Archaeological excavations in the 2017 season continued the investigation of the early Byzantine and early Islamic House H1 in the northeastern part of ‘Marea’. The building had already been excavated, but required further study to identify the type and function of structures in its immediate vicinity. Five stratigraphic trenches were excavated, exploring a well shaft, one of the wall abutments, a small cell added to the building, a sewer and streets with an accumulation of debris and rubbish. This also enhanced a better view of the house surroundings as well as their development in the course of the 6th century and later. A range of Roman ceramics from layers underlying the house was also discovered in the deepest of the trenches.

The article is devoted to the issue of renaming the streets in Ukraine which were named after famous politicians and military men of Soviet epoch, the authors consider contradiction between historically established toponymy and objectives of the Soviet toponymic policy. The process of reintroducing historical names and renaming the main streets of the Soviet period is an important element of the modern process of national and governmental development, revival of national consciousness and national memory.

Problem brukowania rynku oraz głównych ulic miejskich był jedną z kluczowych kwestii związanych z funkcjonowaniem i rozwojem miasta Wolbromia w XIX wieku. Działania zmierzające do wybrukowania rynku zainicjowano w roku 1822 dzięki burmistrzowi Dominikowi Bażance. Po zakończeniu prac w roku 1825 przystąpiono do kładzenia kamiennej nawierzchni na najważniejszych ulicach miejskich. Jednym z powodów brukowania miasta był fakt, iż przez Wolbrom przechodził ważny szlak handlowy, a lepsze drogi i infrastruktura pomagały w jego rozwoju. Wykonawcami robót były osoby prywatne mistrzowie brukarscy lub przedsiębiorcy zatrudniający specjalistów. Z reguły wywiązywali się oni z kontraktów, lecz czasami dochodziło także do przypadków nadużyć.

The problem of paving the market square and the main streets of the city was one of the key issues connected with the functioning and development of the town of Wolbrom in the nineteenth century. It was Mayor Dominic Bażanka who in 1822 took some measures to pave the main market square. After the completion of the work, in 1825 laying the stone surface on the main streets of the town was initiated. One of the reasons for paving the town was that an important trade route crossed Wolbrom and better roads and infrastructure helped in its development. The work was contracted to private persons, paving experts or entrepreneurs employing specialists. As a rule, they honored their contracts, however some cases of malpractice were recorded.

The ancient topography of the settlement on the northeastern promontory at ‘Marea’ (North Hawariya) was the subject of investigations carried out at the site in 2018 within the frame of a broader excavation project. Fieldwork established the date of some structures recognized along an ancient road. The oldest remains turned out to be from the Roman period, when the promontory became a rubbish dump for production waste, mostly sherds of Amphores égyptienne 3 and 4, from the nearby pottery kilns. Two superimposed occupation levels were recognised, the earlier one from the beginning of the 3rd century AD or later, the later one from the 5th–6th century. The buildings followed a regular grid that fits into the overall plan of the town. The research has resulted in a better understanding of the changes occurring in this part of ‘Marea’.

The article presents the problems of building and maintaining urban transport infrastructure in Warsaw at the turn of the 20th century. The text concerns Kajetan Mościcki (1855–1933), engineer, who was appointed by the acting Mayor of Warsaw, General Sokrates Starynkiewicz, to the position of senior city engineer and head of the municipal construction department, where he worked from 1889 to 1909. During this period, he paved the streets which were worn or damaged by sewerage works with wooden blocks and covered the sidewalks with concrete slabs. He designed the first slip road in the Kingdom of Poland in the form of a spiral, and he also participated in the construction of the oldest road engineering structures made of reinforced concrete, located in Ujazdowski Park and on Karowa street in Warsaw, the first Warsaw power plant and the second city bridge across the Vistula. In addition to his professional activity, Kajetan Mościcki was an inventor in the fields of mechanics and electrical engineering. At the end of his life, he founded an award that the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences was to grant to Polish scientists for outstanding achievements.

This study is a product of the author’s interest in the history of Ciechanów streets. Beginning with their inception, origin, and name changes, through spatial development, as well as the presentation of types of buildings standing next to them in different historical periods (residential houses, public utility buildings, industrial plants). The history of the streets also includes the biographies of Ciechanów townspeople, including the owners of individual plots of land and information about their other users.

Niniejsze opracowanie jest efektem zainteresowań autorki historią ciechanowskich ulic. Począwszy od ich powstania, pochodzenia i zmiany nazw, poprzez rozwój przestrzenny, a także prezentację rodzajów budowli stojących przy nich w różnych okresach historycznych (domy mieszkalne, obiekty użyteczności publicznej, zakłady przemysłowe). W historie ulic wpisują się też biogramy ciechanowskich mieszczan, w tym właścicieli poszczególnych parceli miejskich oraz informacje o innych ich użytkownikach.

Irmela von der Lühe, BUDDENBROOKS AT THE BLACK SEA. VLADIMIR JABOTINSKYS ODESSA-NOVEL THE FIVE. “PORÓWNANIA” 1 (24), 2019. Vol. XXIV, P. 123-133. ISSN 1733-165X. When Jabotinksys novel first appeared in Germany (2012) it was celebrated as a spectacular literary event. Jobtinsky’s Jewish family novel is situated in the decades before the revolution of 1905; it deals with revolutionary hope and disappointment, with Jewish assimiliation and the idea of a new liberal and tolerant world. It ends with a complete decline of these visions into brutal antimodernism. This article describes special narrative strategies in producing spaces of memory as streets, places and special public locations. Thereby political events appear as analogies to theater plays and also in a symbolistic framework. By this Jabotinskys novel has become a controversial space of memory not only for political but also literary reasons.

Vladimir Jabotinskys Roman Die Fünf ist bei seinem Erscheinen in Deutschland (2012) als eine literarische Entdeckung gefeiert worden. In der Familiengeschichte der Milgroms aus dem Odessa der Jahre vor der Revolution von 1905 spiegeln sich Hoffnungen und Enttäuschungen der Revolution und der jüdischen Assimiliation, des Aufbruchs in eine neue Welt der Moderne und des Absturzes in eine Welt der brutalen Antimoderne. Der Beitrag untersucht die besonderen literarischen Strategien einer Arbeit an der Erinnerung: des Erzählens von Straßen, Plätzen und Räumen, der Analogisierung des politischen Geschehens mit einem Bühnengeschehen, der symbolistischen Überhöhung der Realität durch Rückgriff auf literarische Texte. Nichtnur aus politischen, auch aus erzählerischen Gründen wird Odessa in Jabotinkskys Roman also zu einem umstrittenen Erinnerungsort.
