Dzięki postępowi wiedzy i technologii medycznej wypracowano szereg zasad, które stanowią podstawowy standard oceniania noworodków oraz usprawniania niemowląt. Niezwłocznie po narodzinach noworodek poddawany jest ocenie według pięciostopniowej skali Virgini Apgar.Kluczowe jest również postępowanie pielęgnacyjne z nowo narodzonym dzieckiem. Pielęgnacja noworodka, szczególnie przedwcześnie urodzonego, w pierwszym etapie życia opiera się na kilku zasadach. Fizjoterapeuci wykorzystują wystandaryzowane testy i skale rozwojowe do oceny rozwoju psychomotorycznego. Prawidłowa analiza jakości wzorców postawy i ruchu stanowi bezpośrednią bazę do określenia bliższych i dalszych celów w terapii dziecka.

The knowledge and medical technology have developed a number of principles which constitute a basic standard of evaluation and improvement. A newborn is assessed according to the Virginia Apgar scaler. A care of the newborn child is very important too. The care of the infant, especially a newborn, is based on several principles. Physiotherapists use standardized tests and scales of development for the assessment of psychomotor functioning. Proper analysis of the quality patterns of posture and movement is a direct basis for further determination of the targets in the treatment of a child.
