On 24th and 25th of May, 2018, the Institute of Polish Studies and Journalism of the University of Rzeszów hosted the scientific conference Life without Love is (not) possible. The conference was organized by the employees of the Department of Methodology of Teaching Literature and Polish Language. Over forty participants from the most important academic centres from all over Poland took part in it. The speakers addressed not only general topics concerning basic types of love (agape, charis, eros, family), but also referred to more detailed, but extremely important issues, such as: aspects, features of this value depicted in literary texts, magazines or aphorisms; ways of talking about love in the statements of young people and school textbooks.

The book of nature expressed both the possibility of knowing/reading of nature and the relationship between the experimental science and other books, mainly the book of Revelation. However, the role and significance of the metaphor changed with the development of natural science, and now the book of nature seems to obscure other books, and, moreover, its reading became the model of reading in general. Actually this metaphor is not a living metaphor any more, as it does not create, but closes and eclipses. Hence the need to look for a new one. This story is told here on the basis of Teodor Parnicki’s prose, who was a very careful observer and connoisseur of history of ideas, and of history as a mode of literature.

The writer Grégoire Bouillier publishes a remarkable book entitled Le Dossier M (two volumes, 2017 and 2018), increased by extentions on a website. This disproportionate literary enterprise offers a real reading experience that extends by pushing over the limits of the object-book. The book offers the story of the impossibility of loving and telling. The author have the ambition of saying everything. Thus, the autobiographical narrative reenvited in this monumental format provides access to the meaning through a quest for self that the reader can share.

Poddano analizie zawartość perswazyjną 24 mów amerykańskich polityków i 26 mów polskich polityków. Zastosowano metody ilościowe i jakościowe do wykazania specyfiki perswazyjnej w różnych kulturach politycznych. Ustalono zestaw powtarzających się taktyk perswazyjnych z podziałem na etos, logos, patos. Określono częstotliwość ich występowania w obydwu zestawach tekstów.

This study presents a comparison of the methods of communication with voters employed by Polish and American politicians. The research was conducted on the closing statements made by political leaders during election debates. The corpus included debates from the United States for the years 1996–2016, and from Poland for 1995–2015. The closing speech is a part of the debate where instead of interacting with each other, the candidates address themselves directly to the audience. It is the crowning moment of the debate and represents an appeal to the voters for support in the election. The analysis features 24 American and 26 Polish speeches. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were employed to illustrate the features of persuasion across two different political cultures. A list of repeated persuasive strategies was established, and divided into the categories of logos, pathos and ethos. The frequency of their use in both halves of the corpus material was then calculated.
