The aim of the paper is to deal with the interpretation of the iconography in Polish textbooks. It discusses the methods used by the authors of selected textbooks to facilitate understanding the iconography. The methods are as following: Comparing the iconographic works with the corresponding literary works, or with the art essays which explain the meaning of the works of art or the groups of works; Comparing two works of art on the same theme but from different periods; Providing keys to the step-by-step interpretation of a particular work of art or a group of works. In the conclusion the author proposes his own interpretive key consisting of the following steps: the author and the title of the work of art; the subject; what the work depicts; how the work’s composition corresponds to its message; how the emotions are expressed.
