For a Relational Critical Discourse Analysis

100%
EN
This paper proposes a relational and critical sociological perspective on discourse analysis, in particular on so-called “Critical Discourse Analysis” (CDA). The main argument of this paper is that CDA has not yet been able to turn its critical perspective towards its own field. Meanwhile, neither CDA nor other schools of discourse analysis can still pretend not to be integral parts of the system legitimizing social hierarchies in modern societies. The paper argues that discourse analysis can be seen as highly dependent on power relations, both because of its institutional positioning and because of its restricted reflexivity. A call for the development of a critical sociology of discourse analysis based on a relational approach is therefore presented. Its draft programme is largely based on inspiration from the sociology of knowledge, in particular from “the sociology of sociology” of Pierre Bourdieu.

The paper deals with the description of linguistic knowledge using the theory of paradigms. The author focuses on two aspects of linguistic paradigms: the integration and the differential, highlighting the diversity of research directions in modem linguistics. The method proposed by the author is based on the assumptions of the sociology of science, according to which linguistics is regarded as a social system. Within the new scientific discipline described as linguistic sociology, a complex of the research procedures is expected, such as bibliometric analysis, analysis of public opinion, thematic analysis of journals, scientific sessions, grant policy analysis, analysis of academic and educational programmes of language learning, etc.

The author considers the impact of postmodern culture on the contemporary humanities, including linguistics. Characteristic for postmodern cultural relativism is reflected in the diversification of scientific programs, what results in breach of communication in the research community. The crisis of discourse is treated as focusing of scholars on their own ‘points of view’, preventing the discussion and views exchange between representatives of different scientific formations. The author shows that the principle of complementarity provides the philosophical basis of the sociocultural processes in the science sphere. Syndrome of accompanying is a different effect of influence of postmodernism on the area of scientific activity. This phenomenon consists in the manipulative use of the group affiliation with the aim of receiving various kinds of profits. Therefore, the author writes about pragmatic consumerism in the modern science.
