This article presents the process of innovation diffusion in the context of Systems Thinking. The Bass diffusion model is built and converted into a computer simulation model with all variables defined in terms of the System Dynamics (stocks and flows). The computer simulation on the Bass' model confirms a typical for real-life innovations behavior. Various initial assumptions and their impact upon the innovation diffusion are tested.

Climate change impacts will affect many important societal sectors, with potential negative consequences for human well-being and livelihoods, however an integrated and systematic measure to assess the state of livelihood conditions in this context is not available. At the same time, human livelihoods and wellbeing are an important part of (social) sustainability. Yet, aspects of human needs and well-being within assessments of sustainability are criticised for being arbitrary and incomplete. This paper presents a systematic approach to assess Adequate Human livelihood conditions for wEll-being And Development (AHEAD) on a regional to global scale. Based on an interdisciplinary literature review, we first select a consistent set of elements that allow to describe and quantify well-being and livelihoods. In a second step, we analyze documented associations between the elements to outline climate impact pathways and indirect effects of changes in single system components, using an influence matrix. The novel approach provides an important first step to point towards climate change adaptation measures, which most effectively increase human well-being, while identifying potential unintended side-effects. Even though there are some limitations to assessing well-being and livelihoods on a global scale, a consistent measure of AHEAD is of utmost importance for future sustainability and climate impact analyses.

Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) and occupational safety and health (OSH) are areas of human knowledge and interest that are important to, but relatively independent of, each other. SSM uses the idea of systems to find solutions to complex, poorly defined, so-called soft problems that we face in work environments. The aim of this article was to identify the potential for using systems thinking and SSM methodology in the area of identifying and solving complex health and safety problems. The method used was a semi-systematic literature review aimed at identifying selected determinants of the use of SSM in activities to improve OSH. It was pointed out how important it is for the effectiveness of OSH undertakings to be able to use SSM and systems thinking as a structured and systematic approach to analysing and eliminating occupational safety and health hazards present in the working environment.

Innovations in how a postgraduate course in knowledge management is delivered have generated better learning outcomes and made the course more engaging for learners. Course participant feedback has shown that collaborative active learning is preferred and provides them with richer insights into how knowledge is created and applied to generate innovation and value. The course applies an andragogy approach in which students collaborate in weekly dialogue of their experiences of the content, rather than learn the content itself. The approach combines systems thinking, learning praxis, and active learning to explore the interdependencies between topics and how they impact outcomes in real world situations. This has stimulated students to apply these ideas in their own workplaces.

This paper describes many connections between the wisdom literature of the An-cient Greeks and the work of contemporary scholars, intellectuals and professionals in many fields. Whether or not they use the word nous to refer to the highest power of the human soul, I show that their views converge on the existence of such a power. The paper begins with a brief summary of Greek educational texts, including Greek mythol-ogy, Homer, tragedy, and Plato’s dialogues, showing that they are designed to educate the power of mind (nous). Usually without realizing it, many later schools of thought can be shown to come to conclusions that are consistent with the insights of one school of thought or cultural practice among the Ancient Greeks. Many other ancient cultures also had a holistic view of the cosmos, the human soul, and the best human life.

The article addresses the questions of possibilities and conditions of integrating systems thinking and design thinking as a promising approach to solving local problems of safety and public order. It presents the assumptions and expectations concerning the use of a systems thinking approach as well as the attributes and possibilities of design thinking in designing solutions which improve safety. It proposes a methodical approach that integrates these two ways of thinking in terms of their suitability for solving safety problems.

W artykule poruszono temat możliwości i uwarunkowania integrowania myślenia systemowego i projektowego jako obiecującego podejścia do rozwiązywania lokalnych problemów bezpieczeństwa i porządku publicznego (BiPP). Przedstawiono założenia i oczekiwania dotyczące wykorzystania myślenia i podejścia systemowego oraz atrybutów i możliwości myślenia projektowego w projektowaniu rozwiązań poprawiających bezpieczeństwo. Zaproponowano metodyczne podejście integrujące te dwa sposoby myślenia w kontekście ich przydatności do rozwiązywania problemów bezpieczeństwa.
