The aim of this paper is to introduce dilemmas and challenges connected with presenting the past and history to thanatourists. For this purpose, we will explain the main features of dark tourism, which deals with the so called difficult/dissonant heritage. This characteristic will help to pay attention to the difficulties with exhibiting dark objects, which, in the course of time, become more and more commercialized. The last problem, raised in this article, is confrontation between tour guides’ narration about history and its perception among tourists representing different cultures. Information derived from non‑directive interview with Cracow tour guides will serve as examples for theoretical reflection.

The article considers the influence of acts of terror and war crimes on both the development of tourism, or a lack of it. Terrorist attacks, the victims of which are tourists as well as local citizens, constrain or completely prevent tourism development. Terrorism is then a barrier to the development of the tourism economy. With time, however, memory of the crime and its victims, due to documentation and commemoration, may become an impulse to organize spaces which will be included in tourism

This paper presents the results of a study of 67 disused Lutheran cemeteries situated in the Pisz and Maskulińskie Forest Divisions (the southern part of Warmińsko-Mazurskie Province). An inventory of gravestones and vegetation was compiled, and the types, sizes and geographical coordinates of the cemeteries were determined using a GPS receiver. The paper also presents an evaluation of the cemeteries, illustrated through examples in the Maskulińskie Forest Division. The best preserved and/or most interesting cemeteries are going to be included on a tourism trail.

The text focuses on the themes relating to a specific type of tourism propagated by scientists as tanathotourism. After the introduction of the subject of journey, tourism and thanatotourism I focus on a selected example – trips to the town of Pripyat, abandoned in 1986, as a result of the explosion in Chernobyl power plant and the subsequent contamination of the area with radioactive elements. The town in the north of Ukraine is now one of the world’s tourist attractions.
