The aim of the paper is to present some experiences in teaching Small Area Estimation (SAE). SAE education experiences and challenges are analysed from the academic side and from the NSI side. An attempt was undertaken to discuss SAE issues in a wider perspective of teaching statistics. In particular, the topics refer to Polish conditions, but they are presented against the background of selected international experiences and practices. Information comes from a special inquiry - a survey conducted among employees of statistical offices and academics from universities involved in SAE research. A further issue is inclusion of SAE in the EMOS project (European Master in Official Statistics). The survey is extended with information collected by monitoring of trainings and projects organized by the leading centres dealing with SAE. The results obtained are related to a similar survey within Eurostat project: ESSnet on Small Area Estimation, which was conducted in 2010. The study includes interest in learning and the need to implement SAE methodology, a range of subjects taught as well as a range of applications, forms of training, type of courses, software used and teaching methods. In particular, it intends to answer how strong the interest in small area estimation is, what the demand for practical and theoretical knowledge in the field is and what the recommendations for universities and statistical institutes are.

Rola statystyki w państwie i społeczeństwie, zarówno w szkolnictwie, jak i biznesie oraz administracji publicznej, wymaga dogłębnego przemyślenia. Artykuły zamieszczane w czasopiśmie naukowym poświęconym statystyce — a przynajmniej część z nich — powinny mieć także charakter popularyzacyjny i dydaktyczny, a zatem przystępny dla większego grona czytelników niestatystyków mających dostęp do Internetu. Z okazji jubileuszu 60-lecia Redakcja „Wiadomości Statystycznych” wprowadziła dział „Edukacja statystyczna”, służący upowszechnianiu wiedzy statystycznej w społeczeństwie, co może się przyczynić do poprawy efektów nauczania statystyki w szkołach oraz popularyzacji myślenia statystycznego w społeczeństwie.

The role of statistics in the country and society, both in education and business as well as in public administration, requires thorough reconsideration. The articles published in the scientific journal devoted to statistics — at least some of them — should have promotional and educational character to be more comprehensible for a larger group of readers-not-statisticians who have access to the Internet. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary, the editorial board of ”Statistical News” introduced the section ”Statistical Education” with the aim to promote statistical knowledge in the society. It can help improve the effects of teaching statistics in schools and popularize statistical thinking in the society.

In the presence of massive data coming with high heterogeneity we need to change our statistical thinking and statistical education in order to adapt both - classical statistics and software developments that address new challenges. Significant developments include open data, big data, data visualisation, and they are changing the nature of the evidence that is available, the ways in which it is presented and the skills needed for its interpretation. The amount of information is not the most important issue – the real challenge is the combination of the amount and the complexity of data. Moreover, a need arises to know how uncertain situations should be dealt with and what decisions should be taken when information is insufficient (which can also be observed for large datasets). In the paper we discuss the idea of computational statistics as a new approach to statistical teaching and we try to answer a question: how we can best prepare the next generation of statisticians.

W artykule omówiono najnowsze wyzwania badawcze i dydaktyczne związane z edukacją statystyczną społeczeństwa. Rewolucja technologiczna powoduje radykalne zmiany życia gospodarczego i społecznego. Wymagają one przekształcenia sposobu myślenia i działania. Społeczeństwu potrzebna jest statystyka, która dostarcza informacji o kraju i jego sąsiadach, ponieważ dzięki niej obywatele mogą aktywnie uczestniczyć w procesach demokratycznych. Te nowe warunki określają zadania stawiane przed statystykami — rozwijanie umiejętności statystycznych oraz dostosowanie przekazu informacji statystycznej do potrzeb obywateli.

The article discusses the latest challenges of research and teaching related to statistical education of the society. The technological revolution change the economic and social life radically. They require a transformation of the way of thinking and acting. Society need statistics that provides information about the country and its neighbors. Through statistics citizens can actively participate in democratic processes. These new conditions define the tasks set for the statisticians — to develop statistics skills and adapt statistical information to the needs of citizens.

В статье рассматриваются последние проблемы исследования и преподавания в области образования статистического общества. Научно-техническая революция влияет на изменения экономической и социальной жизни. Изменения трубуют трансформации мышления и действия. Общество нуждается в статистике, которая предоставляет информации о стране и ее соседях. Благодаря ее граждане могут активно участвовать в демократических процессах. Новые условия определяют задачи, поставленные статистике — развивать статистические знания и регулировать поток статистических информаций согласно потребностям граждан.
