The aim of the article is to present a number of methodological conclusions drawn in the course of research on social stigmatization. The Author discusses the methodology of a social experiment involving the use of photographs as part of open interviews and focus group study. The photographs of people had been selected according to a pre-determined set of criteria and were used to elicit responses shedding light on how the subjects associated a person’s physical appearance with an alleged propensity for committing crimes. The use of photographic material made it possible to discover the real views of the subjects – often contrary to those they claimed to hold prior to seeing the visual materials. One may therefore assume that within the strictly controlled conditions of the experiment, iconography played an important role in demystifying stigmatizing behaviour. The goal of the experiment was to determine factors and processes that are normally hidden and which, although natural and part of our observation spectrum, for obvious reasons are subjected to political correctness and usually not voluntarily revealed. The rules of social co-existence require us to obey certain norms and often to conceal what we really think and act upon. This does not mean that the said factors are insignificant. In my view, they are often decisive and lead to cognitive dissonance whenever our beliefs and actions diverge. In the case of the said experiment, a discrepancy was observed between the attitudes of the subjects before and after they were confronted with the photographs. They exhibited more spontaneous behaviour and statements, there was also a change in their opinions and they produced all sorts of evidence and examples which in their view supported their newly revealed ideas. Studies of open interview and focus group techniques lead to the conclusion that visual materials can add to these techniques, making them more ‘friendly’ and balancing the asymmetrical relationship between subject and researcher while also making it easier to extract information subject to social taboos. In the study under discussion, the photographs were a catalyst in getting the subjects to reveal opinions they had previously largely concealed. Yet it must be borne in mind that the experiment requires a careful selection of appropriate photographs so that the subjects do not form new opinions but only reveal those already held yet not expressed. Otherwise these types of studies will not shed light on existing phenomena but rather create new ones, which leaves an ethical question mark when it comes to the purpose of such studies. It is worth adding that the experiment corresponds to various processes occurring in our world, including various ethnocentric and xenophobic movements, today on the rise. The logic behind the experiment seems universal enough to allow its application in studying the perception of other social groups at risk of marginalization and stigmatization. I am thinking particularly of the great migrations of today which are changing the ethnic face of Europe.
The conception of the article is based on stigma theory by E. Goffmann. The process of stig- matization concerns the people, who are socially defined as different from the other members of the society. Stereotypical attitudes may cause that disabled people are perceived as physically inattrac- tive, helpless, weak and ill. These people are forced by society to accept and fulfil a definite nega- tive role and also to give up fulfilling of normal social roles. Disabled people face different forms of stigmatization, that occurs within family, institutions and community. Moreover – the direction of their socialization and social reactions to disability are the most important for shaping up the identi- ty of disabled people.
Objęto nimi 510 osadzonych, mężczyzn, odbywających karę w różnych typach i rodzajach zakładów karnych.

The article presents the study on the sense of marginality among convicts who serve their prison sentence. The research sample has included 510 male prisoners serving their sentence in penal institutions of various types and kinds. It has been assumed that social exclusion caused by imprisonment induce in convicts, among all, the sense of marginality. The aim of the research project was to determine the degree of such sense of marginality and the extent to which external factors brought by the specific punishment execution system and the degree of the convict’s demoralization influence such sense of marginality. The analysis covered five variables: type and kind of penal institution, system of sentence serving, involvement in prison subculture and the nature of committed crimes.
Za jej pośrednictwem pokazuję mechanizmy stygmatyzacji i możliwe konsekwencje mocnej argumentacji przeciwników in vitro.
The subject of study and analysis is formulating an evaluation of Electronic Supervision System by convicts. As a tool author’s Questionnaire of Electronic Supervision System Evaluation was used which contained scale of lie. Frame of mind was also controlled. To verify hypothesis formulation methods diagnostic sounding and statistical and comparative analysis were used. Factor analysis demonstrated that perception of Electronic Supervision System doesn’t bring a unitary opinion-opinions of ESS are incoherent in which we can single out three factors : Negative evaluations, Positive evaluations and Stigmatization. It turned out that “non flashing” prisoners have much more negative evaluation results of ESS than “flashing” prisoners. There weren’t any significant differences in terms of positive evaluations and perceptible Stigmatization between ‘flashing” and “non flashing’ groups.

A zatem proces reintegracji będzie zmierzał do destygmatyzacji jednostki. Zasłużona stygma to uznanie swojej winy.

