Zróżnicowanie uwarunkowań rozwoju w Polsce jest problemem często opisywanym w literaturze przedmiotu. W ostatnich latach szczególnego znaczenia nabiera zwłaszcza kwestia rozmiarów i przyczyn niespójności obserwowanych wewnątrz regionów. Niniejszy artykuł na bazie rozważań teoretycznych poświeconych uwarunkowaniom rozwoju regionalnego przedstawia wyniki i wnioski z badań przeprowadzonych wśród dolnośląskich powiatów, mających na celu określenie ich sytuacji w sferze społecznej oraz przyczyn występujących w tym zakresie dysproporcji.

Differences in the socio-economic conditions in Polish regions are widely described in the literature on the subject matter. The results of empirical research allow to indicate consider-able variation among the poviats in Lower Silesian region. It should be noted that the observed diversity over the Lower Silesian poviats during the investigated years did not show a downward trend, which should be a starting point for the debate over the particular tools for narrowing the gap between the least and most developed areas.
