Abstract The article presents the basic assumptions of Rev. Bronisław Markiewicz’s pedagogy. Rev. Markiewicz was one of the outstanding Polish educationalists of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries; his pedagogical thought even today still fascinates many educationalists, making them masters of education. The text points to the unique character of Rev. Markiewicz’s pedagogic assumptions that is expressed in a really inventive way of using the traditional values of self-restraint and work. The author also points to the possibility of using Rev. Markiewicz’s pedagogy in modern pedagogical work, as it is a remarkably valuable “tool” in the process of shaping mature and harmonious personality in young people – a personality of good Christians and honest citizens. Material and methods Analysis of source materials and studies. Results Indication of the value of B. Markiewicz's pedagogy in relation to contemporary educational needs. Conclusions The need to disseminate among educators the thought and educational activity of B. Markiewicz.

Streszczenie Artykuł ukazuje podstawowe założenia pedagogii jednego z wybitnych polskich pedagogów przełomu XIX i XX wieku – ks. Bronisława Markiewicza, którego myśl pedagogiczna również dzisiaj nie przestaje fascynować wielu pedagogów, czyniąc z nich mistrzów w dziedzinie wychowania. Tekst wskazuje na oryginalność założeń wychowawczych ks. Markiewicza, która wyraża się w iście nowatorskim sposobie wykorzystania tradycyjnych wartości jakimi są powściągliwość i praca. Autor zwraca również uwagę na potencjalną możliwość wykorzystania pedagogii ks. Markiewicza we współczesnej pracy pedagogicznej, gdyż stanowi ona niezwykle cenne „narzędzie” w procesie kształtowania u młodzieży osobowości dojrzałych i harmonijnych - dobrych chrześcijan i uczciwych obywateli. Materiał i metody Analiza materiałów źródłowych i opracowań. Wyniki Wskazanie wartości pedagogii B. Markiewicza w odniesieniu do współczesnych potrzeb edukacyjnych. In this paper I deal with the question of what a good judge should be like from the perspective of virtue ethics. I believe a good judge should aspire to support the functionality of the justice. Judicial acts and speeches express the goodness of a judge. With the help of these I try to demonstrate that courage, self-restraint and ability to express oneself understandably and clearly are important judicial virtues. Each of them helps a judge and the justice itself look trustworthy. Public confidence in justice is essential to the functionality of the justice. That is why judges should aim for these character traits as soon as they prepare to take office and for the whole time they hold it.

V tomto článku se z hlediska etiky ctnosti zamýšlím nad tím, jaký by měl být dobrý soudce. Domnívám se, že dobrý soudce by měl usilovat o to, aby vše, co dělá, přispívalo k funkčnosti justice. O dobrotě soudce tak svědčí mnohdy jeho činy a projevy. S pomocí těchto projevů se snažím poukázat na to, že důležitými soudcovskými ctnostmi jsou odvaha, zdrženlivost a schopnost srozumitelně se vyjadřovat. Každá z těchto ctností napomáhá soudci na různých úrovních jeho profesní cesty, aby on i celá justice působili důvěryhodně. Důvěra veřejnosti je pro funkčnost soudnictví stěžejní. Soudci by proto měli o tyto ctnosti usilovat, ať už při přípravě na soudcovské povolání, či přímo při jeho výkonu.
