Constructions of the Other in Polish Fantasy Literature

100%

Even though it often follows the heroic cycle of Campbell’s monomyth, because it is exomimetic, fantasy literature lends itself to the presentation of characters who are set apart from society by their nature, not just by their heroic status. These are characters such as wizards, who in fantasy are often elevated from the position of secondary characters they held in fairy tales to the stories’ protagonists. This makes fantasy works a good vessel for a discussion of the problems of otherness. As the genre evolves, the presentation of the Other becomes more complex. In modern works they are often portrayed as the Other on multiple levels. As readers have become more accustomed to Tolkienian wizards, dwarves, or rangers set apart from human society, the protagonists of modern fantasy stories are often made the Other to their own in-groups. The article presents a number of such characters from selected modern Polish fantasy novels and short story cycles.

The main problem is connected with a term of „the Other” as a problem of interdisciplinary and multicultural dialogue. Then this question is considered in the context of selected points of philosophy, culture and education, even in the sphere of art education. My educational and pracitical propositions are understood as results of teaching, scientific research and education activity on the path of multicultural dialogue, also in the sphere of music. It is the way to improve the methods of education into making a dialogue with „the Other”, accepting Him/Her in all complexity and diversity.

The subject of the analyses undertaken in this article is solidarity with the Other in global society. The first part of the article focuses on the status of the Other (the outline is based on the characteristics presented by Claude Lévi-Strauss, George Simmel, Zygmunt Bauman, Bernhard Waldenfels and Emmanuel Lévinas). The subject of the second part is the category of solidarity – its analysis has been made by referring to the sociological and axiological perspective. In the third part, which is a kind of summary, the ambivalence of the status of the Other in the context of globalization is presented.

Many postcolonial readings of fantasy fiction focus on exploring complicated relationships between different fantastic races that inhabit a certain secondary world. However, such studies often overlook interactions of these races with the supernatural animals and beasts that live alongside them. Fantasy narratives like Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher Saga and George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire depict fantastic settings where the relationship between the inhabitants of the world and the supernatural creatures is just as important as the interracial relations because it is based on similar principles of interaction between the Familiar and the Other and can be used to characterize them. Therefore, this article will address the following issues: how the supernatural creatures are perceived in their respective secondary worlds; what attitude prevails in this perception; and why it prevails above other reactions.

The objective of this paper is to show main difficulties in the intercultural translation process which has been taking place during the Discovery and the Conquest of the New World, in the 15th and 16th centuries. These historical facts are considered as a metaphor of translation in general, and letters, chronicles and histories of some Spanish authors of that period are analyzed as examples of interpretation / translation based on their eurocentric and Christian background. Finally, domestication of the New Spain culture is indicated as a main translation strategy and a confrontation of cultures rather than dialogue is stressed as a general feature of the cultural contact.

The Other — the concept “of the most powerful sociological tools for analyzing social processes of individuals and groups confronting new social orders”. Post-colonial theories should be considered in the context of literature, research and language and referred to as the voice of the Other. At the same time, the aftermath of colonialism ought to be taken into account.

Experience of living in borderlands is the most important Upper Silesian experience. Com-plicated geopolitical situation affects on Silesian history, local inhabitants’ identity, specific character of this place (periphery complex, pressure of ideological and cultural centres versus everyday relations with the Other, who often is homely and who is different from stereo-types disseminated by ideological centres are experienced here). Upper Silesia had to – and still has to – struggle with typical borderlands’ problems such as: borders’ inconstancy, feel-ing of homeliness, everyday relations with the Others, extreme ideologization, danger, fear, multiculturalism, other culture’s remains even after a resettlements and emigrations. All these problems are a great theme in literature about Upper Silesia, which is trying to describe and understand inconstancy and tragedy of the borderland.

In postmodern outlook, the boundary between the different divisions made inside the mind is blurred. It is the Other of one’s self that indirectly defines the identity of a character or makes it abject. The purpose of this study is to recognize the adjustment identity of Blanche in “The Streetcar Named Desire” in diverse social contexts. The identity of Blanche is under surveillance through some key elements in the postmodern bedrock. The chains of signifiers that are produced by the considered character distinguish the mayhem of the mind that is trying to find a new identity in the altered social context. The study aims to unravel the desire for the Other or the hidden alter that is trying to adapt itself to the new environment while the character is unraveled as abject for the others in the special context. The dangling state of Blanche’s mind is exposed through multiple features of the concepts to embody the blurring border between the Other and the self.

The ethics of Emmanuel Lévinas – the idea of asymmetrical, unconditional responsibility for and devotion to the Other – is founded on the dichotomy between the Same (I) and the Other. The objective of the article is to demonstrate that, in spite of this dichotomous foundation, Lévinas’s argument paradoxically eludes the binary logic of the Western logos. Employing the ‘close reading’ method with Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence, the author shows how Lévinas’s way of thinking and the main concepts of his argument situate themselves beyond binary oppositions – in the realm of the excluded middle or, otherwise, in the realm of the Third, construed as transgression of dichotomies. The main argument is preceded by a discussion of the antinomies introduced into the I-Other relation by the appearance of the Third construed as the Third Party (le tiers).

The author attempts to depict made the models of thinking about Different (student). Treating the student as a starfish in the holistic sense she analyzes the perceptions of Different at school by the teaching staff. The author digresses if the student is necessary for the teacher, in what aspect can the student be called a donor or a teacher’s enemy. Different develops us, encourages our creativity, or led us to intellectual and spiritual regression. Finally, the text resolves whether Different builds or destroys teacher’s identity.

W jakim aspekcie można go nazwać darczyńcą, a w jakim wrogiem nauczyciela?