After completing the rehabilitation process in a closed institution, the individual is released. Social reintegration is nothing more than just the process of overcoming the ensuing oppressive situation. The individual expects help and change in their existing situation, and when these are not the case there appears humiliation which transforms into trauma. The latter can change into polytrauma and then a person com¬mit s acts against their own will, harm¬ing themselves. Social reintegration is an individualized process whereby an individual has a chance to me et a specialist who can neutralize difficult states and situations. It is a matter of time whether or not the person in the specialist’s care will respond with their humiliation to integration rationaliza¬tion. The question is if an individual will settle for being socially marginalized, underpriviliged and pauperized, or – by rejecting these states of identity - will turn them into socially accepted behaviour. Thus, what is meant here is per¬sonal traits which are essential for the role of reintegration process perform¬er – on the one hand as a protector, educator and helper, and on the other one – as an expert and advisor. When establishing normative law and an in¬stitutional system, what must be de¬veloped is such solutions which would allow probation officers to perform the above functions. Consequently, the prabation officer, counselor or social therapist, as reintegration experts with appropriate skills and techniques, are able to bring about a temporal and interpersonal change in an individual. A new image and lifestyle of the person undergoing therapy will be shaped through the strategy of destigmatisation and overcoming stress, i.e. getting out of an oppressive situation. This is a methodical, targeted and organized process, which has specific phases: successful institutional rehabilitation followed by rehabilitation in the open system. Its aim is to prepare an in¬dividual to change their former image and lifestyle through developing rel¬evant competencies, knowledge, selfassessment and motivation. Given the above, there should be developed individual rehabilitation programmes, Le. offers of change. The word “offer” im¬plies that one person proposes changes, and the other participates in the process by jointly determining aims and tasks which can result in the programme implementation. In order for an offer to bring about a real change in an individual’s behaviour, there must be provided proper means and tools necessary to accomplish direct and indirect services of a formative and therapist nature. This can be don e by means of original rehabilitation offers. What is necessary on the part of the community, however, is a network of institutionalized specialist services as a response to honesty, diligence and usefulness, i.e. axiological paradigm of social identity which is really put into operation.
The aim of the article is to show beliefs regarding the role of the state in family policy in the context of the fundamental Family 500+ Programme. Based on empirical research carried out in Radom, the author indicates the scale of approval for family support programmes, especially the Family 500+ Programme and its axiological roots. The Family 500+ Programme changed the beliefs regarding the role of the state in family policy. There is a shift away from neo-liberal rhetoric and the conviction that the state has a duty to support citizens in the social sphere, especially family policy. Of all the forms of support offered, the Family 500+ Programme is the most valued form of supporting families due to its universal, non-stigmatizing character.

The article presents the role of stigma in the context of criminal social adaptation. It shows the theory of stigmatization and social mechanisms of marking. It also presents the stereotypical image of the criminals and the problem of changing social attitudes to prisoners, which is a prerequisite for the success of their social adaptation after leaving the penitentiary institutions.

Teza. Wyniki i wnioski.

Thesis. A person experiencing a mental illness has knowledge gained from their own experience, which can be used as a resource to help others and strengthen themselves. Concepts discussed. Increasingly, people have experiences related to mental illness and its psychological and social consequences. Nevertheless, society still presents a mostly negative attitude towards people experiencing mental health problems. An important problem is also the stigmatization of this group and its effects. Experiencing mental illness, however, is associated with the acquisition of personal knowledge, which can be used to help, for example, other people who are ill. Such a possibility is provided by participation in self-help groups for mentally ill people. These groups support the recovery process, and they can also empower the individual and allow them to counteract the negative effects of the illness and use the personal potential and experience of their own recovery process. Results and conclusions. Activities based on a person’s own knowledge gained during the mental illness experience make it possible to take advantage of the difficult situation connected with the disease. Originality. Mental illnesses and their consequences are an important problem, their effects affect individuals and the whole of society. The subject of self-help groups of people suffering from mental illness is still developing on the Polish science.
The article, basing on researches, shows how, multidimensional stigmatization has an impact on the process of recovery for mentally ill persons. There is presented the social view of the mentally ill persons and its impact on auto-stigmatization of the patients. There is also described the complex situation of the families of mentally ill persons and the meaning of the “society network” in the recovery process. All these, in the context of responsibilities and possibilities of local (parish) and particular community (diocese) of the Church. Thanks to the stable (theologically, socially and economically) structures of its community, the Church significantly can enrich and stabilize the network of society of the mentally ill patients, what is very important in the process of their recovery and has fundamental impact for their welfare.

Przedstawiono złożoną sytuację rodzin chorych psychicznie i znaczenie sieci społecznej w procesie zdrowienia. Wszystko w kontekście zadań i możliwości wspólnoty lokalnej (parafia) i partykularnej (diecezje) Kościoła.
The processes of social stigmatisation and marginalisation of former convicts form a serious obstacle to their social re-adaptation, The effects achieved as part of penitentiary resocialisation while serving a prison sentence are insufficient for them to become independent in free society, combined with the reaction of social reluctance and rejection. The purpose of this article is to present the role of institutionalised post-penitentiary assistance in counteracting social stigmatisation and marginalisation of former convicts. The article explains the notion of social stigmatisation and marginalisation, the meaning of resocialisation activities within the context of preparing an convict for releasing him/her from a correctional facility, as well as the scope and forms of post-penitentiary assistance. For the purposes of explaining stigmatisation, the author used theories of social stigma.

