The study discusses the administration of the library in the Benedictine monastery in Broumov during the 17th and 18th century. It deals with the so far not very broadly reflected normative delimitation of this area within the order and with its practical implementation and control. The Břevnov-Broumov Abbot is identified as the main person having influence on the library administration (and on the shape of the library). A substantial aspect of the Abbot’s supervision over the monastery library was its expansion that was done through an extensive network of buyers, agents and booksellers who covered all important “book” centers in the Central Europe (Prague, Vienna, Dresden, Leipzig, etc.). In addition to that, the study also outlines the system of various book collections within the monastery, the functioning of which still has to be researched.

The aim of the article is to present the notarial deeds as potential sources and to show how they can be used for studying the private book collections of the clergy and the history of the book in the partition period. The collections under investigation are well-preserved ones; they are held in state archives. Research on the extensive fonds of the Lublin notaries of 1810-1863, conducted in the State Archive in Lublin, revealed that property inventories, auction records and wills are the documents particularly valuable for studying the book collections of the clergy. The property inventories (especially the ones to 1876) frequently included the lists of the private libraries of various priests. And thanks to a detailed description of the private libraries, it is possible to learn about the book culture of the above-mentioned circles and, indirectly, about the intellectual sources of inspiration to these priests. The auction records are also valuable sources as they provide information about samizdat books circulating locally as well as showing the mechanisms of censorship in practice. In addition, the wills include useful personalized data reflecting the values of contemporary society and the history of the book collection. Using the archival sources mentioned above will broaden the knowledge about the book collections of the clergy and the book culture not only at the regional scale but also with reference to the whole Kingdom of Poland.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie potencjału źródłowego akt notarialnych i wskazanie możliwości ich wykorzystania dla badań nad księgozbiorami prywatnymi duchowieństwa i historią książki doby zaborów. Są to zasoby dobrze zachowane, przechowywane w archiwach państwowych. Jak dowiodła kwerenda prowadzona w Archiwum Państwowym w Lublinie obejmująca obszerny zespół Notariusze miasta Lublina z lat 1810-1863 wśród dokumentów sporządzanych przez notariuszy szczególnie istotne dla badań księgozbiorów duchowieństwa są inwentarze mienia, następnie akta licytacji i testamenty. Inwentarze mienia (szczególnie do 1876 r.) niejednokrotnie zawierają wykazy domowych księgozbiorów kapłanów. Z uwagi na zazwyczaj szczegółowy sposób opisu zawartości prywatnych bibliotek możliwe jest poznanie kultury książki wspomnianego środowiska, a pośrednio źródeł intelektualnych inspiracji duchowieństwa. Wartościowe źródła stanowią także akta licytacji dostarczające informacji o wtórym obiegu książki w skali lokalnej, jak i ukazujące mechanizmy działania cenzury w praktyce. Także cennych zindywidualizowanych informacji dostarczają testamenty mówiące o świecie wartości ówczesnego społeczeństwa i dalszych losach księgozbiorów. Konsekwentne wykorzystanie wspomnianych źródeł archiwalnych pozwoli poszerzyć stan wiedzy o księgozbiorach duchowieństwa i kulturze książki nie tylko w skali regionalnej, ale i w odniesieniu do całego Królestwa Polskiego.
