The aim of this article is to present an organized form of social activity of senior citizens in the local community based on the example of the project titled “CZAS na 5” realised by Lublin branch of the Polish Red Cross. Modern Polish society is an aging society. Currently this process becomes more dynamic, and demographic indicators suggest that this trend in the near future will be intensified. Therefore, activation of human resources, including seigniorial human resources, becomes necessary. The main task of the elderly persons is to adapt to the changing conditions of their life, and modify everyday behaviour according to their own, changing with time, needs. Social activity is an indisputable factor with major influence on the health and psychophysical condition of the elderly persons. Maintaining high physical, mental and social activity is one of the factors predicting a longer life expectancy, allows elderly people to maintain autonomy and independence, and thus contributes to the improvement of their quality of life.

W artykule zostało przedstawione zagadnienie starego człowieka i czasu starości w ujęciu znanego polskiego socjologa, Jana Szczepańskiego (1913 – 2004). Problematyka ta jest osadzona w szerszej całości - koncepcji filozofii spraw ludzkich, w której pierwszoplanową rolę odgrywa idea indywidualności. Zarysowane stanowisko jest głęboko humanistyczną refleksją nad sensem życia, tożsamością człowieka, procesami (auto)biograficznymi oraz poznaniem ludzkiego świata.

In this article the concept of senior citizens and the idea of old age is presented from Jan Szczepanski’s perspective (Polish sociologist, 1913-2004). The subject matter is analyzed from a holistic point of view and embedded in the philosophical concept of human affairs - where the leading role is played by individuality. This point of view is a profound reflection on the meaning of life, human identity, autobiographical processes and of the understanding of the human world.
In the presented paper the author focuses upon the participation of the elderly persons in museums’ offer. The author sees senior citizens as a group of special needs and expectations for the museum institutions. The needs of elderly people are characterised with respect to the research conducted in English, Australian and Francophone museum environment. The results of the research concerning the presence of senior citizens at museums and the typology of their attitudes towards the museum expositions are being reviewed. One of the important considerations of the paper is to see the role of a senior citizen as a companion, mediator and initiator of visits in the museum in his/her family environment. The author recalls chosen examples of museum programs dedicated to elderly people. All these analyses are made in the light of social changes and demographic projections observed in contemporary Europe (already known as “Silver Europe”) as well as the main museum trends on the turn of the twenty first century, those oriented in their activity to diverse (also in age) audience. Pointing to elderly people as a potentially developmental group of recipients of museum offers, the author, (referring to Kennet Hudson) proposes the double metaphorical term for the museum open to the senior citizens needs – “the museum with a chair”.

Having analyzed the level of senior citizens’ creative attitudes examined with the use of Creative Behaviour Questionnaire KANH, it has been pointed out that a vast majority of respondents showed creative attitudes (about 90% of all the examined). Senior citizens’ creative attitude may also result from their achieving some life stability which gives a sense of security accompanied by a willingness to live, curiosity about the world and frequently a healthy sense of humour, allowing senior citizens to distance themselves from problems. As far as gender is concerned, creative attitude was presented by all the men and about 80% of the women. Research proved that it might result from the fact that men are more self-confident, courageous, independent, open and less apprehensive in contacts with others than women. Research has also indicated the interdependence between senior citizens’ creativity and their age within the analyzed age groups. In the groups of respondents aged 55-60 and 60-70 respectively a number of about 90% of people with creative attitudes have been noted, while in the group of respondents aged over 70 there was 100% of them. It is worth adding though that they amounted merely to 10% of all the respondents.
Introduction. In Poland (but not only) the last decades have been characterised by a persistent phenomenon of an increasing proportion of elderly people in the population age structure. The dynamics of social changes, which are caused, among other factors, by demographic processes, makes the issue of elderly care one of the most important challenges today. In our country elderly care is organised mainly in the private sphere – the family plays a huge role here. Meanwhile, the families’ caring potential is diminishing. Aim. The aim of the article is to identify problems and challenges concerning the system of support for the elderly in Poland, including the support provided by informal caretakers. Materials and methods. The study is based on the desk research method. Results. Among the many challenges concerning the situation of the elderly in Poland, those related to health and health care are predominant. Life expectancy does not go hand in hand with health, and with age come (often multidimensional) care needs. Informal caretakers for older people are usually family members (so-called family caretakers), most often women – still underestimated allies of the state care system. Research to date has shown, among other things, that providing care for the elderly is time-consuming, demanding, lacking comprehensive support from the health care system, overburdening caregivers and making it difficult for them to fulfil their other roles, for instance: professional roles. Changing, improving and developing a senior care system so that it would meet the current needs of seniors and their caretakers is a very timely and urgent task. Improving the situation of informal caretakers means improving the situation of their charges.

Wprowadzenie. Materiały i metody. W pracy wykorzystano dane zastane. Wyniki.
