ABSTRACT   Numerous studies (e.g. Lipińska, 2014; Majer, 2002; Nowacka, 2003; Sobkowiak, 2002; Szpyra-Kozłowska, et al., 2002; Szpyra-Kozłowska, 2008; Waniek-Klimczak, 2002; Wrembel, 2002) have shown that although teaching L2 pronunciation is included in university curricula, it is at the same time virtually absent at lower stages of education. Moreover, it has been noticed that teaching phonetics to younger learners is advisable and may be really effective (e.g. Lipińska, in press a; Nixon and Tomlinson, 2005). Undoubtedly, one can say that there are a lot of books and courses designed for adults written by and for Polish learners of English (e.g. Porzuczek et al., 2013; Sawala et al., 2011) or dedicated to international users (e.g. Baker, 2006; Hancock, 2008; Hewings, 2010). But the materials and methods used while working with adult learners and university students are no longer applicable if one wants to teach phonetics in a different environment and create an attractive and efficient course for children or young teenagers, since, as e.g. Komorowska (2011) notices, each foreign language course has to be characterised by realistic goals and appropriate methods and components. The aim of this paper is to present various methods and materials which can be successfully applied while teaching English pronunciation to 11-13-year-olds. They have been used in three groups consisting of such L2 learners, and their usefulness and effectiveness have been proven by studies on both speech production and perception (e.g. Lipińska, in press b).

The recent decision of the Polish Ministry of National Education to make specialized language a compulsory part of vocational training sets the context of this argument. Teachers of professional secondary schools will now face new methodological challenges, so it is important to give them appropriate tools to address these. This paper examines the best known models of genre analysis used in the study of LSP : Bhatia (1993); Askehave and Swales (2000), and the Analyse Différentielle des Discours: Mourlhon-Dallies (2008), reflecting on the possibilities of their practical use in the teaching of LSP.

The aim of the paper is to discuss the role of coursebook evaluation in foreign language education. Coursebooks are presented as the most common learning materials used in institutionalized education. First, the way coursebooks can enhance or inhibit the process of foreign language teaching and learning is addressed. Then, several types of coursebook evaluation are analyzed, along with various roles that coursebook evaluation can play in foreign language education. To emphasise the importance of evaluating coursebooks, a selection of checklists applied in the process of coursebook evaluation is discussed. The author of the paper draws on her experience as a co-author of foreign language coursebooks used in Polish secondary schools, a reviewer of coursebooks employed by the Polish Ministry of Education and a foreign language teacher trainer.

Dotychczas podręcznik i książka szkolna były pojęciami właściwie tożsamymi, stosowanymi wymiennie.

The development of the theory and practice of textbooks is inextricably linked with the development of the theory of school books, the theory of the technical means of teaching and with media education. The development of these three areas of specific pedagogical theory has clearly the Polish identity and direction of research. The study assumes the superiority of the concept of school books (in relation to the text books) as a publication intended for the school. So far, textbook and school book were virtually identical terms, used interchangeably.

This study investigates the position, content and pedagogy of Landeskunde in proficiency skills-focussed Dutch foreign language teaching. It analyses the course book used most frequently in Dutch secondary education for German as a foreign language: Neue Kontakte. This research examines the position of cultural content in course materials and in explicitly formulated learning goals. Moreover, it is investigated what cultural content is introduced and whether this is either integrated in language proficiency training and connected to the world of the learners. The results show that Neue Kontakte offers a broad range of cultural topics which are either linked to the Netherlands or Dutch or to the learners’ personal environment. Additionally, Landeskunde is integrated in language proficiency exercises. On the other hand, its status is considered weak; no cultural learning goals are formulated and hardly any repetition of cultural content and little critical reflection on the foreign and the own culture are observed.

The objective of the article is to analyse some selected materials for teaching English as a foreign language, designed mainly for grade 1–3 of the primary school, with the goal to answer the question whether these materials could be also used successfully and efficiently with 3–5-year old children. Early English learning materials are compared with Polish integrated learning materials. The analysis results in some conclusions for the didactic process in kindergartens. In accordance with the theoretical issues some principles for the shaping of didactic materials, teaching forms and activities, adequate tasks and contents of a language lesson are described.

