The subject of the author’s research are literary texts of the chronicle type, read as texts rather than as sources of learning historical facts (in the case of historians) or the history of artistic forms (in the case of literature specialists). the author compares two chronicles from the same territory: The Żywiec Chronicles from the Ancient Times to 1845, written by Franciszek Augustin (mid-19th century) and Chronography by Jędrzej Komoniecki (early 18th century), attempting to employ a semiotic approach to interpreting them. the differences between the two analysed accounts result from changes in the reading of the world, which occurred between the early 18th century and the mid-19th century. this is visible for example in the methodology of hierarchizing the importance of facts and “finding” their meaning by the authors of the two chronicles. the 19th--century account largely conforms to the rigours of the genre, with its limitations with regard to poetics, rhetoric, forms, and techniques of presenting events. in Chronography, the limitations imposed by literary conventions are shattered by the force of the narrative, by searching for unusual things, curiositates, marvels, unexplained phenomena and wonders which can be observed at fairs and executions. in Komoniecki’s work, the rigours of the chronicler’s presentation are jumbled with the style of other accounts; poetics – and, most importantly, the related semiotics – intermingle. this is at odds with the style of the 19th-century chronicle, whose attention is focused on facts. On the basis of his observations, the author argues that the main task of a historian of culture should be to attempt to reconstruct “reading” competences, notions and most importantly semiotics, which “rule” perception, sequencing reality, separating, hierarchizing and legitimising “facts.” Consequently, the history of culture becomes also the history of communication, since the analysed texts also need to be seen in broad communication contexts. the author also argues that the reconstruction of the semiotics of both discussed chronicles requires an analysis of their texts as texts and capturing their various narrative strategies, poetics, rhetoric, topic, intertextual tensions resulting e.g. from the presence of elements of oral culture, information and structures of colloquial thinking, quotes and semi-quotes of folklore and scientific knowledge, literary topoi and old beliefs.

The outline addresses the set of songs included in one of the editions of the Toruń cantional by Petrus Artomius (1601). The small extract of the text provided the opportunity to grasp the range and nature of the changes taking places in the Old Polish language when the Polish culture was affected by the Reformation. For this reason, the author attempted to indicate the origin of the works and to trace the edition modifications introduced in the text with particular emphasis on linguistic alterations. In the cantional there appear texts rooted in the Polish Catholic tradition of religious songs (e.g. XVII, XX, XXI, XXVI, XXVII), translations of Protestant carols of Martin Luther known from earlier songbooks (e.g. XXX, XXXII, XXXVI); however, they are often new, modified versions of the songs. In comparison with the first edition of the cantional, the discussed edition was somewhat reorganized, which may be observed in the editor’s attempt to modernize the language of the songs. On the basis of the presented description of philological- stylistic nature one may conclude that the language of the old Protestant community of Toruń did not differ significantly from the Old Polish language of the time. On the one hand, the texts included in the cantional refer to medieval songs stylistically and linguistically. On the other hand, they illustrate the popularity and universality of Polish songs used in religious practices of Protestants, not only Lutherans.

Using the dictionary-based approach to measure the sentiment of finance-related texts is primarily focused on English-speaking content. This is due to the need for domain-specific dictionaries and the primary availability of those in English. Through the contribution of Bannier et al. (2019b), the first finance-related dictionary is available for the German language. Because of the novelty of this dictionary, this paper proposes several reforms and extensions of the original word lists. Additionally, I tested multiple measurements of sentiment. I show that using the edited and extended dictionary to calculate a relative measurement of sentiment, central assumptions regarding textual analysis can be fulfilled and more significant relations between the sentiment of a speech by a CEO at the Annual General Meeting and subsequent abnormal stock returns can be calculated.

The majority of translation theories remerging from the works of contemporary philosophers suffer from a lack of well-organized textual/semiotic analysis tools. Although such theories are specifically important because of their postulates, their incoherent methods normally make them difficult to be used or even sufficiently understood. Hermeneutic theories, however, have been re-visiting and re-constructing their principles, showing a remarkable tendency toward methodological and empirical investigation guided by their philosophy. Translational hermeneutics, as a major movement, has suggested six fundamental principles. Although this contribution systemizes and simplifies hermeneutic conceptions, it still needs to construct a lingual analytic system for practical translation. Seeking to address this problem, this study views the six principles in the light of narratology and suggests a unified organization based on Ricoeur’s narrative theory by breaking the principles into a cognitive-existential dimension (subjectivity, historicity, phenomenology) and a lingual/semiotic dimension (process character, holistic nature, reflection). This framework processes both minimal and maximal language variables and addresses practical and pedagogical considerations.

This study focuses on the postfaces that accompany Karel Čapek’s Writings (published 1980–1995), with an eye to the way they relate to the primary texts. The first part explores the nature of these essays, as well as the topics they address, in relation to Gérard Genette’s theory of paratexts. The author then goes on to examine certain presuppositions in the essays about the experience of reading Čapek’s writings, and how or whether authors of the essays are aware of their role in mediating this experience. In a third and final part of the study, the author examines the demands placed on literature during the period 1948–1989, and how they are reflected in the postfaces.

The present paper presents linguistic analysis of the texts extracted from the ABOUT pages in 24 fashion blogs topping the list of influential fashion blogs in 2018. The fashion blogs under consideration are viewed as belonging to personal style fashion blog type. The present research aims at analyzing the way generic features of this type of discourse are displayed by the texts under consideration. The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) text analysis technique was employed to study the texts in order to explore how consistent they are with social media text type (Twitter, Facebook, blog) according to pre-defined psychological and linguistic categories. LIWC output in relation to each text was interpreted in terms of traditional LIWC dimensions and LIWC variables. The main findings suggest that, linguistically, most texts tend to combine features that are typical of highly personal writing and formal writing intended for official use.

This paper presents results of the literature review from the field of tourism and recreation covering Polish research papers published in the years 2000–2017. The literature review concerns the main issues related to the labour market in tourism economy. This study examines publications in specialist journals, monographs, monograph chapters and a ministerial report on this topic. The aim of the literature review was to establish the evolution of the discussed topics, adopted paradigms and research perspectives. The study was conducted from two points of view, i.e. as a classic textual analysis and as an exploratory analysis performed using Statistica Data Miner software. The analysis indicated that there was a modest but growing number of publications by tourism and recreation specialists and the topics investigated by the researchers were closely related to the changes on the labour market. The subject matter evolved from issues concerning the significance of tourism in boosting demand for labour, the level and structure of demand for specialists in this sector, as well as research focused on the role of employees in efficient operation of tourism enterprises. At the beginning of the 21st century the dominant research trends were based on a positivist paradigm, quantitative structural and functional, as well as economic and spatial analyses. However, these trends were gradually replaced by an interpretative paradigm and humanistic, behavioural, sociological, and interdisciplinary approaches.
