Deze bijdrage wil aan de hand van een corpus van acht hedendaagse films uit België en Nederland (vier originele versies en vier die hun Nederlandse of Vlaamse remakes zijn) kijken naar het gebruik van diminutieven in beleefdheidsstrategieën in Nederland en Vlaanderen. Het corpusmateriaal toont een zichtbaar verschil in zowel kwantitatief (174 diminutieven in de Nederlandse films en 275 in de Belgische) en kwalitatief gebruik van diminutieven in Nederland en België. Naast de primaire functie heeft het verkleinwoord in beide variëteiten van het Nederlands een aantal pragmatische functies, maar het wordt in bepaalde contexten vaker gebruikt in België. Dit komt overeen met het gebruik van diminutieven in beleefdheidsstrategieën. Terwijl de Nederlanders en Vlamingen op een soortgelijke manier gebruik maken van positieve beleefdheidsstrategieën, is er in de negatieve strategieën een duidelijk verschil.

Niniejszy artykuł skupia się użyciu zdrobnień w strategiach uprzejmościowych w Holandii oraz Flandrii, niderlandzkojęzycznej części Belgii. Na cele badania zestawiono korpus składający się z ośmiu belgijskich i holenderskich filmów, z których cztery są wersjami oryginalnymi, a cztery — ich holenderskim albo belgijskim remakiem. Materiał językowy z korpusu pokazuje, że w użyciu zdrobnień w Holandii i Flandrii istnieje zarówno różnica ilościowa (174 zdrobnienia w filmach holenderskich i 275 w belgijskich), jak i jakościowa. Choć w obu odmianach języka niderlandzkiego zdrobnienia, obok swojej podstawowej funkcji, pełnią również podobne funkcje pragmatyczne, to ich użycie w kilku z nich jest w Belgii większe niż w Holandii. To przekłada się też na użycie zdrobnień w strategiach uprzejmościowych. O ile Holendrzy i Flamandowie w podobny sposób stosują zdrobnienia w pozytywnych strategiach grzecznościowych, to w negatywnych można zauważyć dość wyraźne różnice.

This paper, using a corpus of eight contemporary films from Belgium and the Netherlands (four original versions and four that are their Dutch or Flemish remakes), aims to look at the use of diminutives in politeness strategies in the Netherlands and in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. The corpus material shows that there is a visible difference in both the quantitative (174 diminutives in the Dutch films and 275 in the Belgian ones) and qualitative use of diminutives in the Netherlands and in Belgium. Besides its primary function, the diminutive has several pragmatic functions in both varieties of Dutch, however it is more frequently used in certain contexts in Belgium. This corresponds with the use of diminutives in politeness strategies. While the Dutch and Flemish use diminutives in a similar way in positive politeness strategies, in the negative strategies, there is quite a clear difference.
