Research on subjective (implicit) theories, similarly to studies on other kinds of beliefs, has a rich tradition in the SLA field. This study presents the results of a survey conducted among 55 Romance Philology stu-dents, containing open-ended questions about different aspects of the language learning process: nature of the language itself, learner's per-sonal attributes facilitating learning, effective learning activities, optimal learning environment, obstacles to learning, role played by other people. Due to the use of a qualitative methodology (open-ended questions), a large variety of different answers was collected. The data were analysed and divided into subject categories, and the answers falling into each category were counted in order to provide an overall view of the group's tendencies. The students' answers mainly confirm that they see learning a language as a long process demanding time and effort. Students' motivation and perseverance prove to be the most important factors whereas features such as intelligence or language aptitude are underestimated.

The study explores trainee teachers’ opinions on selected aspects of the languageteaching profession. Reflecting on the reasons for becoming a teacher, on a language teacher’s professional qualities, and on the positive and negative aspects of the profession appears to be necessary at the starting point of professional training. A qualitative method was employed to collect the data. The students were asked to answer four survey questions pertaining to the issues mentioned above. Thirty-five undergraduate students completed the survey. Their answers were then analysed, which resulted in suggesting some procedures that could be implemented in the training programme. The findings revealed generally positive attitudes to the language teaching profession. However, some actions should be also taken to eliminate a few subjective theories that could negatively influence the students’ approach, such as the feeling of having power over learners, or controversial ways of dealing with discipline problems in the classroom. The study emphasised the role of reflection in the initial stages of teacher training

The article presents the concept of subjective theories observed in students preparing to be teachers of foreign languages and discusses such theories’ impact on the development of autonomy in a beginning teacher. The verification of subjective theories may be achieved by an in-depth reflection over one’s own teaching skills and tools, which should be cultivated in students from the earliest stage possible. The second part of the article presents the results of a survey conducted among students pursuing a pedagogical practice in French teaching, conducted in order to investigate the role of this teaching experience in the verification of subjective theories and the development of an autonomous attitude.
