The Concept of A Slovak-Polish-Russian Dictionary of Linguistic TermsThis article describes in detail the concept of A Slovak-Polish-Russian Dictionary of Linguistic Terms (Slovensko-poľsko-ruský slovník jazykovedných termínov), which was compiled by a team of authors from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Prešov. Three volumes of this translation-explanatory dictionary deal with the terminology of three linguistic levels: phonology, morphology and syntax, and they may be the starting point for other volumes. The paper outlines the state of Slovak-Polish-Russian translation lexicography with regard to linguistic sources, and evaluates the state of processing of Slovak, Polish and Russian linguistic terminology in the form of monolingual encyclopaedias and explanatory dictionaries. It also mentions reference sources the authors drew upon when compiling the dictionary. The article presents motivation for the compilation of a Slovak-Polish-Russian dictionary of linguistic terminology, pointing out the need for such a publication and identifying the spheres of its application. Artykuł przedstawia stan słowacko-polsko-rosyjskiej leksykografii tłumaczeniowej w odniesieniu do kompendiów językoznawczych oraz ocenia stan opracowania słowackiej, polskiej i rosyjskiej terminologii językoznawczej w formie jednojęzycznych leksykonów i słowników wyjaśniających. Omawia również źródła, z których korzystali autorzy podczas opracowywania słownika. Artykuł przedstawia także motywację dla opracowania słowacko-polsko-rosyjskiego słownika terminologii językoznawczej, wskazując na potrzebę takiej publikacji i obszary jej zastosowania.

Compiling special dictionaries in Ukraine and Russia has its own history, national specifics, significant achievements and groundworks. Terminological dictionaries play an important role – they preserve and transmit the scientific terminology fund from generation to generation, which necessitates a critical examination of each specific publication. Terminographic criticism is an integral, interdisciplinary direction which is formed simultaneously on the basis of scientific criticism and scientific communication combining their features. As a result of the study, it was established that modern Ukrainian and Russian critics in their reviews adhere to the same principles to examine terminological dictionaries: the intention to comprehensively analyse, first of all, definition and translation publications as well as reference dictionaries, regarding the representation of their mega-, macro- and microstructure parameters; determining the national and linguacultural values of branch dictionaries. The potential importance of the practical application of the results lies in improving the theoretical and methodological principles and foundations of compiling terminological dictionaries, as well as their use in the development of new models of special publications, in particular dictionaries of a new type, which will comprehensively present the terminology of a certain field of science.

The article describes the psychological and pedagogical peculiarities of teaching higher mathematics to foreign students. The basic methods and forms of work to improve the efficiency of the educational process are identified. These include: preparatory work for learning course, generalization and systematization of educational material, the use of reference abstracts and terminological dictionaries, specific requirements for the content and pace of teacher’s speech, individual and group forms of work at practical exercises. An important factor in foreign students’ training is the maximum use of visual material. We believe that the application of methods of individual and group learning can enhance educational and cognitive activity of students. There are also special requirements to the language: it should be clear, slow and concise. For practical lessons, it is advisable to prepare schemes of solving the basic (standard) tasks. This is the sequence of steps (algorithms) that lead to the result. Learning to solve typical tasks, the student can move on to more complex tasks, i.e. higher levels of learning. Solving tasks takes place with elements of the teacher’s assistance, mutual aid and interpersonal communication. Just interpersonal communication may, in some degree, fill in the gaps in the knowledge of language. If the individual elements of the explanation are not clear because of the language barrier, the student may appeal to the classmate and get his comments in clear language. For the current and final control the most appropriate is the use of tests. These forms of the tests are usual and well-known to foreign students and, very importantly, do not require independent verbal formulations of the answer. However, it is not necessary to abandon completely oral questioning. Oral responses are necessary for the development of speech culture, creating conversations and discussions. Taking into account considered psychological-pedagogical peculiarities, undoubtedly, will have a positive impact on the course of higher mathematics for the foreign students. In terms of further research is the development of new and of existing manuals and other didactic materials in higher mathematics for international students, development of methodological recommendations on the level of differentiation and individualization of instruction.

The article presents the evolution of Polish toponomastic terminology – terms and concepts related to the study of geographical names. The material documenting the development of the terms comes from selected, significant monographs and articles related to the toponymy published after World War II. The developmental tendencies, range of toponomastic terms and their initial hierarchic-thematic system have been presented. The featured analyses showed that contemporary toponomastic terminology is quite stable and not excessively extensive. The terms and concepts developed in recent decades have become more widespread and the operability of newly developed, but also of the widely recognised ones, is subject to continuous verification in scientific communication. The presented considerations constitute another voice in the discussion on the creation of an electronic dictionary of Polish onomastic terminology.

