Introduction: Poland is a country which is characterized by the process of population aging resulting in a dynamic growth of the old-age dependency ratio. Thus, along with the aging process, we can expect, both at the individual and at the societal level, the intensification of the problems related to coping with worsening health and social dependency of the growing number of the elderly. One of the most necessary action contributing to the prevention of the above-mentioned threats is the development of health literacy. Study aim: The aim of the study is to describe and analyze, in the context of the process of aging, the status, the structure and the role of health literacy among the elderly in Poland. Material and methods: The analyzed data come from the Polish part of the European Health Literacy population- based, cross-sectional survey (HLS-EU). Field work was carried out by the TNS OBOP Research Institute in July 2011. Data were collected in Polish by a standardized questionnaire, using a Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI). Results and conclusions: Almost every second person in the Polish adult population aged 15+ (44,6%) had low health literacy(inadequate + problematic). First of all the oldest people aged 65+ were at risk of low health literacy. 61,3% of Poles aged 65+ had low levels of general health literacy and only 12% of excellent, in contrast to people aged 50 years and below where these percentages were 39.9% and 21.5% respectively. In the context of this unsatisfactory level of health literacy, particularly in the elderly and the intensifying process of aging in the Polish population, health literacy development should occupy a very high position on the political agenda.

In Europe, the population of people over 60 years old has increased dramatically in the last few decades. Due to the demographic changes, in Poland, the world of marketing seems to discover the purchasing power of the elderly. Seniors become not only the receivers but also the senders of advertising messages. In order to sell a product, ad makers present people who are supposed to be liked, trusted, identified with and finally followed. In a press advertisement, to which an average consumer devotes 1.5 seconds, the picture is of top priority. The present research aims at analyzing the image of elderly women in press advertisements on the basis of their physical appearance, the context of the depicted situation, their clothes, facial expressions, eye-contact, and other visible traits. The survey study was conducted among young people to see the difference in their perception of elderly women in the pictures illustrating press advertisements for different products. The research results show how the positive image of the elderly in advertising can be created.

The author formulates the topic in a synthetical way, elaborating on it in three parts: Hebrew Bible, deuterocanonical books and message of the New Testament. The fake dilemma (gerontocracy or gerontophobia) is overcome in the light of Revelation: Bible presents the wisdom as a source of truth and goodness, and as a solidarity with the elderly, because only the truth can set people free (J 8, 23). The truth revealed in Christ can also overcome the modern forms of discrimination in the world.

Domestic violence against elderly family members is one of the many problems faced by the social aid system in Poland. It seems to have increased in recent years, which may be due to greater social awareness of the problem and the functioning of institutions providing aid in such cases, or to the growing courage of victims. It is reasonable to assume that the problem will only increase, as the society ages and the numbers of elderly increase and as the elderly themselves become more aware of their rights. The legal system has to be ready for this. The aim of the article is to explain why domestic violence against the elderly is a modern challenge for the social aid system. The problem will be presented in relation to research done in social aid institutions in Podlasie, presenting the scale of the problem of violence against the elderly, the characteristics of the victims and suggestions for improvements to existing regulations.

Introduction: Polish society is ageing, which means that the population of the elderly represents, and will continue to represent, an increasing proportion of the population. This situation implies a number of consequences and problems that need to be solved. This paper discusses one of the important issues related to an ageing Polish society, which is social work with elderly women and men. Method: The article is based on qualitative research (structured in-depth interview) conducted in 2011 among employees of social welfare centers (social workers and psychologists) in Podlaskie Voivodship. The study covered all the social welfare centers in the voivodship. As many as 145 interviews were conducted – 133 with social workers and 12 with psychologists. Results and conclusions: This paper discusses the similarities and differences in working with elderly women and men, illustrated with the statements of social welfare employees. Respondents indicated that working with seniors is more difficult than with young people as it requires more time and patience. However, there are also many advantages of this kind of contact, such as seniors’ gratitude and their cultured approach to social workers. Seniors’ gender also matters. Men are less likely to report to the centers, but if they decide to take such a step, they work harder than women and do not withdraw from the activity. In the summary of the paper, there are directions for future activities in the field of social work with the elderly.

Introduction: The elderly with the variety and prevalence of their diseases are the challenge for healthcare system. Additional medical problems resulting from falls are unnecessary health risks which can be avoided with appropriate treatment. Aim: The aim of the study is to define recommendations to prevent falls among people who have fallen or who are particularly vulnerable to falling. Discussion: The causes of falls in older people vary and are often complex, but their identification allows for appropriate prevention. The knowledge and implementation of certain rules by senior person and their family is essential because simple changes e.g. making certain safety arrangements in the house can sometimes contribute to well-being. Additionally, regular checkups and proper pharmacological and rehabilitation treatment are necessary to minimize the causes of falls. Adequate physical activity and the use of mobility aids can help improve the ability to move and reduce the chances of falling. Summary: Avoiding falls is crucial element of caring for the elderly. Properly coordinated care of the elderly can help avoid falls and their life-threatening consequences. This care should include co-inhabitants, as well as a range of medical professionals who have custody of an older patient which is essential to use the variety of preventive behaviour.

