The article considers atypical sensory functioning of children with autism spectrum disorder. The redefinition of autism contained in the Classification of Psychiatric Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association DSM-5, including hyper- or hyporeactivity in the diagnostic criteria, justifies the adoption of a sensory perspective in a multi-profile diagnosis and in the planning of educational and therapeutic interventions. The article is an attempt to reconstruct Jean A. Ayres’ theory of sensory integration and to show the sensory difficulties experienced by those on the autistic spectrum. The article outlines the typology of sensory processing disorders advanced by Lucy Jane Miller and Winnie Dunn. For a better understanding of the functioning of the child with autism spectrum disorder it is important to analyse his/her individual sensory profile. The specific reception of sensory expressions disturbs or sometimes prevents the child’s full participation in the life of preschool or school, and handicaps learning. It is important to eliminate sensory barriers and to create a sensory friendly environment. The article emphasises that the sensory needs of children with autism spectrum disorder are an important factor conditioning their psycho-motor and social-emotional development. The article also presents practical implications.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with variable communication difficulties and disorders, mostly detected in pragmatic language abilities, sensory integration, and imitation. These components are important for a comprehensive speech-language therapy (SLT) intervention. This article describes the application of a new evaluation material for assessing imitation abilities, partial pragmatic abilities based on the recognition of graphical visual diagrams, and sensory integration in two boys with ASD (diagnosed with childhood autism in accordance with International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, WHO) with sensory integration difficulties, dyspraxia symptoms, and imitation skill disturbances. The main objective is to identify potential obstacles to SLT efficiency and the causes of disturbed pragmatic language abilities. The analysis of the case studies shows some progress in communication ability; however, some of the abilities related to sensory integration have been partially inhibited. In one case, we suggest the possible influence of the individual therapy based on the described detailed assessment.

The article focuses on the issue of dyspraxia in autism spectrum disorder. The first part discusses the term dyspraxia, which is variously defined and understood, and presents it in relation to the current taxonomy of sensory integration disorders. The subsequent sections present abnormal sensory processing, including motor planning in children with ASD, as well as its sensory origin. The final section reviews research on praxis in autism spectrum disorders. The analysis of literature indicates that abnormal sensory processing and motor planning may co-occur with autism. The main aim of this article is an attempt to show to what extent the theory of sensory integration takes part in explaining the course of (impaired) motor processes in people with autism.