The article is a presentation of the teaching materials which were one of the key elements for the preparation and implementation of the training module under the project: “Implementation of the educational programme »Politics – Religion – Security. Conflicts and attempts to resolve them« basing on international cooperation.” This publication is made up of the following parts: presentation of the main assumptions of the project; presentation of entities involved in the implementation of the project; description of ideas underlying the project and its objectives (“Issues”); discussion of the contents of twelve sets of teaching materials (textbooks) and academic documents (syllabuses) developed by project promoters. The educational program prepared by the authors has been dedicated to Polish students – project participants. The project has been aimed at preparing its participants for their future roles as employees or employers effectively functioning in the religiously and culturally diversified labour market. Having this objective in mind, twelve sets of teaching materials have been profiled, which address issues covering the time space from the Antiquity until the present. These issues are linked with: biblical texts; ancient Greek philosophy and tragedy; the legal and political situation of first Christians; the Church at the late Antiquity; the medieval project of uniting Europe; modern times and ideologies; modern sources of totalitarianism; the religious dimension of political ideologies; relations between the Church and nationalists; contemporary Catholic social teaching.

The 13th volume of the Aussiger Beiträge magazine entitled “German as a foreign language - educational and linguistic perspectives” is devoted to the current problems of language teaching from a linguistic and practical perspective. It contains 12 articles, 7 reviews and 5 reports. The articles cover a wide range of language teaching problems at school and university: objectives of language teaching, methodological and content-related innovations, application of new media, current teaching plans and materials, grammatical competence and others. The volume discusses various questions: What potential is there in texts from children’s and youth magazines? What should be taken into account when selecting texts that are geared towards the target group? Are there linguistic learning objectives to which too little attention has been paid so far? How could the connection between language and culture be accentuated more clearly? How can foreign language didactics benefit from the new media possibilities? What consequences result from the ‘multimedia’ factor for the design of learning materials? To what extent do framework plans, curricula and other documents at European and national level play an important role in setting new accents in foreign language teaching? The volume addresses diverse approaches to the teaching and practice of German as a foreign language and addresses both established trends in foreign language didactics as well as innovations and changes. A critical view of selected documents and teaching materials as well as developments and trends in foreign language didactics provides suggestions for a scientifically sound and at the same time practice-oriented discussion about the teaching of German. The articles are recommended for all teachers of German as a foreign language who are concerned with the optimization of foreign language teaching. The review briefly summarises the aims and content of each article.

Recently, interest in doctoral studies picked up in general, including among German studies students. As a result, the demand for teaching materials for doctoral students has increased. My own interest in third-level study has prompted me to undertake an analysis of certain teaching resources suitable for doctoral students. The aim of the research was to analyze one of the available, recently published textbooks for PhD students in order to review this publication from a didactic and content point of view. “Lehrmaterialien für Germanistik-Doktorandenkurse” (2021) is one of the most recent publications, which is why it is the subject of the review. It also stands out from other books for doctoral students in German studies, as it is the result of international cooperation between three universities from Poland, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. It is aimed at anyone interested in doctoral courses of German studies, regardless of their home country. Is the book able to simultaneously meet the needs of lecturers and doctoral students of German studies from different academic disciplines (literature, linguistic and cultural studies)? The results of the analysis show that the production of such thematically comprehensive book is feasible thanks to international cooperation. After the analysis, it can be concluded that this is a work that is useful for students of German studies regardless of their specialization.

The aim of the article is to present the methodology of using case studies in teaching business English to upper-intermediate and advanced students. In the first part it gives a brief history of case studies, then it presents the structure and the basic parts of a mini-case. The last part deals with the methodology of using cases in a business English class. It stresses the significance of case studies in teaching the four language skills. It also recommends the case study method for teaching business and management skills such as analysing facts and figures, presenting the case, giving opinions, negotia- ting and chairing a discussion. The case study method can also be helpful when dealing with cross- cultural issues in a business English course. Case studies are valuable ESP materials with a great teaching potential. They may be challen- ging for both students and teachers. They are effective in teaching the productive language skills of speaking and writing. In addition, they practise content-and-language integrated learning (CLIL) and prepare students to perform successfully in their future business roles.

