People from war-torn countries and countries suffering economic hardships are on the move in search of a better life or of a refuge. The host countries are challenged: To ensure equal access to public services, civil and political participation of migrants and refugees means to tear down the language barrier. Only translating and interpreting can offer a realistic, time-sensitive solution to this challenge and give “speechless” communities a voice. It is the objective of the article to investigate the expectations we can have from technology in public service translation compared to the performance of professional communicators; The issue of what a machine can(not) do and to fathom, when a professional translator has to intervene, needs a bottom-up approach and will be discussed against the backdrop of public service translation as domain-specific intercultural communication.

Noun zakład (plant) appearing in the names of enterprises is not very popular among onomasticians. It may be an interesting subject of research for translators in connection with problems occurring during attempts to translate it into a foreign language. In Polish names of medical institutions, this noun is used not only in the sense of an enterprise/institution or its part, but also as an element of statutory defined names. Based on Polish law, this article details the possible meanings of the noun zakład in Polish names of medical facilities. The knowledge of individual types of facilities and their scope of competence constitutes the basic knowledge of a translator, necessary for the correct translation of the names of medical facilities. The main research objective was to determine the issues of translating into German the Polish names of medical facilities containing the noun zakład based on the available workshop aids. First, the translations proposed by dictionaries and on translator forums were critically evaluated. However, due to the fact that these aids contain only the translation of selected components of the names of medical facilities, it was necessary to obtain the translations of full names. Therefore, an attempt was made to determine whether the translators took into account the different meanings of the word zakład in the individual names, on the basis of ordered translations of selected names of medical institutions made by professional translators.

In the Polish education context, the use of concrete translation assignments in the training of translators is a relatively new practice. The theoretical basis for such a teaching method combine aspects of sociology, didactic approaches originating in social constructivism and organizational procedures characteristic to knowledge transfer projects. The article presents a pilot translation project conducted in the academic year of 2011/2012 by the students of the Postgraduate Translation School at the Institute of Romance Studies (University of Wrocław). The project consisted in the translation of a tourist text from Polish into Spanish. The conclusions drawn from this experiment reflect its complex nature, at the same time providing a departure point for future projects of a similar type.
