A book review of Ewa Mazierska’s European Cinema and Intertextuality: History, Memory and Politics (2011). The author of the book takes on the task of presenting important events of the twentieth-century history of Europe, and narratives dealing with those events, through the prism of films of various genres and made by film-makers from a number of countries. In six chapters dealing with amongst others the Holocaust, European terrorism and the fall of communism the author analyses films, and their intertextual, medium and historiographical context. The reviewer draws attention to the methodological awareness of the author, and the efficiency with which she harnesses and uses extensive historical literature on the subject. At the same time she expresses some doubts about the analyses of specific films outside of their local, and therefore more nuanced, context. However regardless of the controversial analyses Mazierska’s book confirms the importance of film as a historical source, and an impulse for meta-historical reflection.

This article presents the history of military and political changes in which Poland took part from the beginning of the second half of the 20th century to 1999. In particular, it focuses on issues related to the organization and functioning of the Warsaw Pact and the role of Poland in this military alliance. The article also describes the economic and political crisis that led to the collapse of the socialist camp, the new direction of the national security policy Poland chose after 1989 and the country's road to NATO membership.

Niniejszy artykuł ukazuje historię przemian militarno-politycznych, w jakich wzięła udział Polska od początku drugiej połowy XX w. do 1999 r., w sposób szczególny uwzględniając zagadnienia dotyczące organizacji i funkcjonowania Układu Warszawskiego oraz roli Polski w tym sojuszu wojskowym. W dalszej części artykułu zaprezentowano kryzys gospodarczo-polityczny, który doprowadził do rozpadu obozu socjalistycznego oraz nowy kierunek polityki bezpieczeństwa, jaki obrała Polska po 1989 r. wraz z jej drogą do NATO.