The presented paper is based on extensive multivariate studies conducted in some academic centres of Poland which differ in location (the centre - the borderland) and socio-economic potential. What prevails in the theoretical sphere are references to studies in the area of social psychology of development and to the idea of constructivism. The research results provide a lot of information on teacher education. On the basis of the conducted diagnoses, four dimensions of learning are indicated by the author (identity of the professional role, experiences in relations with the Other, practice, social participation) as well as the process of cogeneration. This constitutes a thought provoking material, which encourages changes in contents and methods (in the current model) of training teachers. Such an approach to teacher education seems appropriate and needed, in compliance with the critical-creative view on educational reality and striving for positive solutions to social (thus also educational) problems. The study enriches knowledge in the field of pedeutology, intercultural education, and some other areas of pedagogy (as a scientific discipline) and education (as a space of social life).

The article employs the category of coloniality, a notion developed by Latin American researchers, which proved useful in the analysis of the phenomenon of racism encountered on European football stadiums. I have demonstrated that coloniality, which may be construed as a singular colonial wound or an awareness of colonialism, despite the formal abolishment of the latter, has survived until today and manifests itself in our everyday life. In the colonial era,Europefashioned itself into a centre of the world, assigning the indigenous peoples a place in the hierarchy of races. This gave rise to the modern racism and its ideologies. However, instead of theoretical deliberations concerning racism, the text offers an analysis of specific manifestations of that phenomenon. The analysis of examples of racist behaviours which are in evidence on European football stadiums (chiefly in Spain), demonstrated that unlike some of the European fans, whose notional processes are still subject to colonial paradigms, many black footballers had critically reconsidered history and, by way of cultural resistance, are capable of transcending the traditional and stigmatizing syndrome of victim, which they had been assigned by the European/colonial thinking. Thus, in a symbolic sense, they overthrow the still constricting corset of the metropolis.

As a literary work, Jean Paul Sartre’s theatrical arts gathered together in a Polishpublication namedDramaspropagates and illustrates in detail the real philosophicalmasterpiece which isBeing and Nothingness. Inspired by the author’s philosophicaldoctrine, dramas were made to show the existential thought. In that way Sartre-philosopher inBeing and Nothingnessreveals his thought in a explicative way. On theother hand, Sartre-playwright by writing dramas creates unrestricted realities whichcan be in various ways projected into the readers’ imagination, and there his generaltheses find detailed application. Philosopher wanted to show the philosophical truththrough literature, and he was very consistent about it.Being and NothingnessandDramascould be treated as sources of knowledge about his philosophy, just like hisnovels or works about his literature. Sartre uses his philosophical program to realizehis ideas for prose. It appears that philosopher did not divide the notion between“philosophical literature” and “literary philosophy”.Sartre is the creator of the theater of situations because characters from hisdramas find themselves in concrete situations and they have to make specific decisions. The dramas of the philosopher have a moralistic tone because we see inthem Sartre’s concept which says that humans may reject the role which societygave him. Man can choose the authentic existence. Philosopher’s mission was toinfluence the readers of his works. He desired to convey to people the truth abouthuman freedom. In conclusion, Sartre’s dramas are a kind of theatrical phenomenon, because as a philosopher he interested the spectator as much as an playwright.

This paper discusses creation of the image of the Other from the standpoint of globalization. The objective is to prove the thesis that due to its particular nature, global reality does not tolerate the dichotomy of us vs. them. Also, it is not invalidated by the awareness that one’s own and the alien are more con-tiguous and permeate one another to a greater extent than ever before. The only elements which do change are the contexts surrounding that distinction and the tools of its production and dissemination. Within the consciousness, in the social notions and structures of knowledge, the post-colonial era remains profoundly colonial.

This article presents an ambiguous approach of two main representatives of dialogi-cal philosophy, Emmanuel Levinas and Martin Buber, towards Husserl’s phenomenolo-gy. It is demonstrated that Levinas is not an anti-phenomenological postmodernist. Although he does not implement all the Husserlian methodology, he imitates Husserl’s philosophical rigor in exploring forgotten horizons. Buber’s theory of knowledge is analyzed from Levinas’ perspective. The closing part is devoted to a still unexplored area of Buber’s ecophenomenology. It is demonstrated that by indicating on complete relationship with nature, and showing gaps in classical phenomenology Buber makes a unique contribution to the phenomenological heritage.

The article constitutes an attempt at analysing the role of the image of a real and a symbolic father in Aleksander Wat’s work. The point of the departure is a reflection upon the issue of avant-garde gesture of breaking off with the past and identity through a change of a family name from Chwat to Wat. The problem of misunderstanding resulting from the use of different languages forms the basis of the relationship between Wat and his father and serves as the background for the proposed interpretation, whose figure becomes the Tower of Babel. The image which emerges from the analyses of the poems composed by the author of Buchalteria, and especially from the fragments of his journal, is one of the “voice of the Father,” tormenting the writer, which has a close connection with the return of the suppressed Jewish identity.

The following review discusses the recent book by Marie Mulvey-Roberts, Dangerous Bodies: Historicising the Gothic Corporeal (Manchester UP, 2016), which offers a historical perspective on gothic literary and cultural texts. In the book, Mulvey-Roberts examines how gothic fiction represents the bodies of the Other – the Catholic, the slave, the woman, the Jew, and so on – on which the history cannibalistically feeds itself; a meticulous historical research allows her to shed new light on both canonical as well as more marginal gothic texts. This review offers an overview and a brief comment on this significant addition to gothic studies.

The aim of this article is to demonstrate the differences in the perception of immigrants and refugees in social debate taking place online. For that purpose, the authors analysed comments posted in social media (Facebook). When describing the techniques of categorization, attention was paid to the interlacing colloquial and scientific descriptions in the discourse concerned with contemporary migrations, also focusing on the process of neosemantization to which scientific terms are subjected.
