Sulfur is one of the chemical elements, which is necessary for living organisms. In this work, not only the physical and chemical properties of the element, but also biogenic chemical compounds containing sulfur were described. Next, the role of non-organic (sulfides, sulfates, and tiosulfates) and organic (cysteine and metionine) compounds containing sulfur was characterized. A biosynthesis of L-metionine, L-cysteine, enzymes containing iron-sulfur clusters, biotin, tiamine, liponic acid, coenzyme A, molybdopterin, and S-adenosylmethionine. Finally, the role of bacteria in the sulfur circulation was described.
