In 2011 in Egypt and in 2014 in Ukraine, ultras became a fundamental part of the protestthat lead to the change of the government. In Germany, protest of the ultras also becamea public topic at the end of 2012. They rebel against and act called Secure Stadium Experience. We are looking for the reason of their protest. As football is highly related to identity,we stress the theoretical concepts of a struggle for recognition. We would like to show howthey express their protest and how prominent the reasons for their struggle are. Thereforewe analyze three different spheres: official statements, actions, choreographies, and bannersthey show, and finally, how they see themselves.

Football stadiums are a space for the articulation of messages by the most committed fans – the ultras. The platform for their messages is mainly banners and flags. The content of these tifo displays relates both to issues of identity (club, national, shared values) and comment on the current social situation. The aim of this article is to analyse and systematise the entirety of messages formulated by Lech Poznań ultras by way of an analysis of the content of the banners documented in photographs from 177 matches of Lech Poznań. The text focuses on the content of all the banners, flags and sectorials presented in the “Kocioł” (Lech Poznań’s ultras sector) during Ekstraklasa football matches in 2017–2021. The research material is used to identify the main thematic areas of fans’ communication activity and to categorise the content they create.
