slavonic hagiographic literature, the terms physician and healer are defined and specified. The study focuses on the mental disease (insanity), which according to the methodology of Larchet is three types: somatic nature of madness, the madness of demonic origin, and madness of spiritual origin. Also partly concerns the problem of God fools’ insanity.
The article introduces description of extension and intension of the Russian lexeme SAINT basing upon its definitions presented in the diachronic and modern defining dictionaries (11 dictionaries were reviewed). The lexicographical data had been compared to reveal the difference between the core of the concept in the modern language and the same periods. The dictionaries treat the word SAINT (either noun or adjective) as polysemous; up until the 18th century all the meanings of the word were covered by the religious semantic structure included the following interconnected components: (1) source of saintliness; (2) guides to saintliness; (3) embodiment of saintliness; (4) manifestation of saintliness; (5) path leading to saintliness; (6) the men of God. The above semantic system may be treated as hierarchy made up along the axis ‘GOD - MAN’, and the sole and ultimate apex of such hierarchy is the Divinity. In the modern defining dictionaries, the meanings of the word in question (reflecting the religious knowledge about the universe and the reality of the human creative work) are not matching with above semantic system. Moreover, ‘the quintessence of the saintliness’ is no more God, but man. This is the indication of the fact that the idea of the Ecclesia of Heaven and of Earth (that had been formed under influence of the early ethnical and Christian traditions and theological and philosophical conceptualization of human being) is distorted in the mind of the modern Russian native-speakers.
On 8 September 1253 bishop Stanisław of Szczepanów was canonised in the basilica of St Francis at Assisi. A year later his relics were elevated to the altar in the centre of the crossing of the so-called second Romanesque cathedral on the ancient Wawel hill at Kraków. This elevation transformed the church, which had functioned for centuries as the seat of the second most important bishop in the country, into the centre of St Stanisław’s cult. In time the cathedral acquired other functions, becoming the Polish coronation church and royal necropolis, a true Kónigskirche, as well as undergoing numerous architectural transformations. All the transformations, especially in the western part of the church, were to a great degree linked with the presence of the saint’s shrine. Yet in the past students of the cathedral focused mainly on the changes in the structural fabric of the building. Only a few scholars have devoted their attention to other issues such as patronage or an ideological programme and, most importantly, to the study of the church as the main sanctuary of St Stanislaw.

Z czasem stała się też miejscem koronacji i mauzoleum królewskim; parokrotne przebudowy były w dużym stopniu związane z istnieniem ołtarza i grobu św. Męczeńska śmierć biskupa przy ołtarzu w momencie podniesienia Hostii czyniła go naśladowcą Chrystusa i membra Christi. Jana Ewangelisty z obrazem Chrystusa Zmartwychwstałego, a pokaźny krucyfiks królował nad mauzoleum.
The idea of “St. Stanislaus’Year” in Tarnów’s diocese was inspired by cardinal Karol Wojtyła, who prompted it to bishop Jerzy Ablewicz to commemorate the ninehundredth anniversary of a martyr’s death of St. Stanislaus. On Sunday, May 7, 1978 a celebration took place in Szczepanów, as announced in the letters of the Bishop of Tarnów the year before the nine-hundredth anniversary ofa martyr’s death of St. Stanislaus, thus marking the beginning of the ‘Year of St. Stanislaus’ in Tamow’s diocese. Cardinal Karol Wojtyła presided over a Holy Mass, which was concelebrated by the bishops of the dioceses in which St. Stanislaus of Szczepanów is especially venerated. The homily was preached by the Primate of Poland, cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. The Bishop of Tarnów said a prayer which he had written for the occasion: A prayer o f the congregation o f the diocese o f Tarnów to St. Stanislaus, its patron saint. The Mass ended with cardinal Karol Wojtyła’s solemnblessing extended to the pilgrims gathered at the field-altar with the reliquary with the Saint’s skull, which had been brought from the Wawel Cathedral. In this solemn service participated 44 bishops from Poland and from abroad. The main Sunday ceremony was followed by its octave (from May 8 to 14). Pilgrims from Tamow’s diocese and from other parts of Poland and from abroad were coming to Szczepanów throughout the year. ‘St. Stanislaus’ Year’ in the diocese of Tarnów finished on September 30, 1979 with an all-diocesan pilgrimage to Wawel and Skałka in Cracow. The “Year of St. Stanislaus’ was the time of deepening religious awareness as well as moral and spiritual revitalisation of the diocese. Pastoral activity was focused primarily on the strengthening of religious beliefs and forming moral attitudes of the faithful. A special emphasis was laid on the sobriety of the diocesans. Within the Parish Apostolate of Sobriety, the so called Circles of St. Stanislaus were created with an aim to propagate abstemiousness from alcoholic beverages. A visible enlivening of the worship of St. Stanislaus in the diocese was observed.

