Nature’s resources having a usability attribute are nature values – if they are able to provide for human demands that are being exploited. This article relates to the environmental potential of mining and post – mining areas as well as possibilities of its use in the development of tourisms and recreation. An original typology of the nature value and the assessment of the tourist usability of environment of chosen mining towns of the Rybnik Coal Area – Wodzisław Śląski, Radlin, Rydułtowy, and Pszów are presented in this work. The Rybnik Coal Area is situated in the southern Poland, in a south-west part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. A geological substratum consists of Carboniferous rocks with a hard coal layer exploited from the end of 18th century, but more intensively in the last half-century. In all of the researched towns, hard coal mining is still running and anthropogenic processes changing the environment are taking place. An inventory of natural resources was performed during the direct field work in the years 2010-2011. The nature values were catalogued in a typological way according to the elements of the environment from which they result, focusing on the mining character of the research areas. Therefore, geologic, geomorphologic, hydrologic and biotic (of flora and fauna) have been highlighted, while climatic values have been omitted intentionally due to the vast issue of the assessment of the bioclimatic zone potential. Additionally, natural and anthropogenic elements were distinguished in each group of the values. Due to a significant degree of anthropogenic transformations of the environment, the analysed area is characterised by low environmental attractiveness; tourism and recreation play a marginal role there. Among the nature values of the analysed towns, the geologic qualities are the most significant ones. Therefore, geotourism is the form of tourist activity suggested to revive the region. The greatest potential for the development of geotourism is shown by Pszów, Radlin, Rydułtowy. The development and popularisation of geoturism should be included in the planning documents of the towns mentioned above. In order to increase tourist movement, it is suggested to mark up so-called academic-didactic paths and to mark geotourist object with appropriate information signs and more importantly with the development of infrastructure serving tourism and recreation.
The purpose of the article is to determine whether potential tourists consider information about a city’s air quality in their assessment of its tourist attractiveness and how this this information affects their travel decisions. Urban tourism is a common and dynamically developing form of tourism. Cities encourage tourists to visit them with various attractions, cultural, gastronomic and accommodation offerings as well as mass events. At the same time, they are often industrial centres and important transportation hubs, which makes them characterized by a high degree of air pollution. The article presents results of a survey involving 509 respondents from Poland. The data were used to assessment to what extent information about air quality in a given city is relevant for people planning a tourist trip. In addition, the survey provided information about factors that could increase the respondents’ interest in the level of air quality in a city they were planning to visit. Particular attention was paid to the respondents’ health. Many diseases can be the result of air pollution, or can be aggravated by substances contained in smog. Therefore, the authors tried to determine whether people suffering from such illnesses were more likely to pay special attention to air quality in their prospective destinations. The results constitute a significant contribution to the knowledge about the factors affecting demand in urban tourism. They may be relevant for entities responsible for managing cities and promoting tourism products. The article also draws attention to the fact that problems arising from air pollution in cities can affect not only their residents, but also tourists.
The article presents various aspects of the tourist offer and the size of demand in the Romanian Carpathians. Although the infrastructure and entertainment opportunities there are not as developed as the country’s Black Sea or balneal spa regions, the mountains do offer a variety of colourful ways to spend time, including walking, resting, winter sports, treatment and rehabilitation, trails, alpine activities, and speleological tourism, sometimes accompanied by a rich history. The potential for tourism afforded by the region’s nature is presented at the beginning of the article, followed by the anthropogenic features of the area. The second part discusses the infrastructure, including the currently existing equipment in the mountains. The trails and ski lifts that enjoy such great interest are described, and the situation in alpine tourism is discussed in the light of comparative data including the actual number of people lodging (both Romanians and foreigners), the number of lodgings, the length of visit, and so forth. In the last year of the research, 2006, the region saw clear growth in earnings from tourism. We can hope that, given the country’s current political situation, which is improving the country’s image, the growing care for the level of service quality, and the promotion of Romania as an international tourist destination, the growth will continue in the future.
Set in the southern part of Cracow and Częstochowa Jura, the Prądnik Valley has for many years been a very popular tourist destination. In 1956, the middle part of the Prądnik Valley was earmarked to become the Ojców National Park. At present it is estimated that about 400,000 people visit the Park every year. The main tourist attraction of this area is the landscape with its many natural and cultural assets. The article includes the results of questionnaire research conducted in the summer season of 2008. The questionnaire asked tourists and visitors to assess the Prądnik Valley landscape and indicate its most interesting elements. They were supposed to choose one item from the list of the most important attractions, both natural and cultural. The interpretation of the results shows that the majority of respondents consider the Prądnik Valley landscape to be “attractive” (53%) or even “very attractive” (38%). The visitors indicated that the most interesting element of the landscape was the topography with its rock forms (68%), nature (14%), and architectural monuments (12%). According to 39% of respondents, the impressive rock formation called the Club of Hercules (Maczuga Herkulesa) in Pieskowa Skała is the symbol of the Ojców National Park. Another interesting finding is that cultural elements – especially the castles in Pieskowa Skała and Ojców – are also often associated with the Park. This shows that the great value of the Ojców National Park resides in its harmonious combination of natural and cultural assets. This rich heritage should undoubtedly be protected while also being made accessible to visitors in a responsible way.
Tourism in the eastern, border areas of Poland is based primarily on natural values, which are supplemented by regional cultural heritage. For this reason, Chełm County stands a fair chance of making tourism one of the pillars of its development, especially in rural areas. The purpose of the article was to evaluate tourist attractiveness of the communes and one municipality of Chełm County using the method of synthetic measure and attempt to identify real and potential directions for tourism development with particular emphasis on cross-border tourism. The results of the evaluation of tourist attractiveness indicated that the creation of comprehensive packages of products based mostly on the values of the local environment can be an opportunity for increased tourism in the communes in Chełm County. However, insufficient tourist development, poor transport accessibility and low recognition of the area as a tourist destination can be limiting factors in the development of tourism in this county, so it is necessary to take measures connected with the development of infrastructure and promotion of the region.

