Each kind of scientifi activity needs engaging in some system of values. When the scientist constructs a new theory he must be aware, that at its base lies determined a concept of axiology. In my article I try to answer the question: should the truth be signifiant value for scientists? I think that answer on this question should be not obvious and depend on our philosophical and critical thinking.

Is Truth Perspectival in Science? Viability of Pragmatic Account of Scientific Truth for Mixed-Methods Research

This paper attempts to assess the viability of M. Frápolli’s pragmatic account of scientific truth in the context of moderately pluralistic view of research process. Mixed-methods approach, which embodies the moderately pluralistic view in the social sciences, combines various methods, i.e. quantitative and qualitative, within a single research process in order to cross-validate and integrate the results into a coherent answer to the initial problem. Prima facie the pragmatic account of scientific truth squares well with the pragmatic justification of the mixed-methods approach, addressing the objections on content incommensurability or meaning ambiguities. However, as I argue, the pragmatic account of truth may not be able to significantly contribute to resolve the problem of ‘institutionalized assertion of falsehood’, unless it will accommodate some form of moderately pluralistic view of the research process allowing for cross-validation of tentative assertion of the purported scientific truth.

W artykule podjęto próbę oceny zasadności M. Frápolli pragmatycznej koncepcji prawdy naukowej w kontekście umiarkowanie pluralistycznego ujęcia procesu badawczego. Podejście mieszane, które realizuje to umiarkowanie pluralistyczne stanowisko w naukach społecznych, łączy różne metody, czyli ilościowe i jakościowe, w ramach jednego procesu badawczego w celu walidacji krzyżowej i zintegrowania wyników w spójną odpowiedź na problem badawczy. Prima facie koncepcja pragmatyczna prawd naukowych jest zasadniczo zgodna z pragmatycznym uzasadnieniem podejścia mieszanego. Jednak pragmatyczna koncepcja prawdy nie rozwiązuje problemu „zinstytucjonalizowanej asercji fałszu”, o ile nie przyjmie jakiejś formy umiarkowanie pluralistycznej wizji procesu badawczego, która umożliwia walidację krzyżową asercji rzekomej prawdy naukowej.

Przyczynowa teoria metafory na tle filozofii Donalda Davidsona

Celem artykułu jest analiza, uzasadnienie i wyjaśnienie Donalda Davidsona przyczynowej teorii metafory z punktu widzenia całości jego poglądów filozoficznych. Poglądy te tworzą spójny system obejmujący, poza semantyką i teorią interpretacji, m.in. teorię poznania, teorię działania oraz teorię racjonalności. Proponując przyczynową teorię metafory, Davidson nie odwołał się bezpośrednio do własnej teorii znaczenia, starając się uzasadnić odrzucenie pojęć znaczenia metaforycznego oraz prawdy metaforycznej na gruncie potocznego rozumienia pojęć semantycznych. W artykule argumentuje się, że przyczynowa teoria metafory stanowi uzupełnienie systemu Davidsona, a ponadto że teoria ta ujęta przez pryzmat całego systemu pozwala wyjaśnić rolę metafor nie tylko w literaturze i poezji, lecz także w naukach przyrodniczych, prawie, religii i naukach społecznych.

The aim of the paper is to analyze, clarify and explain Donald Davidson’s causal theory of metaphor form the viewpoint of his philosophical views which constitute coherent philosophical system comprising not only semantics and theory of interpretation, but epistemology, theory of action, and theory of rationality as well. Proposing his own theory of metaphor Davidson did not refer to his philosophy, and justified his rejection of the notions of metaphorical meaning and metaphorical truth on the ground of common, pre-theoretical views on meaning and other semantic notions. I argue that the causal theory of metaphor fits perfectly Davidson’s philosophical system and from the point of view of his system it is easy to explain the role of metaphor not only in literature and poetry, but in sciences, law, religion, and social sciences.
