The paper is intended as preparation for a detailed analysis of Zbigniew Herbert’s reflection on ontology and epistemology. An initial assumption is that the poet tries to evoke the sensual dimension of experience in his poetry. The main focus of the analysis is the metaphor of touch that “sees”. It is conceivablethat through this metaphor Herbertexpresses a connection between touch and sight.

The paper analyses figurative applications of phrases containing words connected with human seeing (e.g. the verbs see, look, espy, nouns like sight, look, eye and adjectives such as blynd). It shows the motivation for metaphoric expressions used by Chaucer to express his thoughts and visions in a most vivid and precise way and their further development in the language system. The analysis is based on the data obtained from Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales (Ellesmere MS), the Oxford English Dictionary online and the Middle English Dictionary. As regards its theoretical basis it refers to Lakoff–Johnson’s theory of cognitive metaphor.

The aim of the paper is to present preliminary research results on the sight-centrism of the poetry written by Zuzanna Ginczanka. The author of the article draws attention to a paradox: it is the sight that is favoured in Ginczanka’s poems, and sight is traditionally perceived as ‘masculine’, intellectual, as opposed to ‘feminine’ senses that are more focused on touch. One of the more important features of sight-centrism in Ginczanka’s works is the observation of hues which may be found in the world. The paper investigates whether colours in this poetry change after the author of Of Centaurus moves to Warsaw. The consistency of poetic imagery placing the human being in natural landscapes rather than the urban space forces the researcher to reflect on the affiliation of Ginczanka with the Skamander group.

People of present times are facing a technological revolution, resulting from the intensive development of sciences, which forces rapid changes in the surroundings. In case of people with sight dysfunctions, development of new technologies creates some independence in gathering information, which was impossible before, and makes their participation in social life even more complete. It is an opportunity to avoid a disability or to reduce its consequences in a significant way. The goal of the presentation is to show the latest scientific achievements related to education, diagnosis and rehabilitation of people with sight dysfunctions.

The Influence of the Digitization of Life on the Deterioration of the State of Health of a Youth. The article undertakes the problems of a negative influence of modern IT technologies, computers and mobile phones among them, on a young man’s health. This influence shows itself in spine diseases, sight deterioration, reduction of the level of physical condition, exasperation caused by electromagnetic smog, exposing to cancer diseases by the radiation produced by mobile phones and base stations, as well as addictions, particularly to the receiving of new information in the form of e-mails and sms messages. All these threats especially relate to young people, for whom IT technologies are a natural ingredient of life and development taking place during the great and fast evolution of IT technologies.

Wzrok funduje jednostki z domen: wiedzy, kontroli i wzorowania się; słuch – wiedzy i posłuszeństwa; dotyk – szeroko rozumianego kontaktu; smak – aktów sądzenia; węch – wnioskowania. Rozszerzenia metaforyczne można też traktować jako pośrednie argumenty świadczące o hierarchii zmysłów, utrwalonej w języku, oraz o wartości poznawczej poszczególnych doznań sensorycznych.

The object of the analysis are linguistic metaphors (word-formation and semantic derivatives, phraseological expressions, conventionalized similes) treated as realizations of conceptual metaphors. Its aim is to establish what non-physical phenomena are conceptualized in Polish in terms of sensory perception. A clear connection can be observed between a particular sense (the quality of sensory perception) and the direction of metaphorical extensions. The sense of sight is the basis for conceptualizations relating to the domains of knowledge, control and following someone’s behaviour; the sense of hearing — the domain of broadly understood contact; the sense of taste — the domain of judgement; the sense of smell — the domain of drawing conclusions. Metaphorical extensions can also be treated as indirect evidence for the existence of a hierarchy of senses, rooted in language, and of the cognitive value of particular sensory experiences.

The novel The Idiot by F.M. Dostoyevsky is considered from the point of view of its composite communication with sensory motifs (visual, acoustical, tactile, olfactory). The understanding of the functioning of these motifs underlies the analysis of figurative and thematic structure, and some artistic details of the writer’s poetics. In the article it is shown that the sensory perception in Dostoevsky connects with the cognitive through the relations of symbiotic continuity. We showed connections between the areas of human activity — perception and understanding — and their interference in the text. Sight and hearing are understood by us as the key elements of a linear creation of a plot, touch and smell, in turn — as factors facilitating studying of some features of the author’s poetics. Organizing this material with a purpose to present various receptive fields (sight, hearing, tactile and olfactory perceptions) taking into account their mutual relations and dynamics, allows to reveal the author’s idea on a deeper and motivated level.

The chief aim of this paper is to demonstrate beyond reasonable doubt how, through an essential misunderstanding of the nature of philosophy, and science, over the past several centuries, the prevailing Western tendency to reduce the whole of science to mathematical physics unwittingly generated utopian socialism as a political substitute for metaphysics. In short, being unable speculatively, philosophically, and metaphysically to justify this reduction, some Western intellectuals re-conceived the natures of philosophy, science, and metaphysics as increasingly enlightened, historical and political forms of the evolution of human consciousness toward creation of systematic science, a science of clear and distinct ideas. In the process they unwittingly wound up reducing contemporary philosophy and Western higher education largely into tools of utopian socialist political propaganda.