The world is facing a series of changes that will modify the way we envisage transport planning in our cities. Demographic ageing as a consequence of higher life expectancy and lower fertility rates is a world-wide phenomenon. While ageing is indeed a triumph of scientific progress and increasing longevity is perceived as one of humanity’s greatest achievements, the transition in society needs to be managed. In the urban context, any increase in age, health, and economic conditions determines one’s ability to enjoy the urban milieu and the so-called economies of urbanisation (advantages gained from an urban location, e.g., proximity to a market, labour supply, good communications, and financial and commercial services) longer. As there are more and more elderly people in cities, urban mobility becomes crucial in making the urban environment more inclusive. In order to provide suitable policy guidelines, it is, therefore, necessary to investigate and understand senior traveller behaviour.   In this study, we investigate urban travel characteristics of people aged 65 years and over living in the city of Genoa (one of the cities with the largest population of the elderly in the EU). By utilising a structured questionnaire, the paper explores the satisfaction and motivations of approx. 600 elderly public transport users in the city. In particular, exploratory factor analysis has been used to determine the key dimensions of the satisfaction and mobility motivations, and subsequently to use them to investigate the cost sensitivity of elderly people.

The main aim of the paper was to analyse the subjective well-being of the elderly in Poland, as well as its determinants by use of the logistic regression. The data used come from the 2011 wave of the survey “Social Diagnosis – living conditions and quality of life of Poles”. The analyses have shown that men aged 60 years or more had higher subjective well-being than their female counterparts. Subjective life satisfaction of the elderly in Poland decreases with age for women, but for males on the opposite. The elderly in Poland were satisfied the most with the aspects related to their personal life such as children, marriage, relationship with family member and relatives, while they were the least satisfied with situation in the country, life prospects, health status, sexual life, and economical situation of their families. Educational level and health status (measured in terms of disability) had the greatest impact on the sense of happiness. Generally people with the highest level of education had more chances to be happy than those less educated. The probability of happiness among people without disability was higher than among disabled ones. Married people also had bigger odds to be happy.

As the population is growing older, sociologists and economists are becoming more interested in analyzing this phenomenon. There are two paradigms for interpreting old age. The first one points to excluding old people from social and economic life. It is argued that there should be a balance between activities and possibilities of old people. The other paradigm points to the social, political and economic activities of old people until the end of their lives. It emphasizes their life experience and competencies. The article presents new processes and socio-cultural phenomena that refer to seniors. Some of them are negative like ageism, social isolation, deprivation, the uncertainty of fate and existence. Others are positive and described as “the cult of age” like the dynamic expansion of the grey people industry, development of health care and consumer projects for the elderly. The article argues that the sense and dignity of life of the elderly should be defended, as it is the main motivation and reason for living.

The demographic changes taking place in the most developed countries in Europe show a dynamic process of aging societies. Seniors (i.e. according to WHO, people over 65 years of age) are sometimes affected due to the limiting conditions of constantly progressing social changes. One of the most significant transformations is the presence of media in the everyday life of individuals. Development of technology and media communication lead to the spread of the mediatization of social reality. Many media recipients build their idea of the world based on what they learn from the mass media. It then influences their understanding of themselves and their role in the world. The purpose of this article is to analyse mediatization as a social process and to explain how it affects older people's experience of the media.

The presented article takes up the subject of conflict and violence involving elderly residents of social care homes for chronically ill. Firstly, it discusses the legal regulations appropriate to these situations, to further evaluate these regulations and recommend improvements, based on qualitative research conducted in three social care homes in Podlasie. Particular attention was payed to changes in legal regulations regarding placing residents in care homes, legally expanding the staff’s rights with regard to preventing aggression, filling staff vacancies in care homes, investments in improving staff qualifications, improving communication and information regarding payments for care services, improving the image of the institutions and mutual respect, and thought-through distribution of residents within the facility.

The article shows the problem of the rights of older people being violated, from a criminological, victimological, and normative perspective. The work includes international and national regulations of various branches of law. Above all, however, the focus is on criminal law regulations. Criminological research in Poland and worldwide related to the victimisation of older people was compared with the provisions of criminal law. Such a project was carried out to answer the question of whether current criminal law is an appropriate and adequate response to physical, psychological, sexual, and economic violence against the elderly, or whether it neglects and abandons them. The diagnosis of Polish legislative solutions determined by the authors does not lead to an optimistic thesis that the rights of these people are fully protected by criminal law. The particular vulnerability of older people to victimisation has not been sufficiently addressed by the legislature.

Publikacja ukazuje problem naruszania praw osób starszych z perspektywy kryminologicznej, wiktymologicznej i normatywnej. W pracy uwzględniono międzynarodowe i krajowe regulacje różnych gałęzi prawa.
