This article examines the use of microblogging service Twitter during the period of the presidential election 2013 in the Czech Republic and aims to contribute to a development of an emerging research field to which only a marginal interest of academics have been devoted so far, especially in the Czech Republic. A multi-method approach is used to analyze the dataset of tweets, which have contained predefined hashtags within a course of four weeks period – including both, the first and the second round of elections. The findings indicate that the debate on Twitter “copies” events in mainstream media (mainly presidential TV debate), while linking to information sources in posts does not necessarily lead to the official media sources. The analysis also reveals that tweets most often refer to Karel Schwarzenberg, in comparison with the names of other candidates, and that among the themes of tweets and retweets the most frequent topics are the campaign and political preferences which suggests the potential of Czech Twitter to form a basis of online political communication.
Young people love being online. It is true for Hungarians as well, and communications technology plays a strong role in their lives. Young people (born in 1982-1996) were asked about their thoughts on the role of social network and being online in their lives. As a result, opinions of 662 respondents were collected through the method of online survey. The research results indicate that they are quite conscious social network users. The Generation Y’s life has been strongly determined by the existence of technological devices, and the communication through online sites. They especially like the social media applications, which basically determine their everyday life, friendships. The users pay just a slight attention to the access to their profile and set up restrictions despite the fact that they also spend most of their time in the cyberspace. The representatives of the generation clearly form a homogenous group, thus supporting the definition, which states that the members of Generation Y were born between 1982 and 1996. On the basis of our research, it can also be concluded that they form a homogenous group on the basis of their Internet usage patterns too.

Network and political networks have become today an important challenge for Europe. In addition to the opportunities they offer, they also carry a number of risks. The Internet is changing not only the channels of political communication, but also the content of the policy. Unquestionably, the Internet is now one of the determinants of an individual’s position on the social ladder. The use of network resources and possessing digital competences are a condition of being able to access cultural heritage (online distribution channel is becoming the main channel of its promotion), access the offer of the public administration (digitalisation of the public services) and, above all, exercise and search for work (telework, job advertisements). The Digital Agenda is an important policy challenge for the European Union countries.
This paper is a trial of capturing of a relation between traditional public sphere atrophy and the augmentation of a network public sphere. A thesis is advanced that the traditional public sphere is subject of the atrophy, however, the entire network public sphere is subject of the augmentation process. Such a formulated thesis forces a choice between two following issues. The first of them regards a relation between factors, which stimulate the atrophy and the augmentation. The second issue regards a role played by social media in the network public sphere. Considerations included in the paper are based on the public sphere theory of J. Habermas and on the M. Castells’ network society theory.

The main subject of this article is the condition of artificial languagesin contemporary social media. An analysis of the available statistics of YouTube, Wikipedia and Facebook shows the unwavering position of Esperanto as the most common artificial language. Other artificial languages, primarily auxiliary languages created in the 19th and 20th centuries, such as volapük, ido, novial, interlingua, interlingue, find their niches in social media, but their presence seems to be supported by very narrow groups of enthusiasts. Contemporary artificial language projects, such as lojban or toki pona are in a similar position. Although Internet is the natural environment for their development, they have not managed to gain wider popularity among users. Certainly, artistic languages embedded in well-known popular culture texts find a great resonance among the internauts, as shows the examples of Klingon and Sindarin languages mentioned in the article.
Nowadays, social media are dominating the life of people. Facebook has become noticeably widespread among the youth, and students in particular. Research has indicated that Facebook could be an effective platform for language learning. This study, therefore, comes to explore the effects of Facebook-assisted teaching on learning English for specific purposes by students at the University of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. A sample of 64 students from the Faculty of Business Administration, taking a Business Letters course in English, were divided into a Facebook-tutored group and a traditional classroom tutored group and were given the same vocabulary content. The two groups were given pre- and post-tests to measure their vocabulary learning, and were subjected to an interview to gauge their attitudes towards the instructional methods which were put to use. However, no significant difference between the two groups was found in terms of achievement in spite of the positive response and the high satisfaction level the Facebook-tutored students showed towards the use of such a platform.