Znaczna liczba kandydatów do sakramentu bierzmowania wybierała sobie to imię. Liczne zaś pielgrzymki przyczyniły się do pogłębienia więzi diecezjalnej. Obchód „Roku św. Stanisława” w diecezji tarnowskiej walnie przyczynił się do podniesienia świadomości religijno-moralnej wiernych.

Kanonizacja i kult św. Piotra i kaplica papieska).
“Polish Christian tradition linked two bishops and martyrs - witnesses, so to speak, of our Christening and Confirmation. From the point of view of the history of redemption - a spiritual process progressing through the history of a nation - it is still verytelling. And it does not cease to be telling, just like in the life of each of us the dates of Christening and Confirmation do not cease to be telling, though we drift further and further apart from them with the passing away of the days of our life. We constantly realise that the dates of Christening and Confirmation were decisive for the coming of Christ into our life. That is why we come back to them. This is the reason why we will soon have to come back to the date 1079, remembering not only the day of the martyr’s death, but the whole seven years of the pastoral work of bishop Stanislaus (1072-1079) in Cracow. (...) If the meaning of St. Stanislaus in the history of redemption on our soil may be understood by analogy with developing of faith which takes place in man as well as in a given community or society, then the most adequate way of referring to the great personage after nine centuries would be working on such enrichment and deepening of faith as is required by our times.” In this way in 1970 Cracow Metropolitan, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, justified the necessity of solemn celebrations in honour of St. Stanislaus and showed their ecclesiastical and pastoral character. In the history of the Cracow diocese there has never been a celebration more carefully prepared than the one in worship of St. Stanislaus. No other celebration has been so deeply set in the theological, historical and pastoral context. It is not easy to find other events whose general outline would be so meticulously thought over. Preparations started two years prior to the main ceremonies, thus allowing many initiatives which enabled not only experiencing the jubilee year in a proper way, but most of all, a spiritual revitalisation of the faithful. Reading the addresses and sermons of Cardinal Karol Wojtyła we come across many trains of thoughts of St. Stanislaus. The patron saint was always present in the addresses of the Metropolitan. For the future generations it is important that owing to the initiatives of the Cardinal the cult of St. Stanislaus was revitalised.

Stanisława, obchodzono również 750-lecie opactwa mogilskiego; w 1973 r. obchodzono uroczyście 500. rocznicę urodzin Mikołaja Kopernika; w 1974 r. wspominano 600-lecie urodzin królowej Jadwigi; w 1975 r. wspominano 975-lecia ustanowienia metropolii gnieźnieńskiej i 50-lecie powołania do istnienia metropolii krakowskiej oraz otwarto synod metropolii krakowskiej; w 1976 r. uroczyście obchodzono 25. rocznicę śmierci abp. A. S. Sapiehy.
The author has presented the state of research on the works existing in Poland as well as the ones connected with the country. Then he has compiled and discussed the same theme scenes. That compilation of cycles presenting the life and martyrdom of St. Stanislaus the Bishop and the miracles after his death shows typological similarities and differences in depicting the events recorded before and after the canonization of the Saint. Those examples do not represent any faithful imitation of some earlier work; one can only trace some similarities and concepts based on iconographie models already existing in depicting Christ and the saints.

On September 8, 1753 a celebration took place in the Wawel Cathedral to commemorate the five-hundredth anniversary of the canonisation of St. Stanislaus. The main element of a specially prepared decoration was a structure of considerable size as sembled in the middle of the nave, opposite the martyr’s tomb. It served as a throne on top of which a late Gothic reliquary, made by a Cracovian goldsmith Marcin Marciniec, for Stanislaus’ head was placed. The structure was embellished with the Saint’s coats of arms and candelabras and over it a canopy with wings spread to the sides was hung. On both sides of the reliquary two eagles were placed. Two more, holding a mitre and a crosier, stood underneath. In the four comers of the structure four obelisks adorned with candelabras were placed, while the sides of the altar of St. Stanislaus had two more with lights and bishop’s insignia painted on them. Among various forms of relics veneration propagated by the Church after the Council of Trent, one was their solemn presentation to the congregation. The article analyses different examples of decorations connected with such presentations. As a close analogy to Cracow’s celebrations a jubilee of the nine-hundredth anniversary of the translation of St. Liborius from Le Mans to Paderbom celebrated in 1736 was chosen. The analysis includes annual celebrations inhonour of St. Florian at Sackingen and customs connected with the translations of relics from the catacombs in Rome to churches in the Habsburg countries. The examples listed and the analysis of the written sources about Cracow allowed a hypothetical reconstruction of occasional architecture and an interpretation of its symbolic contents.