Form, its meaning, and dictionary entriesAs we know, a language form is a unit which plays a specific form in the language, e.g. a semantic or syntactical one. We establish the function of a form based on its use (occurrence), i.e. its relation with the meanings of other forms in speech or in a text. The meaning of a form is the value of its function. In the traditional grammar, form is opposed to its meaning. However, various grammar schools have big problems with distinguishingbetween a form and its function. For example, the present tense form has a number of basic temporal meanings in Bulgarian as well as in Polish and Russian, and in none of those languages this is only the present time, (see past, future and habituality expressed using the present tense form). It is a big mistake not to distinguish between the meanings of article in article languages. For example, in Bulgarian the same form of article canexpress both uniqueness and universality (or, respectively: definiteness and indefiniteness). In the quoted book (Koseska-Toszewa 1982), I put forward a hypothesis on the development of the meaning of Bulgarian article. In my opinion, initially the article expressed uniqueness of an element (object), and then started to express also uniqueness of a set, which later, due to equalling two completely different semantically-logical structures, i.e. structures with universal and unique quantification, lead to a homonymy and to the article expressing also universality, i.e. indefiniteness. Similarly in English, French, Rumanian or Albanian, where the same form of article can express either uniqueness or universality. This proves that the above homonymy is of a general rather than typological (e.g. Balkan) character. Naturally, in the above languages the definite article form can also express uniqueness of an object or a set, so it also expresses definiteness. Ambiguity of the definite article form is a phenomenon exceeding the area of Balkan languages, and the only Balkanism is the position of the article - speaking more precisely, its postpositiveness (postpositive position). However, that position gives us no right to treat it differently than the English or French article. In Bulgarian, Rumanian and Albanian the postpositive article is written together with the name its concerns, but it is neither a unit belonging to the root of the word nor the ending of the word. The above observations, based first of all on the semantically-logical aspects of the definiteness category, have been confirmed by the language material from the Suprasl Code, where Bulgarian article does not occur in universally quantified nominal structures, but in uniquely quantified nominal expressions, denoting satisfaction of the predicate either by one element of the sentence or by the whole set treated as the only one.It is worth stressing that distinguishing between the form and its meaning in comparing the material 6 languages belonging to three different groups of Slavic languages (as is the case in the MONDILEX Project) will allow us to avoid numeorus substantiva mistakes and erroneous conclusions. Hence dictionary entries should be verified and made uniform in that respect before they are “digitalized”... Distinction between the form and its meaning in a dictionary entry is fully possible, as shown by works of Z. Saloni (2002) and A.Przepiórkowski (2008).

A Short History of Polish-Ukrainian TerminographySpecialised dictionaries fulfil a plethora of linguistic and cognitive functions in specialised communication. In particular, such reference works help introduce, harmonise and standardise national terminologies, thus playing an indispensable role in disseminating high quality specialised knowledge. An even more important role may be attributed to bilingual and multilingual specialised dictionaries, whose primary goal is to facilitate the flow of scientific and technical information at an international level. This function has come to the fore in today’s multinational and interconnected professional world. In light of the developing and ever stronger cooperation between Poland and Ukraine, an attempt is being made to evaluate bilingual and multilingual terminographic works containing Polish and Ukrainian which have been published in Poland to date. The aim is to assess the positive developments and to identify the gaps in Polish-Ukrainian terminography. It is hoped that the findings presented in this paper will be applied by terminographers in order to compile terminological dictionaries of higher quality, which satisfy the needs of specific users and follow terminographic principles. Krótka historia terminografii polsko-ukraińskiejSłowniki specjalistyczne pełnią ważne funkcje lingwistyczne i kognitywne w komunikacji specjalistycznej. W szczególności dzieła terminograficzne umożliwiają rozpowszechnianie, harmonizację i standaryzację terminologii narodowych, stając się niezbędnym narzędziem w transferze wysokiej jakości wiedzy specjalistycznej.

