The article describes challenges that appear while teaching a group with diversed language competence and skills as well as expectations towards the course, based on the experiences at the Polish language course at McMasters University, Canada. The Linguistics and Languages Institute offers only one Polish course per semester – on basic or intermediate level and this is why the choice of methods and strategies is vital: the future of the course relys on the effectiveness of the classes.
