The article presents the results of research into socio-cultural trauma in Central Eastern Europe. In order to verify the theory of trauma, representative survey data obtained in Belarus, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Russia and Ukraine were used. The conducted analyses have shown that post-communist societies negatively evaluate changes in the economic and political system. Trauma stems from the decreased quality of life and increased crime rate. The surveyed residents of postcommunist countries claimed that the system transformation was disadvantageous to them, and, due to trauma, they saw the future pessimistically. The reaction to their emerging trauma was their nostalgia for communism and the social security it offered. Factors mitigating trauma in post-communist societies are education, age and pro- European tendencies.

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań nad traumą społeczno-kulturową w Europie Środkowo-Wschodniej. Do weryfikacji teorii traumy zostały wykorzystane reprezentatywne dane sondażowe z Białorusi, Bułgarii, Węgier, Rumunii, Polski, Rosji i Ukrainy.

The article inquiries into the influence of age on the adaptation to changes among post-Soviet societies. The analysis of secondary data from survey research conducted in representative research samples in post-soviet republics was used in the research. Survey data from Russia (N=992), Belarus (N=1034), Moldova (N=970) and Ukraine (N=1000) was analyzed. The results show that the age facilitates positive adaptation. Younger generations had a higher level of happiness, evaluated their financial situation, their standing in the social hierarchy and prospects for the future better. The highest level of satisfaction with democracy was noted in Belarus and Russia. Lower marks were given by the citizens of Moldova, whereas the biggest disappointment was noticed in Ukraine. The Russians and the Belarusians followed by the Moldovans were located on high positions on the continuum of adaptation to social changes, but the Ukrainians managed to adapt to the system to the lowest degree.
