George Orwell, the author of famous anti-totalitarian novel “1984” and other novels and essays, can be designated as the predecessor of modern British journalistic media criticism, taking into consideration his analysis of different aspects the of practical functioning of the mass press in Great Britain and France. The most significant Orwell’s writing on the press practice is “Weeklies for boys” (1939), the essay with the leftist critique of dominant system of values and style of such kind of popular papers with its conservative values and escapist trends. The author argued that weeklies for British pupils are the instrument for the promotion of the loyalty to social status quo in the United Kingdom.
