The article attempts to look at the nativity play in a genological context. The author’s aim is to broaden the context of reading this form of the show. It represents a polemical position towards the unambiguous linking of the nativity play withfolk culture. Instead, he suggests looking at it in the context of such forms as literary mimes, mysteries, comedy dell’arte and some mass spectacles. The consequence ofthis type of considerations is noticing the characteristic, according to the author, tension between the mystery and the farce, sacrum and profanum.

The article is focused on Lucjan Rydel as the author of Polish Bethlehem – a nativity play in which its author saw the most perfect form of folk theatre, a concept he himself keenly propagated. The central issue here is an attempt to observe how Rydel, drawing upon the history of nativity plays as well as their traditional text and character, created a sublime patriotic spectacle which later became a template for all subsequent literary nativity plays inspiriting Polish history and at the same time commenting on current affairs. Furthermore, the text presents Polish Bethlehem through the prism of modernist artists’ interest in the nativity scene as a literary genre and juxtaposes Rydel’s work with the nativity plays written by the Green Balloon Cabaret in order to show two significant directions in which this cultural phenomenon was evolving at the turn of the 20th century.

In the 18th century, a number of puppet figures began to gain popularity. They appeared on the traveling scenes of theatre troupes almost throughout Europe. They were comic figures of the character of popular heroes, presented in the streets, squares and markets and speaking to audience in their own language. One part of them came from the comedy dell’arte (Pulcinella, Poliszynel, Guignol, Don Cristobal, and Pietruszka). The theatrical roots of the heroes who appeared in German states (Hanswurst, Kasperle, Kašparek, Gašparko) reached the Elizabethan theatre and are associated with the presence of wandering theatre troups of English actors. They combined Elizabethan theatre with traditional figure of a folk jester. Because for Poland it is a time of slow loss of independence for the benefit of neighboring countries, the theatre of the popular hero was not created. Instead, the form of szopka (a nativity play) was developing. Comparison of the functions and significance of these theatrical phenomena is the subject of this study. It is also an attempt to draw the attention of educators to the educational values of the Polish nativity play.
