Distinctive features involved in forming schoolchildren’s names have been revealed taking into account their residence in villages, towns or cities. The analysis has been based on the results of written surveys carried out among schoolchildren over the years 2009–2012 representing 227 general education schools in villages, towns and cities in the Lviv region. Based on the example of non-offi cial names of respondents from three types of residential areas, the correspondence of nicknames to the literary language and non-literary forms, the semantics of forming stems and the motifs behind non-offi cial names have been identifi ed. Common and distinctive characteristics of nickname – place of residence interaction have been detected.
