Submachine gun, next to classic pistol, is a regular support weapon in an escort team. This type of weapon is issued in the case of elevated level of threat for the protected person. It is used as the main weapon to equip at least one of the protection employees in an escort team. The task of a protection employee equipped with this type of weapon is to “pin down” the assailant(s) and enable evacuation of the protected person from the danger zone to a safe place. In order to allow it, the submachine gun has to meet the criteria, among others those concerning reliability. To put it shortly, it has to be a good submachine gun.

W artykule opisano przypadek, w którym ekspert na podstawie śladów pozostawionych na miejscu zdarzenia w postaci łusek i pocisków nieprawidłowo wytypował model broni, z której zastrzelono trzy osoby. Nieprawidłowy wynik badań eksperta miał wpływ na dalszą pracę służb dochodzeniowo-śledczych. Dopiero skonfrontowanie zeznań świadka z materiałami dowodowymi zabezpieczonymi na miejscu zabójstwa (łuski, pociski) doprowadziło do prawidłowego określenia rodzaju i modelu broni użytej na miejscu zdarzenia. Aby uzyskiwać dokładne wyniki badań, należy analizować szczegółowo wszystkie nawet najdrobniejsze ślady pozostawione na zabezpieczonych dowodach rzeczowych w postaci łusek i pocisków, a także poszczególnych elementach składowych broni. Artykuł obrazuje jak duże znaczenie w procesie wykrywczym mają zeznania świadków, dlatego wskazane jest, by były one udostępniane także ekspertom przeprowadzającym badania z zakresu broni i balistyki. Przedstawiony w artykule przypadek nieprawidłowego wytypowania modelu broni na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań łusek i pocisków nie miałby miejsca, gdyby ekspert dysponował aktami.

The paper presents the case where the expert made a mistake in typing a model of a weapon basing on evidence left on shooting incident scene and comprising of cartridge cases and bullets. Incorrect expert findings had impact on further investigation. The witness testimony combined with crime scene exhibits led to a correct determination of type and model of firearm used to commit homicide. In order to obtain accurate examination findings, the expert needs to analyse precisely each, even the slightest, mark left on exhibit, as well as the ones left on weapon components. The paper demonstrates the significance of witness testimony in the detection process and hence it has been recommended that these testimonies should be rendered available also to the firearms and ballistics examiners. The present case of mistyping a model of weapon would not have occurred if expert had had an insight into casefile.
