The Lemkos are an antagonized internally ethnic minority. The beginning of the division dates back to midnineteenth century, when almost simultaneously began to form the Ukrainian national identity and the Lemko separatism. It is also explicitly on the basis of the Lemko organizations created on the wave of democratic changes in Poland. Using of virtual ethnography methodology to analyze the content of websites of three of them: the Lemko Association, the Lemkos Federation and the Association of Ruska Bursa in Gorlice enables to capture significant, not shown explicitly, the differences in outlook, orientation of identity, construction of arguments, embarking strategy, the language used to simultaneous reference to the common universe – the Lemko Land. The Lemko Federation promoting Ukrainian national identity and the Lemko identity is recognized in terms of the regional identity. Two other one associate people with Lemko identity, emphasizing membership to the group of Carpatho-Rusyns. In their e-transmission they show a background of internal conflicts, formulate evaluative judgments and reveal strong emotions.

Ethnic policy towards the “non-Polish” population, in particular considering the ethnic group of the Lemkos in the period of the Second Republic of Poland was characterised by two concepts of assimilation: ethnic and national. Undoubtedly, one figure who distinguished himself in the process of creating policy towards the Lemkos was W. Wielhorski, who effectuated clear and complete examination of the Lemkos issue in the Second Republic of Poland. Any operations undertaken by Polish authorities aimed at gaining loyalty of the Lemkos population as well as at conferring autonomy in order to maintain their ethnic or cultural distinctiveness. The twilight of the 1930s saw a change in the government’s orientation towards the “non-Polish” population which was expressed in a military, nationalistic way of leading the ethnic policy.

The total, two-stage resettlement of the Lemkos in 1945–46 and 1947 was the point of departure for their migration/diaspora identity. Consequently, the settled, native community that had established its identity upon a territorial determinant became a community dispersed over several diaspora territories. Therefore, a crucial identity reinvention had to take place, constructed upon the migration determinant. The purpose of this paper is to capture the essence of the reinventive myth of a ritual dimension-the cyclic rituals of traveling between the lands of expulsion and the Carpathian motherland, and the textual dimension-providing meaning and symbolic value to these treks. The empirical, material basis for the research is provided by cultural texts, mainly Lemko writings from recent decades, as well as data from participant observation and field studies carried out by the author in 2017 in three areas currently inhabited by the Lemkos and considerably distant from one another.
