Having a job is an important step in shaping the paths of life of young people, because it determines the possibility of implementing other roles of a mature man (running own household and family). They are derived from individual decisions and the level of socio-economic development of the country. The objective of the article is a reflection, in addition to a theoretical introduction to the problems of research on attaining adulthood, analysis of the situation on the labour market of two age categories (20–24 and 25–29) of young Poles in comparison with the EU total and selected European countries. The analysis carried out using Eurostat data verify the thesis that attainment of adulthood and opportunities for empowerment through economic activity is improving for young Poles in recent years, but they are not satisfactory compared to European peers in average and in some countries.

Podjęcie pracy zawodowej jest ważnym etapem kształtowania ścieżek życia ludzi młodych, bo warunkuje możliwość realizacji pozostałych ról dojrzałego człowieka (prowadzącego własne gospodarstwo domowe i założyciela rodziny). Są one pochodną indywidualnych decyzji i poziomu rozwoju społeczno-ekonomicznego kraju. Celem podjętej w artykule refleksji jest, obok teoretycznego wprowadzenia w problematykę badań nad osiąganiem dorosłości, analiza sytuacji na rynku pracy młodych Polaków należących dwóch kategorii wiekowych (20–24 lata i 25–29 lat) na tle UE ogółem i wybranych krajów europejskich. Przeprowadzone analizy z wykorzystaniem danych Eurostatu weryfikują tezę, że wchodzenie w dorosłość i możliwości usamodzielniania się poprzez aktywność zawodową poprawiają się dla młodych Polaków w ostatnich latach, ale są niesatysfakcjonujące w porównaniu z wieloma ich europejskimi rówieśnikami w wielu krajach.