W artykule wyjaśnione zostało pojęcie stygmatyzacji i marginalizacji społecznej, znaczenie oddziaływań resocjalizacyjnych w kontekście przygotowania skazanego do zwolnienia z zakładu karnego oraz zakres i formy pomocy postpenitencjarnej.
Drawing on heteronormativity and hegemonic masculinity, this paper seeks to unravel the issue of the underreporting of male rape to the police and to the third sector. Critically examining the issue of male sexual victimisation will provide a fuller understanding of it within the police and third sector context. Underpinned by gender theories and concepts and the framework of heteronormativity, I argue that male victims of rape are reticent to engage with the police and voluntary agency practitioners because of hostile, sexist and homophobic reactions, attitudes, and appraisal, particularly from other men in these agencies within England to police masculinities and sexualities. I draw on primary data of police officers and voluntary agency practitioners (n = 70) to illustrate the ways wherein gender and sexualities norms and beliefs affect and shape their understanding and view of men as victims of rape. The data suggests that, when male rape victims report their rape, they are susceptible to a ‘fag discourse’, whereby the police and voluntary agency practitioners are likely to perpetuate language to suggest that the victims are not ‘real’ men, intensifying their reluctance to report and to engage with the criminal justice system. Thus, the police and voluntary agency practitioners’, particularly male workers, masculinities are strengthened through emasculating male rape victims.
The self-perception of people with disabilities often differs from how they are perceived by others in the community. The roles of these persons and their relationships in the society are often defined by others in a completely different way (than the way they view themselves) by assigning a specific identity to them. Disability becomes a central category which defines the social identity of these people. Difference between the transactional and true identity of the person disrupts interaction and constitutes a space in which it is possible to stigmatize/mark. In this context, a very important question appears regarding how and whether the person with acquired disabilities adapts to an expected social identity? Has the ego identity status been changed and if so, to what extent? To what extent is ego identity connected with the stigma and other scopes of the personal identity?
Street children worldwide and in Poland face many problems. One of them is educational exclusion which marginalizes this group of children and adolescents in the area of education. The aim of the article is to analyze factors conducive to this particular form of social exclusion. Street workers from Kraków who took part in the study listed three following problem areas in this respect: 1) dysfunctionality of school (teachers’ lack of knowledge about students who fall into the category of street children, their focusing on the curriculum without paying attention to weak students and disregarding the principle of approachability in teaching), 2) teachers - street children relations (stigmatization of students from dysfunctional families, overuse of failing grades, ridiculing and humiliating), and 3) peers - street children relations (violence, quarrels, conflicts).

Streetworkerzy z Krakowa wśród których przeprowadzono badania w swoich opiniach wyszczególnili trzy obszary: 1) dysfunkcjonalność szkoły (brak wiedzy o uczniach-dzieciach ulicy, realizacja programu nauczania z pominięciem słabszego ucznia, zaniedbywanie zasady przystępności w nauczaniu); 2) relacja nauczyciel-dzieci ulicy (stygmatyzacja uczniów z rodzin dysfunkcyjnych, nieuzasadnione stawianie ocen niedostatecznych, wyśmiewanie i poniżanie) oraz 3) relacja rówieśnicy-dzieci ulicy (przemoc, kłótnie, konflikty rówieśnicze).

What are the issues faced by families of men who serve long-term prison sentences? Does the man’s absence negatively affect the quality of life of the family? How do such families coexist in local communities? Does their social standing remain unchanged? The aim of this study is to provide answers to these questions based on the analysis of the existing research literature. This article critically evaluates the existing studies into how wives and partners cope when their husbands serve long term prison sentences. It also identifies some gaps in the literature and makes recommendations for future research. The authors argue that more research is needed to understand the plight of the families of inmates, especially in the case of long term imprisonment.
The socially maladjusted, especially children and adolescents who attend social rehabilitation institutions, are those who, experience certain emotions. It happens apart from evident developmental deficits that translate into the impairment of their skills and the desire to function properly in the society. The effects of these emotions have a significant impact on selfesteem and the way they think about themselves. Young people who have encountered negativity in their short lives, who have experienced a variety of failure and setbacks, have enormous problems with their own acceptance, and acceptance of reluctant to them (or at least prejudicefree) society. The social rehabilitation process directed to socially maladjusted young people, requires correction of their deficits and through the developmental and socialistic activities, it can help them to understand the world around and learn them how to work in it. The effectiveness of this process also requires the elimination of stereotypes and stigmatization of socially maladjusted, that prevent them from effective returning to the social sphere.

The aim of the author’s research is an analysis of the quality of social attitudes among the groups listed above, assessed from the perspective of the disabled students themselves. The basic concept for the realization of the aim is the phenomenon of stigma, seen in it interactive perspective with the distinction between felt stigma and enacted stigma. This distinction is justified by the research conducted so far and its results which show diversified consequences of both types of stigma for the psychosocial functioning of disabled individuals. In the author’s research conducted with students with different degrees of disability, questionnaires created by the author were used which allows to determine the level of perceived behaviour and reactions towards disabled individuals and one’s own self (as a disabled individual), and also to determine their source. The questionnaire about personal experiences related to disability also allows to obtain information about reactions and behaviours of the examined individual in relation to these experiences.

W przypadku osobistego odniesienia dokonywanych ocen stworzono możliwość sprawdzenia reakcji towarzyszących im, wzbudzanych u osoby badanej.