The article deals with the legal aspects of the interpreters’/translators’ activities that are part of the translator’s/interpreter’s professional competence and are to become a mandatory component of professional training. The previous research showed a low level of students’ knowledge in legal norms governing the interpreters’/translators’ work and this may have a very negative effect on the professional work. The article investigates translator’s copyright, translators’/interpreters’ right protection and trade unions, translator’s/interpreter’s criminal liability, professional standards of interpretation and translation. The list of Ukrainian laws and Ukrainian and international standards governing the work of translators/interpreters is provided which is of essential importance for students majoring in translation/interpretation. One of the main legal aspects in translation is copyright which is a judicial instrument codified in many nations’ laws that extends copyright protection to the translation of works. So long as the work exists in some tangible form, copyright protections automatically attach. When a copyrighted work is translated into another language, a new work emerges that carries with it its own set of copyright privileges, known as translation copyright. Another emphasis is made on the Ukrainian Translators Association intended to unite translators and interpreters of Ukraine and about the existence and functions of which students are unaware. This organization sets professional standards and provides rules of professional behavior for Ukrainian translators/interpreters which students majoring in translation/interpretation must be aware of. The organization also provides the possibility of becoming a certified translator/interpreter. Translators’ and interpreters’ mistakes and deliberate misconduct can result in criminal liability. That’s why in case if the translator/interpreter is not sure it’s better to reject to translate/interpret as grounded refusal doesn’t involve any liability. Mastering all these legal aspects of the translator/interpreter activity is of a vital importance that’s why it is argued in the article that they are to be included into the professional training. The author grounds the necessity of creating special teaching materials on the basis of the chosen information and their consequent experimental testing.

To właśnie wtedy świat ujrzał inne oblicze Korei.

A keen interest in the culture and economic development of the Republic of Korea has resulted in establishing business relations between Korea and various countries all around the world. The Korean War (1950-1953) is said to be the catalyst for Korean Studies, since it has generated a considerable interest in Korean history, language and culture. Yet, when the Korean Language Education (henceforward KLE) is being referred to, usually the years when the boom for "everything that is Korean” started, which could be attributed to the successfully organized Summer Olympics in 1988 and co-organized Asian World Cup in 2002, are being mentioned. This was when the world saw a different side of Korea. However, also thanks to the enormous popularity of Hallyu and the support of the South Korean Government given to initiatives, which among others, popularize the Korean language, the interest in various aspects of Korean culture as well as the language itself, has become higher than ever before. Since the turn of the 21st century, South Korea is perceived as one of the world's leading exporters of culture and tourism, and Hangeul became one of the exported goods. The aim of this research is to analyze the situation of KLE in the era of globalization, which along with the spread of lingua franca, among them English, is endangering the language variety of the world. In order to do so, several significant dates and initiatives showing how Korean scholars and the Government have influenced and shaped the language policy and thus have contributed to the popularization of the language all around the world will also be referred to. Government sponsored institutions providing Korean language classes, as well as books and other teaching materials, will be discussed and classified. The article will also try to answer the question concerning the future of the KLE.

At the end of the last century, as part of the communicative methodology, there arose the need to adapt foreign language teaching system to the requirements of the changing reality. The Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (2001) presented a new vision of communication and a new approach to the competence of language users: communication is an activity. Thence, the concept of an action-oriented approach originated. This approach proposes a specific way of developing communication skills which involves performing tasks embedded in environmental and situational contexts. The principles of task-based teaching and learning have been penetrating the didactics of Polish as a foreign language for several years. Unfortunately, despite the rather well-developed theoretical base of the activity-oriented and task-based approach, there is still a lack of comprehensive practical materials and textbooks that propagate the assumptions of European language policy in Polish language glottodidactics. This article shows how to apply a task-based approach in teaching practice. The concept of task-based textbooks created at the Jagiellonian University’s Centre for Polish Language and Culture in the World, which is part of the latest trends in contemporary glottodidactics, is presented. The idea behind the textbooks corresponds to the need to teach a living, authentic language, which is primarily a tool for performing various social tasks.

The analysis presented in this paper is part of the on-going discussion concerning the role and forms of teaching Polish word order to foreigners. Our remarks stem from the problems and difficulties we encountered while preparing a textbook designed for teaching word order during PFL lessons. The first part of the article concerns selected methodological and practical issues, such as the relationship between written/spoken language and the linear order of utterances, the meta-language used for describing word order rules, as well as the difficulties connected with interpreting a given linear order as (un)acceptable, neuter or stylistically marked. We have also stressed the impact of linguistic interference on creating certain word order patterns. The second part of the paper provides practical teaching solutions, referring to each of the problems presented above.

Artykuł stanowi głos w dyskusji nad rolą i kształtem procesu nauczania szyku w glottodydaktyce polonistycznej.
