The article focuses on determining the status of potential users (parents and guardians more often than the actual addressees of children’s literature), the circumstances of selecting tanatical literature, as well as the awareness of the circumstances of exposing children to tanatical literature. The author poses questions about whether the parents and guardians of the youngest readers are aware of the importance of these kinds of texts; when, how, and why they choose to use them; what obstacles they encounter and how they seek to overcome them. An important aspect of this research is the attempt to determine the thanatopedagogical competences based on the evaluations, opinions and reviews formulated by the readers and users of literature on dying and death which is primarily addressed to the youngest recipients.

Artykuł uzasadnia potrzebę wzbogacenia programów kształcenia nauczycieli o zajęcia z tanatologii. Autorzy zaprezentowali wymierne korzyści edukacji w tym zakresie dla osobowościowego rozwoju nauczycieli oraz dla efektywności ich pracy pedagogicznej. W opracowaniu wskazano również na wieloaspektową wartość wychowania uczniów do cierpienia, umierania i śmierci.

The article justifies the need of enhancing educational programs for thanatology classes. The authors presented distinct advantages of education in that field for the teachers personal development and the effectiveness of their pedagogical work. The case study also points out at the multipronged worth of upbringing students to suffering, dying and death.

Thanatopedagogical Relational Alternative Therapy is an integral element of the developing thanatopedagogy. It originates in the experience connected with working with terminally ill children and their parents. In the context of this diagnostic and therapeutic tool, in the years 2009–2014 a research, which aimed at recognizing the perception of the fear of death, was conducted in the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine and Italy. The presented part of the studies was conducted in quantitative strategy by authorial tool. The sample was 792 persons form assistance professions.

Tanatopedagogiczna Relacyjna Terapia Zastępcza (TRTZ) jest integralnym elementem rozwijającej się tanatopedagogiki i swoje źródło czerpie z doświadczenia w pracy z dziećmi terminalnie chorymi oraz ich rodzicami. W kontekście powstałego narzędzia diagnostyczno- terapeutycznego, w latach 2009–2014 przeprowadzono w Czechach, Polsce, na Ukrainie i we Włoszech badania, których celem było poznanie percepcji lęku przed śmiercią. Prezentowana część badań została przeprowadzona w strategii ilościowej, narzędziem autorskim na próbie 792 osób reprezentujących zawody pomocowe.

The article presents the issue of thanatopedagogy as a relatively new area of pedagogical research. The main emphasis of the discussion is placed on its philosophical character and the possibilities of supporting contemporary man in overcoming the existential fear of death. Its presence in pedagogy seems to be increasingly necessary because of its lifelong character, the need to confront the fear of death hidden by pop culture, and, above all, the possibility of a spiritual transformation that can take place in the process of education.

Artykuł przedstawia problematykę tanatopedagogiki jako względnie nowego obszaru badań pedagogicznych. Główny akcent rozważań został położony na jej filozoficzny charakter i możliwości wsparcia współczesnego człowieka w przezwyciężaniu lęku egzystencjalnego związanego ze śmiercią. Jej obecność w pedagogice wydaje się coraz bardziej konieczna ze względu na jej całożyciowy charakter, konieczność przeciwstawienia się lękowi przed śmiercią tuszowanemu przez popkulturę, a przede wszystkim ze względu na możliwość przemiany duchowej, która może dokonać się w procesie wychowania.

Poszukując filozofii w literaturze, można ją odnaleźć również i w książkach dla dzieci, szczególnie jeśli dotyczy ona tak poważnych tematów jak śmierć. Autorzy tychże książek, przybliżając filozofię życia oraz sens śmierci, często ukazują je poprzez pryzmat spotkania dziecka i osoby starszej. Co wynika z tych spotkań i jakie inne walory, oprócz kontekstu oswajającego ze śmiercią, można jeszcze odnaleźć w tych literackich spotkaniach? Za punkt odniesienia w pracy została przyjęta filozofia spotkania Andrzeja Nowickiego – inkontrologia.

Philosophy in literature may also be found in children’s books, especially those concerning such serious subjects as death. The authors of these books often introduce the philosophy of life and the meaning of death by showing them through the prism of a meeting of a child and an elderly person. What results from these meetings and what other qualities, apart from the context of familiarizing with death, can be found in these literary meetings? The reference point in the paper is Andrzej Nowicki’s philosophy of a meeting, i.e. incontrology.