Hiking, downhill skiing and snowboarding are among the most popular forms of active tourism in mountainous areas. Their popularity and their mass scale do not only result from the presence of the appropriate landscape, but also from its appropriate development. The objective of the article is to attempt to assess the attractiveness of selected Central European countries in terms of winter sports and mountain hiking, to consider the opinions of students who live in Visegrad Group countries, as well as to evaluate the barriers to development of their competitive offers. According to respondents, the most attractive countries for winter sports are Austria and Slovakia, and the least attractive are Hungary, Romania and Lithuania. In turn, according to the students, the best conditions for mountain hiking are in Slovakia, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland. In addition, respondents from particular countries assessed domestic offers highly.
The Karkonosze Mountains (Giant Mts.) are a famous tourist region in the Sudety Mountains. One reason for this popularity is the geovalues connected with geotourism – which is a new form of tourism. The aim of this study is to assess the tourist attractiveness of 52 geosites in the Karkonosze Geopark. The assessment was done by using criteria of four other methods. The geosites of the Karkonosze Mountains are divided into four groups: most attractive, attractive, averagely attractive and not very attractive. Through this grouping a typology classification of the geosites was created. The results should lead to better management of geotourism in the Karkonosze Mountains.
The aim of the article is to assess the role of degraded landscapes in tourism. The authors try to answer questions about the contexts in which such landscapes may be found in relation to those complex phenomena concerning the human need for travel, leisure, cognition and experience. They also pose questions about the physical and symbolic limits to tourism and recreation in degraded landscapes. The work is based on a literature review and observations on chosen degraded landscapes (mostly industrial and post-industrial) located at the Czech foreground of the Ore Mountains (Czech Krušné Hory, German Erzgebirge).
The purpose of this article is to determine the influence of various methods of selection of diagnostic features on the sensitivity of classification. Three options of feature selection are presented: a parametric feature selection method with a sum (option I), a median of the correlation coefficients matrix column elements (option II) and the method of a reversed matrix (option III). Efficiency of the groupings was verified by the indicators of homogeneity, heterogeneity and the correctness of grouping. In the assessment of group efficiency the approach with the Weber median was used. The undertaken problem was illustrated with a research into the tourist attractiveness of voivodships in Poland in 2011.

The article emphasizes the opportunities which are brought by a relatively new trend of providing the new functions to the post-industrial urban areas. These sites do not have to be a burden for the city, but they may become the ‘new tourist places’ and attractions drawing the attention of inhabitants and tourists. This is how a new tourist attractiveness arises from the old urban substance.
Przytoczono przykłady form turystyki i sposobów zagospodarowania przestrzeni wspomagających holistyczny kontakt turysty z krajobrazem.

The local government should take action and tourism projects to promote the introduction of new solutions and ideas related to the development of tourism that, above all, should result in an appropriate and consistent promotion of the local tourism product. Promotional activities encourage tourists to buy certain products, create a positive reputation and image of the area that offers the tourist product, and affect the competitiveness among other areas of tourism products in the country and abroad. The process of promoting the city of Szczecin is implemented at various levels and uses most of the available tools for promotion. A strong impulse for the development of tourism in Szczecin and the consequently increasing number of tourists (mostly foreign) may help widen promotional activities abroad. Opportunities for the development of tourism in Szczecin also intensify the innovative solutions. The purpose of the paper is to identify promotional activities applied by the local government and determine their importance to the tourist attractiveness of the city.
