In the framework of Medieval logic, a somewhat enigmatic logical genre, de obligationibus, developed. It concerned an analysis of a certain form of “disputation” taking place between an opponent and a respondent - the opponent successively put forward particular assertions to the respondent and he always had to assume a certain position towards them according to precisely stipulated rules. Modern interpreters are often not certain what precise purpose this logical genre served, and their opinions on the manner of its elucidation, using concepts of modern logic and inserting it into the contemporary approach of modern logic, often diverge. I believe that if this genre is to be correctly understood, it is in considerable measure necessary to set out from its probable source, that is from the analysis of dialectical argumentation in Aristotle’s Topics, and less so to try and equate the doctrine with the often very specialized methods of modern logic. In the treatises of de obligationibus, that is to say, against the backdrop of a stylized, dialectical disputation, disparate logical problems are mulled over.

V rámci středověké logiky dochází k rozvoji dnes poněkud záhadného logického žánru de obligationibus. Jedná se o rozbor jakési formy „disputace“ probíhající mezi oponentem a respondentem - oponent předkládá respondentovi postupně jednotlivá tvrzení a on k nim vždy musí podle přesně stanovených pravidel zaujmout určité stanovisko. Moderní interpreti si často nejsou jisti, k jakému účelu byl tento logický žánr rozvíjen, a jejich názory na způsob jeho objasnění pomocí pojmů moderní logiky a jeho zařazení do soudobých logických koncepcí se často rozcházejí. Domnívám se, že k pochopení tohoto žánru je potřeba větší měrou vyjít od jeho pravděpodobného zdroje, totiž rozboru dialektické argumentace v Aristotelových Topikách, a méně se snažit tuto nauku ztotožňovat s často velmi specializovanými moderními logickými postupy. Ve spisech de obligationibus se totiž na pozadí stylizované dialektické disputace rozebírají různorodé logické problémy.