W 1753 roku w katedrze wawelskiej świętowano obchody kanonizacji św. Stanisława Biskupa i Męczennika. Wraz z relikwią procesja przeszła obok grobu męczennika, a zakończyło ją odśpiewanie Gaudę Mater Polonia. Po zakończeniu uroczystości w katedrze biskup przeszedł do kościoła Franciszkanów, gdzie odczytano bullę beatyfikacyjną Józefa z Kupertynu.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest dziedzictwo kulinarne w kontekście wybranych elementów kultury religijnej. Omówiono przykłady promocji konkretnych potraw, wzorów żywieniowych nawiązujących do postaci określonych świętych (św.

The subject of this article is to show culinary heritage in the context of selected elements of religious culture. It discusses examples of the promotion of specific dishes, nutritional formulas referring to certain saints (St. Hyacinth, St. John Paul II), as well as places associated with sacred space (monasteries, sanctuaries). Such promotional practices have become more common in recent years and are used by many different groups, such as parishes, eateries, local municipalities, associations, etc., who organize various events at local and regional level (contests, fairs, festivals, etc.).
Te działania wzbudziły falę protestów oponentów, którzy oskarżali go o lewicowe poglądy i propagowanie teologii wyzwolenia (część trzecia).

The article, through the example of St. Oscar Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador in 1977–1980, shows that the sanctity is always embedded in the particular historical, geographical and spiritual reality – first part. The Archbishop, taking care of salvation of souls and peace in the country during the growing political and economic conflict, was taking all necessary efforts: he was a mediator between the government and dejected people, he admonished the military forces for their inhumanity; provided shelter and food to the people in need – second part. Further, the article shows that these actions awoke the storm of protests of the opponents, who accused him of left-wing orientation and the promotion of liberation theology. In doubts, St. Oscar sought spiritual support in the teaching of the contemporary popes, the Second Vatican Council and synods – and he used to find this support there. The last part of the article present St. Oscar as faithful to his vocation of being the shepherd “lams and wolves” to the last, and the consequences of his loss to the country. As the responsible for the salvation of confided him people, he heroically defended the sanctity and dignity of their lives until his martyr’s death while he was celebrating the Holy Mass.
Man's death was a turning point. Living in a material dimension ends and begins a new life form. Each of religion indicates the status of the man 's death. On the other hand, here in the material world died already lives differently, memory, consciousness of others and their actions. This is particularly evident in the case of public figures. A clear example of this was the experience of the death of Pope John Paul II and to commemorate it in the years following the death of the Poles. In the consciousness of the Pope's compatriots , and in their actions, John Paul II not only gone, but he was certain roles. Empirical studies conducted in the period between the death of the pope to his beatification allow to say that John Paul II was seen as a national hero, saint and teacher.
St. Stanislaus, bishop and martyr, is one of the few saints of the Church bearing a traditional Slavic name. It belongs to an Indo-European Anthroponomastic system as a compound name whose components represent a pattern inherited from the period of the Indo-European community. This is a fortune-telling name (a nomen-omen) given to a child on a wish of the parents, who wanted him to be famous (Polish ‘slawa’ means ‘fame’)- Today, in our Christian culture, in choosing a name for the child we considerthe following: 1) the child ‘brought’ his/her name (i.e. is given the name of the day’s patron; this is the gist of our ‘nameday’), 2) a family tradition, 3) respect for the grandfather or father (grandmother, mother), 4) fashion. Today’s anthroponomastic system in Slavic languages (except Bulgarian) has grown cold leaving us unable to acquire precise understanding of the meaning of the name. Besides, nowadays names only denote, theydo not mean anything. Compound Slavic names refer in their structure to names from other groups of the Indo-European community and are closely linked with a nation’s spiritual culture and appropriate ultimate and instrumental values. In Indo-European languages a different number of lexical components is used in names as their first or second part: in Old Indian - 865; in Old Persian and Median - 43; in Greek - 1015; in the Celtic group - 336; the German one - 1800 and in the Slavic group - 220. The most numerous in Old Polish anthroponomastics were names with the component slaw. As the first component - slaw appears in 4 names, and as the second, in 100. This component has appeared from times immemorial in Indian, Avestan, Greek and Illyrian names. Name Stanislaus is known in all Slavic countries, while its feminine form only in Polish, Bulgarian, Serb and Croatian. In Poland it has been in use since very old times up to now. Numerous surnames and names of places derive from it. The popularity of the name waned slightly in the 19th century, but it has never come into disuse as was the case with many Slavic names, which were ‘dug out’ in the 19th century, and not infrequently, erroneously read. A great number of Indo-European names with the component - ‘slaw’ testifies to the fact that people who bore that name always wanted to be the bearers offame, good fame that is, such as St. Stanislaus, bishop and martyr, has enjoyed.

