The text discusses the most important issues raised in the monograph: an explanation of the meaning and role of symbolic theology (and the principle of cognitio symbolica, which is a part of it) in the work of Antoni Węgrzynowicz – an eighteenth-century preacher, a Cracow Franciscan, the author of several hundred sermons in Polish and Latin. What is emphasised is the author’s skill in identifying and describing the allegorisation procedures employed at various levels of the text (from the collection-concept, through individual sermons, to selected examples of argumentation). The reviewed publication is assessed as extremely valuable, both for its rich source material, erudition and analytical skills, as well as for its comprehensive coverage of the work of the preacher.

Recenzja dotyczy książki Magdaleny Kuran „Przez zarzuconą subtelną bawełnicę…” – cognitio symbolica w kazaniach reformata Antoniego Węgrzynowicza (źródła, zastosowania, konteksty) (Łódź 2022). Tekst zawiera omówienie najważniejszych zagadnień poruszonych w monografii: wyjaśnienie znaczenia i roli teologii symbolicznej (oraz będącej jej częścią zasady cognitio symbolica) w twórczości Antoniego Węgrzynowicza – osiemnastowiecznego kaznodziei, członka zakonu krakowskich reformatów, autora kilkuset kazań w językach polskim i łacińskim. Podkreśla się umiejętność Autorki w rozpoznawaniu i opisie zastosowanych zabiegów alegoryzacyjnych na różnych poziomach tekstu (koncept całego zbioru, budowa poszczególnych kazań, wybrane przykłady argumentacji). Recenzowana publikacja zostaje oceniona jako niezwykle wartościowa, zarówno ze względu na bogaty materiał źródłowy, erudycję i umiejętności analityczne Autorki, jak i całościowe ujęcie twórczości krakowskiego kaznodziei.

The theological dimension of the name of Jesus is not only a domain of biblical teaching, pa- trology, theology of spirituality or theology of liturgy. It is also a eld for re ection of systematic theology. This study starts with a brief theological analysis of the name of Jesus and states that this is a summary of His earthy mission which is a saving mission to man and the world. Karl Rah- ner’s contribution to contemporary christological re ection is hard to overestimate. His so-called transcendental christology is an attempt to include anthropology into the structure of theology as its integral component. In contrast, narrative theology deals with modern man as the addressee of the Christian message about salvation. It develops particular ways of access by a man, who is not a believer, to the Person and work of Jesus of Nazareth as the true and living Son of God.