The paper deals with the issue of legal vocabulary – legal terms – from the point of view of lawyers and the public. Legal terms, especially multi-word terms, are motivated by a common lexis, but at the same time the legal definition may not conform to the everyday understanding of the words in Slovak. This often leads to the misunderstanding of the text of the law, when an ordinary language user with no legal training, departing from the ordinary meaning of the word in Slovak, understands the content of the legal term incorrectly. The paper also addresses the possible existence of polysemic terminology within one discipline and jurisprudence, and the resulting problems in institutional communication. The specificity of legal terms stems from the oscillation between the public and specialists in the area of law. Explanations of the terms should be a compromise between a text comprehensible for laymen and a definition that does not deform the meaning of the term for lawyers. Achieving harmony between the simplified explanation of the term and its understanding in the legal sense is fundamental for the creation of the Dictionary of Legal Terms for the Public.

Ukrainian scientific astronomical terminology has been rapidly evolving in the late XIX and early XX century due to the publication of scholarly works on astronomy in Ukrainian. During this period, the development of astronomical terminology system, as well as other subsystems of the scientific language was not a normal, natural way of challenging conditions of stateless Ukrainian nation. In the article the author discusses the influence of linguistic and extra-linguistic factors on the creation of the Ukrainian language and national scientific terminology. For example, I present Ukrainian astronomical terminology’s influence on national and international trends in terms of formation and development of astronomical terminological Ukrainian language.

The article discusses basic issues related to Polish anthroponomastic terms, their development and frequency, taking into account the variability of terminological units and the co-existence of native and foreign forms (usually Greek or Latin). It presents problems related to defining a term, determining its scope or (in particular cases) status, indicating preferred, permissible or non-recommend- ed variant forms, selection (reduction) of sub-terms, the existence of doublets with a grammatical number, acceptance or rejection of new terms, etc. In the text, among others, the following sources were used: the dictionary “Osnoven sistem i terminologija na slovenskata onomastika” [“Basic system and terminology of Slavic onomastics”] (1983), an article by Mieczysław Karaś “W sprawie polskiej terminologii onomastycznej” [“On Polish onomastic terminology”] (1968), studies by Henryk Górnowicz (1988) and Ewa Jakus-Borkowa (1987), encyclopedia “Polskie nazwy własne” [“Polish proper names”] (1998), the compendium “Słowiańska onomastyka” [“Slavic onomastics”] (2002–2003) and selected articles published in the journal “Onomastica”.The second part of the article presents the history, scope and definitions of the term ethnonym // ethnic name (based on selected compendia, monographs and contributory studies), paying atten- tion to the types of names it covers. In addition, a preliminary structure of an entry in the terminological dictionary has been outlined, including such elements as: the term, its definition, variability // equivalent term, origin // explanation, its English equivalent, examples // usage, context of use, and additional aspects.

Over three hundred years of study and lexicographic parameterization of the lexical-semantic system of East Slavic languages has led to the emergence of a corpus of industry terminology of historical lexicology and related disciplines (synchronous lexicology, semasiology, etymology, dialectology, historical phonetics and grammar of closely related languages), which, until today, has not been reflected in any terminology dictionary. The article discusses a compiled corpus (1307 units) of historical lexicology terms and proposes ways to incorporate it in the industry terminological dictionary of an alphanumeric type, the compilation of which is based on the use of a system of linguistic methods and techniques, such as a continuous selection of terms and terminological notation from linguistic dictionaries, reference books, encyclopedias and scientific literature; methods of compiling the corpus of industry terminology of historical lexicology of East Slavic languages; the method of semantic analysis of the content of terms and a thematic analysis of the terminological corpus; methods of the development of terminological definitions, etc. The dictionary will consist of two parts: the first is an alphabetical-nested type dictionary, the other is a thematic list of cross-referenced terms. The corpus of terms is divided into 10 thematic groups: the theory of historical lexicology, Slavic languages, the history of East Slavic languages, etymology, lexicology, semasiology, word formation, morphology, dialectology, lexicography. The vocabulary piece in the first part will include the following areas: 1) the headword or terminological combination with accent and variable (synonymous) terms, if any; 2) the necessary grammatical and//or functional labels; 3) a brief etymology of the term; 4) derivatives related to the terminology of historical lexicology with a description of semantics; 5) definition (with reference to a previously published dictionary, if it had not been developed by the author of this dictionary); 6) language illustrations demonstrating the phenomenon named by the relevant term; 7) references to the other body of the vocabulary, i.e. an indication of the thematic group to which a term belongs. As examples, the article covers are two experimental dictionary entries “Achronology //panchronology” and “Root (words).”