Św. Stanisław jest jednym z nielicznych świętych Kościoła powszechnego noszących tradycyjne słowiańskie imię. Należy ono do kręgu imion dwuczłonowych, mających starą indoeuropejską tradycję.
This note constitutes a contribution to the history of worship of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, in the Opole are of Silesia, where this worship has been strong since he Middle Ages. Taking as an example the dedication of a parish church at Ligota Bial ka (German Ellguth) to St. Stanislaus, it wants to show the permanence of the rever nce for this Saint. The fact that a new church, built in the years 1908-1909 in the place f the old one (which dated back to the Middle Ages) received the same invocation is et another proof. Stained-glass windows designed by a Cracovian painter W. Tetmajer are a beautifiil decoration of this church.

Stanisława Biskupa i Męczennika. W ten sposób powstał nowy kościół, murowany z cegły i ciosanych kamieni w stylu neogotyckim, trójnawowy z transeptem, będący dziełem architekta Ludwika Schneidera z Wrocławia; robotami budowlanymi kierował budowniczy Heda, miejscowy doświadczony rzemieślnik, główny ołtarz rzeźbiony był w Nysie, a malowidła wykonał - według pomysłu ks.
The name Stanislaus (or its diminutive form) appears in Cracow burghers’ families in which names that sounded German, Polish or Ruthenian were recorded. We come across the name Stanislaus in the families of mayors of villages, aldermen, scribes, merchants, butchers, blacksmiths, maltsters and shoemakers. It can be inferred that the appearance of this name was widespread and encompassed all groups of burghers, which may be regarded as indirect proof of the popularity of the worship of St. Stanislaus.

For over one hundred years research discussions have revolved around two issues: was Skałka really the site of the martyrdom of bishop Stanislaus, and, what was the church like in its medieval phases: the alleged, pre-Romanesque phase and, confirmedby sources, the Gothic foundation of Casimir the Great. An argument over the site of the martyrdom will turn out to be unimportant if it is considered in two different meanings, two different orders of interpretation. In the historiographic meaning, bishop Stanislaus might have been killed on the Wawel hill, while in the hagiographic meaning, the martyrdom must have taken place on the site called Skałka, outside the town and the Vistula river, in a distant sanctuary of Archangel Gabriel. The latter of the aforementioned research questions - what was the church “NaSkałce’ like in the Middle Ages - was put at the end of the 19th century by Władysław Łuszczkiewicz. In an answer, he presented the churches imagined in the scenes of the Martyrdom of St. Stanislaus in triptychs from St. Mary’s church in Cracow and froma church at Pławno. He understood them as realistic views of Skałka at the beginning of the 16th century A survey of a broad material shows, however, that in the late medieval iconography of St. Stanislaus at least two architectural types of the church which is the background of the Martyrdom scene can be distinguished at the beginning of the 16th century. The question what Skałka was like in reality is a wrong question then and must be left unanswered. The right question is: why was the architectural background of the Martyrdom scene depicted in such different ways, and, was this architecture in its iconographic design really meant to show only the Gothic church ‘Na Skałce’. With varied realisations of details of the church itself, the common motives of all depictions of Skałka are: walls surrounding the hill, gates built in them - one, two or three, always open and flights of stairs or ladders leading to the gates from the site where the hired assassins mutilate the body of the Saint. Moreover, nearly in every depiction figures can be seen mounting the stairs towards the open gates. These figures as well as stairs or ladders or gates are not to be found in the texts of The Life o f the Saint because painted and graphic renderings have primarily moralizing aim. The archetype of ‘the stairs to Heaven’ is substantiated in the iconography of the Martyrdom as stairs to the church on Skałka.The interpretation of the stairs to Skałka can therefore be resented as follows: L i t e r a l l y , stairs to the gates are indeed stairs leading to the church ‘Na Skałce’. I n a n a l l e g o r i c a l interpretation, they are the Cross of Christ, who enabled thefaithful to ascend to Redemption. A typological unity of steps on Jacob’s ladder and the Cross of Christ has frequently been raised in exegesis, and St. Stanislaus appears here, like every martyr, as alter Christus. In a t r o p o l o g i c a l interpretation, ascending stairs indicate aspiring towards perfection through mounting the steps of deeds. I n a n a n a g o g i c interpretation, these stairs lead to the gates of heavenly Jerusalem.

Stanisława Biskupa i Męczennika. Jego imię nosi m.in. katedra wawelska - święte miejsce Polaków - symbol trwania narodu. Niniejszy artykuł, opisujący trzy krakowskie kościoły, zawiera każdorazowo krótkie kalendarium, przedstawiające najważniejsze dane z życia parafii, a przede wszystkim daty z dziejów budowy kościoła od momentu powstania ośrodka duszpasterskiego aż do momentu poświęcenia świątyni.
